OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR AARON KROMER

Quality control coaches: Brendan Nugent & Carson Walch

QUARTERBACKS (4) - Coach Matt Cavanaugh

After signing a seven-year contract in January, Jay Cutler enters sixth season in Chicago as franchise leader in career passer rating (83.1),

completions (1,258), attempts (2,090), passing yards (14,913) and passing yards per game (222.6). Cutler also ranks second in completion

percentage (60.2) and passing touchdowns (101) in 67 starts as a member of the Bears.

For his NFL career, Cutler has started all 104 games played in eight seasons with Denver (2006-08) and Chicago (2009-13), completing

2,020-of-3,310 pass attempts (61.0 percent) for 23,937 yards, 155 touchdowns and 112 interceptions for a QB rating of 84.6. Has added

1,234 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 285 career carries (4.3 ypc).

Backing up Cutler will be Jordan Palmer, Jimmy Clausen and David Fales. Palmer returns for his second season with the Bears after

spending the fi nal 9 contests of the 2013 season on Chicago’s active roster but never appearing in a game. Palmer has appeared in four

games during his NFL career, all with the Cincinnati Bengals (2008-11), completing 10-of-15 pass attempts for 59 yards with two interceptions.

Clausen was signed by the Bears in the 2014 offseason after spending four seasons (2010-13) with the Carolina Panthers. During his

time in Carolina, Clausen completed 157-of-299 passes (52.5 percentage) for 1,558 yards, three touchdowns and nine interceptions in 13

appearances (10 starts). He added 57 rushing yards on 23 carries (2.5 ypc). All 13 appearances came in his 2010 rookie season.

Fales was selected by the Bears in the sixth round (183rd overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft. Over two seasons at San Jose State, Fales

started all 25 contests connecting on 639-of-938 passing attempts (68.1 percent) for 8,382 yards, 66 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. He

owns the two top passing seasons in San Jose State history with 4,193 yards in 2012 and 4,189 in 2013, the single-season school record

for touchdown passes (33 in both 2012 and 2013) and the top two marks for completions (327 in 2012 and 312 in 2013). Prior to his time at

SJSU, Fales started 20 contests at Monterey Peninsula College (2010-11) after one year (2009) at Nevada, although he did not play a game

for the Wolfpack.

RUNNING BACKS/FULL BACKS (7) - Coach Skip Peete

Matt Forté is coming off his second Pro Bowl selection (2011 and 2013), ranking second in Bears history in yards from scrimmage (9,585)

and rushing yards (6,666 on 1,551 attempts) and fi fth in rushing touchdowns (35). The dual-threat back also ranks third in franchise history in

catches (341) and 14th in receiving yards (2,919, which are second most by a running back in Bears annals). He is one of just three players in

franchise history with 6,000 rushing yards and 2,500 receiving yards, joining Neal Anderson and Hall of Famer Walter Payton.

Forté is third in the league in yards from scrimmage, rushing yards and receiving yards among running backs since entering the NFL in

2008. One-of-three players in NFL history to have 1,400-plus yards from scrimmage in each of his fi rst six seasons (Curtis Martin and LaDai-

nian Tomlinson).

A mix of rookies and young veterans will compete for the backup running back position. The Bears selected Ka’Deem Carey in the fourth

round (117th overall) in the 2014 NFL Draft. The Pac-10 offensive player of the year in 2013, Carey started 24-of-36 games played in his three-

year career with Arizona (2011-13) rushing for 4,239 yards and 48 touchdowns on 743 carries (5.7 ypc). He added 679 receiving yards and

four touchdowns on 77 receptions (8.8 ypr) and 565 yards on 27 kickoff returns (20.9 ypr). His 48 rushing touchdowns rank second in FBS

history behind the 49 by Montee Ball of Wisconsin (2009-12).

Michael Ford is in his second season with the Bears after spending his rookie season on special teams collecting fi ve special teams

tackles on coverage. Ford was also a part of the return game for Chicago, returning fi ve pooched kickoffs for 37 yards (7.4 ypr).

plus receptions in each of the last seven seasons.

Third-year 6-3 wideout Alshon Jeffery is coming off a 2013 Pro Bowl season in which he was named the PFWA’s Most Improved Player

OFFENSIVE LINE (15) - Coach Pat Meyer

The Bears are returning all fi ve starters on an offensive line that each started all 16 games in 2013, fi nishing tied for fourth in the NFL in fewest

sacks allowed with 30.

Fourteen-year NFL veteran Roberto Garza is in his fourth season as the anchor of the Bears offensive line at center and his 10th season

overall with the team. The durable lineman has seen action in all but two of the 150 games since joining the Bears in 2005 (appearing in 142-

of-144 regular season contests and seeing action in all six playoff games). For the last three years, he has served as an offensive captain

while starting all 16 regular season games each season at center. For his NFL career, Garza has started 164-of-194 regular season games

played with Atlanta (2001-04) and Chicago (2005-13). He has played each of the interior offensive line spots during his career.

