ESPN COVERAGE OF NBA DRAFT 2008 Once again, the NBA Draft will be televised live by ESPN from The WaMu Theatre at Madison Square Garden. ESPN’s coverage begins at 6:00 p.m. CT with a Pre-Draft Show. Live Draft coverage will begin at 6:30 p.m. CT with the Chicago Bulls on the clock with the first selection. Chicago also owns the 39th pick in the second round. NBA DRAFT PROCEDURE NBA Draft 2008 consists of 60 selections divided evenly into two rounds. The Draft will begin at 6:30 p.m. CT with opening remarks from NBA Commissioner David Stern. With the first pick, the Bulls will be on the clock at approximately 6:30 p.m. CT. The time limit is five minutes between picks in the first round and two minutes between picks in the second round. With just a 1.70% chance to land the top spot, the Bulls defied the ping-pong ball odds and vaulted to No. 1. Prior to the Lottery, Chicago was projected to select ninth in the Draft. When the numbers 11-7-9-13 popped up, Chicago made the second-largest leap in the 24-year history of the Draft Lottery. In 1993, Orlando jumped from the 11th pick to No. 1 (Chris Webber). In 1999, the Bulls went from No. 3 to No. 1, and drafted forward Elton Brand out of Duke. Brand went on to share Rookie of the Year honors with Houston’s Steve Francis. BULLS DRAFT FLASHBACK This marks the second time in franchise history that the Bulls have held the No. 1 pick and the sixth time with the No. 39 selection. Here is a look at who the Bulls selected with their previous No. 1 and No. 39 selections: Bulls history with the No. 1 pick: 1999 Elton Brand Duke Bulls history with the No. 39 pick: 1968 Mike Lynn UCLA 1973 Martin Terry* Arkansas 1992 Litterial Green** Georgia

*from New York DRAFT NIGHT DEALS In three of his five drafts thus far (2003, 2004 & 2006), Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations John Paxson has pulled the trigger on a draft night trade. In 2003, Paxson’s first draft as Chicago’s GM, he chose Florida’s Matt Bonner in the second round (45th overall) before dealing him to Toronto for a future second-round choice (38th overall in NBA Draft 2004). Then in NBA Draft 2004, Paxson drafted Iowa State’s Jackson Vroman in the second round (31st overall) and immediately sent him to Phoenix for Duke product Luol Deng (7th overall by Phoenix) and a future conditional first round selection (21st overall in NBA Draft 2005: Nate Robinson). In 2006, Paxson chose Texas’ LaMarcus Aldridge second overall and used him to acquire the fourth overall pick Tyrus Thomas of LSU and Viktor Khryapa from Portland. Also in the 2006 Draft, Paxson brought Switzerland native Thabo Sefolosha (13th overall pick) to Chicago for the rights to draftee Rodney Carney (16th overall selection) of Memphis. DRAFT CARD Per the latest CBA, a domestic player must be at least 19 years of age during the calendar year in which the Draft is held, and at least one NBA season has elapsed since the player’s graduation from high school, for him to be Draft eligible. All U.S. players are automatically eligible upon the end of their college eligibility. International players must be at least 19 years of age during the calendar year of the Draft. As of June 16, 2008, there were 39 collegiate and five international prospects that were early entry candidates. Forty-eight of the 87 players who had applied for early entry status withdrew their names by the NBA’s June 16 early-entrant withdrawal deadline.

MISC. NBA DRAFT 2008 NOTES

• Ninety-one players applied for early entry in NBA Draft 2008, including 69 players from U.S. colleges and institutions and 22 international players. Those who have applied for early entry have the right to withdraw their names from consideration by notifying the NBA of their decision in writing 10 days prior to the draft. Of the 84 players who applied for early entry in 2007, 46 withdrew.

• Testing the draft waters remains a popular trend, with many high profile juniors not automatically slated for the first round declaring for the draft without hiring an agent, hoping to secure an invite to the NBA Pre-Draft Camp in Orlando. In 2007, Virginia’s Sean Singletary, Nevada’s Marcelus Kemp, Clemson’s James Mays and Texas A&M’s Joseph Jones each played in Orlando and decided to return to school for another season. Fresno State’s Dominic McGuire (47th), Florida’s Taurean Green (52nd) and Nevada’s Ramon Sessions (56th) also played, got drafted and stuck on rosters this past season.

• Of the 60 players that were drafted in 2007, 19 spent time in the D-League this past season, the third in which NBA teams were allowed to assign players. They ranged from the 21st overall pick (Daequan Cook) to the 59th pick (D.J. Strawberry). Thirty-three players from the past two drafts were assigned to D-League affiliates. In all, 31 players were assigned to D-League teams from NBA rosters during the 2007-08 season.