Two-time Pro Bowl (2011-12) left tackle Jermon Bushrod is in his second season with the Bears and eighth season overall. Bushrod has

started 78-of-82 games played with the New Orleans Saints (2007-12) and Bears (2013), including the offensive Saints 2009 Super Bowl

season. While a starter, his respective team has ranked in the top fi ve in the NFL for fewest sacks allowed each season. He has started all

16 games in each of the last three seasons.

Next to Bushrod on the left side of the line is veteran guard Matt Slauson. Slauson, who returns to Chicago by signing a four-year contract

this offseason, has started all 16 contests in each of the last four seasons and for his NFL career has appeared in 67 games (64 starts) with

the New York Jets (2009-12) and Bears (2013). He has helped pave way for a 1,000-yard rusher in three of his four seasons as a starter.

Jordan Mills is slated to hold down the starting right tackle position after opening all 16 games there during his 2013 rookie season. The

6-5, 316-pound Mills was a fi fth-round selection (163rd overall) in 2013.

Next to Mills on the right side of the line will be 2013 Pro Bowl guard Kyle Long. Long started all 16 games in 2013 and became the fi rst

Bears rookie to make the Pro Bowl since Johnny Knox (returner) in 2009 and the fi rst to make it as a non-specialist since Brian Urlacher in

2000.

The Bears re-signed guard/tackle Eben Britton in April, bringing back the sixth-year pro who saw action in 13 games last season with

four starts, mostly as a sixth eligible lineman. For his NFL career, Britton has started 34 of 50 games played with Jacksonville (2009-12) and

Chicago (2013). Britton started 23 games at right tackle, seven contests at left guard and four as a sixth eligible lineman.

three games at left guard, while spending the entire 2013 season on the active roster but never appearing in a game.

Chicago also resigned guard/center Taylor Boggs who spent the entire 2013 season on the Bears active roster appearing in one contest.

Prior to his time in the Windy City, Boggs spent the 2011 season and part of the 2012 offseason with the New York Jets.

During free agency, the Bears inked C Brian de la Puente after he started 44-of-48 games over four seasons in New Orleans. The 6-3,

306-pound de la Puente started all 16 games at center for the Saints in each of the last two seasons. During that time, the Saints offense

ranked second and fourth in 2012 and 2013, respectively, in total net yards.

T Joe Long enters his second season with the Bears after being signed by the team in December of 2013. Long was inactive for the fi nal

two regular season games for Chicago after spending a majority of the 2013 season on Pittsburgh’s practice squad.

During the fi rst week of training camp, the Bears signed veteran G/C Dylan Gandy. Gandy has appeared in 120 games with 19 starts over

eight seasons with Indianapolis (2005-07) and Detroit (2009-13), playing both center and guard. He has appeared in at least 15 contests

seven times during his career, including all 16 games on fi ve occasions.

The Bears also added Michael Ola this offseason. The 6-4, 312-pound Ola spent 2012-13 with the Montreal Alouettes starting 21 games

and a playoff contest.

Chicago selected T Charles Leno, Jr. in the seventh round (246th overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Boise State. Leno started 39 con-

secutive games to fi nish his collegiate career, earning fi rst-team all-Mountain West honors as a senior. Overall during his collegiate career,

Leno saw action in 49 contests, starting 13 contests at right tackle and 26 at left tackle.

On July 31st, the Bears added G Graham Pocic and T Dennis Roland to the roster. The 6-7 Pocic signed with the St. Louis Rams in 2013

as an undrafted rookie free agent out of the University of Illinois but was placed on injured reserve last year due to a shoulder injury.

Roland started 30-of-71 games played over six seasons (2008-13) with the Cincinnati Bengals. Roland started games 19 at right tackle

and 11 as a sixth-eligible lineman. He has also appeared in four postseason contests with one start at right tackle.

return touchdowns. Tillman has started 150-of-154 career games adding 944 tackles, eight fumble recoveries and three sacks in his career.

Tim Jennings signed a four-year deal in January to remain with the Bears after earning two straight Pro Bowl nods (2012 and 2013).

Over the last two seasons, Jennings is second in the NFL with 13 interceptions and tied for second in the league with three interception return

touchdowns. In eight NFL seasons with the Colts (2006-09) and Bears (2010-13), Jennings has started 79-of-115 games played, collecting

Two 2013 undrafted rookie free agents Demontre Hurst (Oklahoma) and C.J. Wilson (NC State) return for their second season with the Bears.

Hurst spent the entire 2013 season on the Bears practice squad while Wilson played in two contests as a rookie.

The Bears selected Kyle Fuller in the fi rst round (14th overall) in the 2014 NFL Draft. Fuller fi nished his collegiate career at Virginia Tech

starting 41-of-50 games, accumulating six interceptions, 34 pass break-ups, 173 tackles – including 23.5 TFLs and 4.5 sacks – four forced

fumbles and one fumble recovery. He added one blocked kick and three punt returns for 41 yards (13.7 avg) and one touchdown on special

teams.

Chicago also added Al Louis-Jean (Boston College) and Derricus Purdy (Texas Southern) as undrafted rookies in 2014.

SAFETIES (8)

The Bears signed veteran safety Ryan Mundy this offseason and he is slated to start at strong safety this season. The sixth year safety joined

Chicago after collecting 143 tackles - including one sack and fi ve TFLs – two interceptions, 10 pass break-ups, three fumble recoveries and

64 special teams tackles in 80 games with 14 starts for the Pittsburgh Steelers (2008-12) and the New York Giants (2013). Mundy is coming

off of career-highs in tackles (70), sacks (one) and TFLs (four) while starting nine-of-16 games played for the Giants in 2013. He has never

missed a regular season game in his fi ve-year career.

The competition opposite Mundy will include a mix of veterans and a rookie.

In addition to the signing of Mundy, the Bears added veteran safeties Danny McCray and M.D. Jennings this offseason. McCray has

appeared in 60 with 10 starts over four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys (2010-13), putting together 96 tackles - including one sack and two

tackles for losses - two interceptions, three pass break-ups and one forced fumble. On special teams he has 74 tackles, fi nishing in the top

two in that category for the Cowboys three times (10-12).

Jennings joins the Bears after coming off of career highs in tackles (79), sacks (one), and fumble recoveries (one) while starting all 16

games for Green Bay in 2013. For his career, Jennings has started 26-of-47 career games for the Packers (2011-13), accumulating 125

tackles, one interception - which he returned 72 yards for a touchdown - eight pass break-ups, one sack and one fumble recovery. He has

added 24 special teams tackles.

The Bears selected Brock Vereen in the fourth round (131st overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Minnesota. The 2013 fi rst team all-Big

Ten safety collected 200 tackles, four interceptions, 22 pass defl ections, two forced fumbles and 7.5 TFLs after staring 36-of-47 games (18

at corner, 11 at free safety and 7 at strong safety) in four years (2010-13) at Minnesota. He also blocked one kick on special teams.

Chris Conte (CON-tee) returns for his fourth season with the Bears, having started 40-of-45 games played, recording 230 tackles, six

interceptions, 13 pass break ups, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Last season, Conte started all 16 games, putting up career-

highs in tackles (95), interceptions (three) two interceptions, passes defensed (seven) while producing his fi rst career forced fumble.

Veteran safety Craig Steltz returns for his seventh season with the Bears having appeared in 77 games with 8 starts, notching 97 career

tackles, one interception, two pass break-ups, one sack, three forced fumbles and three tackles for losses. He has added 58 special teams

stops.

In June, the Bears added fi ve-time Pro Bowler (2006, ’08-11) Adrian Wilson. Wilson has started 162-of-181 games over 12 seasons

(2001-12) with Arizona, recording 885 tackles, 27 interceptions, 25.5 sacks, 99 pass break ups, 15 forced fumbles and eight fumble recover-

ies. He has four return touchdowns (two interceptions and two fumble returns). Wilson is one of 13 players to record 20 or more interceptions

and 20 or more sacks in their career since sacks became an offi cial statistic in 1982. His 25.5 sacks are third most among NFL safeties since

1982.

The Bears also brought in undrafted rookie free agent Marcus Trice (North Texas).

RETURNERS (5)

Both the kick and punt returner jobs are an open competition this year for Chicago with a multitude of player in the mix.

Eric Weems enters his third season with the Bears after spending fi ve seasons in Atlanta (2007-11) including a Pro Bowl year as a returner

in 2010. Weems has recorded 815 punt return yards and a touchdown on 78 punt returns (10.4 ypr) and 3,184 kickoff return yards and a touch-

down on 131 returns (24.3 ypr). He has added 66 career special teams tackles on coverage units.

The Bears signed Chris Williams off of the Saints practice squad at the end of last season. Prior to joining the Saints last season, Williams

spent two seasons in the CFL (2011-12) where he returned 12 kickoffs for 252 yards (21.0 ypr) and a touchdown and 90 punts for 1,198 yards

(13.3 ypr) and fi ve touchdowns.

Chicago added Micheal Spurlock and Armanti Edwards on the same day (June 3) this offseason. Spurlock has appeared in 67 games over

seven NFL seasons with seven teams prior to coming to Chicago, collecting 2,594 yards and three touchdowns on 107 kickoff returns (24.2

ypr), 780 yards and two touchdowns on 81 punt returns (9.6 ypr) and 11 special teams tackles.