• There were six college seniors selected in the first round of the 2007 draft. Of the 30 players selected in the first round, 14 had at least three years of experience on the collegiate level. Seventeen went to college for at least two years.

• NBA teams continue to find quality players in the second round of the NBA Draft. Of the 30 players chosen in the second round of the 2007 draft, 19 played in the NBA this past season. Nine other players have their rights held by NBA teams. Only two players – Derrick Byars and Sammy Mejia – were cut by their respective teams in training camp. Houston’s Carl Landry (31st) and Boston’s Glen Davis (35th) each became valuable contributors on their respective playoff-bound teams.

• In the 2007 draft, the Phoenix Suns (Rudy Fernandez, 24th), San Antonio Spurs (Tiago Splitter, 28th) and Philadelphia 76ers (Petteri Koponen, 30th) spent first-round picks on international players who didn’t play in the NBA this past season (Portland traded for the rights to Fernandez and Koponen on draft night). In the 2006 draft, the Washington Wizards (Oleksiy Pecherov, 18th) and Portland Trail Blazers (Joel Freeland, 30th) did the same. In 2005, the San Antonio Spurs chose Ian Manhinmi with the 28th overall selection. This trend figures to continue this year, with several young international players hoping to get into the first round, despite perhaps being several years away from contributing in the NBA.

• This year marks the 24th Draft Lottery in NBA history. With a record of 48-34 in 2007-08, the Golden State Warriors are the winningest team in NBA history to qualify for the Draft Lottery. The previous winningest team was the 2000-2001 Houston Rockets (45-37). The Rockets finished 13th in the drawing and wound up drafting Richard Jefferson (who was later traded to New Jersey). In 1986, both the Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns sported the two best lottery team records at 32-50. The Clippers won the top pick, which was automatically sent to Philadelphia as part of trade. The Sixers then traded the pick to Cleveland, which selected Brad Daugherty No. 1 overall. The odds were again defied in 1993 as the Orlando Magic (41-41) jumped over 10 teams to claim the top pick, which they used to select Chris Webber, who was later traded to Golden State in exchange for Penny Hardaway and three future number one picks.

• Last year, the Portland Trail Blazers won the lottery and chose Ohio State’s Greg Oden with the top pick, but it was Seattle’s Kevin Durant, the second overall selection, who garnered NBA Rookie of the Year honors. The last top overall pick to win Rookie of the Year was LeBron James in 2003-04. Since 1996, only four top overall selections – Allen Iverson, Tim Duncan, Elton Brand (shared honors with Steve Francis) and James – have gone on to win Rookie of the Year.

• In the five NBA Drafts since 2003, 297 players have been drafted. Over 10 percent of those drafted players (30-of-297) played in the Final Four the year they were selected. Of those 30 players, 67 percent (20-of-30) were chosen in the lottery. This year 18 players who competed in the 2008 Men's Final Four have a chance to be selected in the 2008 NBA Draft (provided they keep their names in the draft). Of those 18 players, seven would need to go in the lottery to eclipse the previous high of six players (2007) who competed in the Final Four and then were tabbed among the top 14 picks in that year’s NBA Draft.

• As a result of a rule change in 2007, NBA teams were not permitted to conduct individual workouts with draft-eligible players prior to June 3. Workouts scheduled and sanctioned by the NBA were conducted at the NBA Pre-Draft Camp in Orlando, and open to all teams.

• Last year, four players who made the trip to the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament heard their names called on draft night: Carl Landry (Seattle, 31st – rights traded to Houston), Adam Haluska (New Orleans, 43rd), Stephane Lasme (Golden State, 46th) and Sammy Mejia (Detroit, 57th). An additional four spent time in the NBA this season – Courtney Sims (Indiana), Blake Ahearn (Miami), Brandon Wallace (Boston) and Darryl Watkins (Sacramento).

• As the draft continues to get deeper each year, more “first-round talents” get pushed into the second round. While the second round affords no guarantees, teams have taken to the idea of giving a three-year contract, at a reasonable price, to players they feel may have slipped through the cracks and have great potential. A three-year deal allows the team to secure the player’s “Bird rights,” meaning they can exceed the salary cap in order to re-sign him. In 2001, the Golden State Warriors nabbed Gilbert Arenas in the second round, but only signed him to a two-year deal, and were unable to match the offer sheet he signed with Washington in 2003.

• In the early days, the draft used to last as long as teams desired, with the proceedings ending only when every team tired of calling out names. As of 1973, the draft lasted an amazing 20 rounds (at least it did for the fledgling Buffalo Braves, who needed all the players they could get after winning only 21 games the season before). In 1974, the league adopted a 10-round NBA Draft, a format that stayed in place until 1985, when it was scaled back to seven rounds. After three years of seven-round drafts, the draft was shaved to three rounds in 1988 and to its current length of two rounds in 1989.