Edwards has appeared in 41 games over four seasons with the Carolina Panthers (2010-13) and Cleveland Browns (2013), returning 40

punts for 281 yards (7.0 ypr) and 15 kickoffs for 295 yards (19.7 ypr).

Michael Ford returns to Chicago after seeing action in 12 games during his 2013 rookie season, collecting 37 yards on fi ve returns (7.4 ypr)

of pooched kickoffs. Last preseason, Ford had 11 kickoff returns for 368 yards (33.5 ypr), including a long of 100 yards.

PLACE KICKERS (1)

The third-most accurate kicker in NFL history (86.0 percent, 234-of-272) and second-leading point scorer (1,025) in Chicago Bears history,

Robbie Gould returns for his 10th season with the team after signing a four-year extension last December. Gould needs just 10 fi eld goals made

and 92 points to surpass Kevin Butler for the most in franchise history in each category. Gould occupies the top seven highest single-season

fi eld goal percentages in team history, including a franchise best mark of 89.7 percent (26-of-29) reached in both 2008 and last season. His

seven 100-point seasons and nine seasons with 20-plus fi eld goals made are most in team history. Gould also connected on franchise record

58-yard fi eld goal in 2013.

PUNTERS (2)

The punting competition is a battle between rookie Pat O’Donnell and fi rst-year veteran Tress Way.

The Bears selected O’Donnell in the sixth round (191st overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft. O’Donnell appeared in 54 games for Cincinnati

(2009-12) and Miami (2013) during his collegiate career with 234 punts for 10,168 yards (43.5 avg). 78 of his punts were downed inside the

opponent’s 20 yard line. In 2013, O’Donnell set Miami’s single-season record for yards-per-punt average (47.1).

Way is in his second training camp with the Bears after joining the team as an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma last year. Way ap-

peared in 53 games for the Sooners with 250 punts for 10,988 (44.0 avg). He landed 91 punts inside the 20 and had 71 punts over 50-plus

yards during his four-year career with a long of 85. He ranks No. 1 in OU history with a 44.0 yards-per-punt average. Last preseason, Way had

six punts for 229 yards (38.2 avg.) with one landing inside-the-20 and one touchback.

LONG SNAPPERS (2)

Like the punting competition, the long snapper battle is a two-man battle between Chad Rempel and Brandon Hartson.

Rempel is a 10-year CFL vet is in his fi rst NFL season after appearing in 111 games for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2005), Toronto Ar-

gonauts (2006-13) and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2008), amassing 50 special teams tackles. He also had 282 receiving yards on 21 receptions

(13.4 avg) with two touchdowns as a receiver on offense during his time in the CFL.

Hartson spent 3 preseason games as Bears long snapper in 2013 as an undrafted free agent out of Houston. Collegiately, Hartson served

as Houston’s long snapper for four seasons (2009-12), recording six tackles and recovered a fumble on a muffed punt.

Below is a list of major rules changes for the upcoming 2014 NFL season:

Rules-Section-Article

1-3: Extends uprights an additional fi ve feet above the cross bar from 30 to 35 feet.

4-3-2, 4-4: The game clock will remain running after a quarterback sack outside two minutes of either half.

12-2-1, 12-2-6, 3-5: Prohibits a blocker from rolling up on the side of the leg(s) of a defender.

14-3-5, 14-4-2, 3: Changes spot of enforcement for certain defensive fouls committed behind the line of scrimmage to the previous spot.

Changes spot of enforcement for defensive fouls committed during a running play before a change of possession, and for post-possession fouls

committed by the receiving team during punts.

15-9-3: Allows Referee to consult with members of the NFL Offi ciating department at the League offi ce Command Center during replay reviews.

15-9-4, 5: Expands reviewable plays to include recovery of a loose ball in the fi eld of play.

2014 RULES CHANGES

EXTRA POINTS DURING THE 2014 PRESEASON

During the Hall of Fame Game and Preseason Weeks 1 and 2 on extra point attempts following a touchdown, the ball will be spotted at 15-yard

line. Two-point conversion attempts will continue to be spotted at the 2-yard line. The scoring team must declare what their intent is prior to the

spotting of the ball.

If during the attempt, the defense commits a foul, the offensive/kicking team can choose to change their option and attempt a two-point

conversion from the 1-yard line or re-kick with the spot being placed depending on the yards assessed on the foul. The offense/kicking team

can also accept the outcome of the attempt on the play the foul was committed and assess the penalty on the kickoff.

A team can also change their intent following a timeout, if the timeout is made before the snap.

If an extra point snap is muffed and the offensive/kicking team recovers and gets the ball into the endzone, they will be given two points.

Once again, this rule is currently only scheduled to be in place during the Hall of Fame Game and Weeks 1 and 2 of the preseason.
