TRANSCRIPT
As I write this, the summer is just about half way over. Each year just seems to speed
by more quickly than the one before. It has been a nice summer though - not too
hot and not too cool - just about right!
For those of you who were not able to attend our final meeting of the year in June, it
was a fun-filled day. Kim unveiled the projects for next year and there are lots of
beautiful and fun new pieces to look forward to. After the program
(“Independence Day” from Needle Delights), led by Nancy Hartman, we closed out
last year’s Challenge and kicked off the Challenge for the coming year. I'm still
basking in the glory of having completed Linda Reinmiller's "Dreaming of Geometry"
for this last year's Challenge. Since then, I've been catching up on projects that I put
aside for the final push to complete the Challenge. The Challenge is lots of fun, but
it's also nice to work on what you want, when you want. The luncheon was quite
tasty, and I would like to thank all the Board members for the delicious salads and
desserts that they brought to share with us.
As we wrap up the old year and head into a new chapter year, I would like to thank
all of our volunteers (both the Board members and those who agree to teach
particular projects) for all the time and energy that they give to keep our chapter
running smoothly. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes, so please
take every opportunity to let these wonderful ladies know that you appreciate their
efforts.
At the National level, ANG's 2017 "Stitchers Go West" Seminar in Anaheim, CA is
coming up at the end of August. This year, instead of having a silent auction at
Seminar, an online auction will be held during the week of Seminar. This will give
those who are not able to travel to Anaheim the opportunity to participate in this
wonderful shopping event. It's always fun to see what unexpected treasures have
made their way into the auction. Also, we are finally making real progress on the
new website. The first phase of the new website could be online by the time you
read this but, if not, it will almost certainly be up soon after that. The technological
capabilities of ANG's new website should enhance ANG's ability to offer a wide
range of benefits to its members. Finally, although there have been a number of
hiccups in transitioning the magazine to the new publication services company, the
Needle Pointers Committee and the Board have been working hard to resolve those
issues and to improve both the quality and the timeliness of the magazine. Hopefully,
those issues will be substantially resolved by the time the September issue is published.
In the meantime, I hope that each of you is enjoying your summer, and I’m looking
forward to seeing you all in September.
Until then, keep stitching!

Ongoing Project –Tapestry Treasures—DebBee’s Designs
Now that we’ve finished the seasonal logs from Kathy Rees, I’ve tried to find a design that may also now entice
those of you who just didn’t buy into the popular Logs series. ☺Tapestry Treasures was intended to be a
teaching piece, but didn’t get into her portfolio as she designed this before she really got started teaching.
Tapestry Treasures is filled with all sorts of fun stitches and patterns, many of them invented by Jean Hilton. Eight
distinct motif areas provide plenty of challenge for experienced stitchers, while the thorough instructions and
diagrams guide novice stitchers through step by step. There are 4 colorways, one for each season. The cover
pattern shows the Summer colorway. All four colorways will be listed here, in the newsletter. (See Page 4)
Cost: $39.00
Deadline: August 12

Correspondence Courses
My thanks to the members that signed up for the Pat
Mazu Correspondence Course, I Can Do It…A Simple
Approach to Design Theory and Creativity. The
registration has been submitted to ANG and the
course will begin shortly.
The current Correspondence Courses were presented
for feedback in the last newsletter. Based on
feedback the next Correspondence Course will be
Gated Secrets by Sandra Arthur.
The Course Description reads as follows:
This dimensional needlepoint project, Gated Secrets by
Sandra Arthur, explores many techniques to add
interest and challenge. Detailed descriptions, color
photos, and stitch illustrations walk you through
techniques of appliqué, trapunto, and sponge
painting on the canvas. Trapunto is a decorative
quilted effect using padding and by stitching around
the outline of the design area. Stumpwork variations
add dimension and texture. Stitching includes
needleweaving and many additional showcase
stitches such as Nobuko, buttonhole on a knot,
darning, bargello, mosaic, raised stem stitch, and
combination stitches. Experience working with
fantastic suggested threads such as Pepper Pot Silk,
Burmilana, Gumnut, ThreadworX, Rainbow Gallery, and
others.
Please note that there is no kit available for this class.
The pricing schedule for all Correspondence Courses is
$90 for a group registration and $30 per student
teaching fee. In order to make the course cost
effective, we need 5 people to sign up for the course.
With 5 people, the cost for the registration fee would
be $18 ($90 divided by 5) and the cost for the teaching
fee would be $30 making the cost per student $48. If
there are more than 5 registrants, the cost of the
registration fee goes down. For this course, the text can
be downloaded for free or there is a $35 fee for a color
printout plus shipping which is to be determined. The
deposit for holding your place in the course will be $40
with the balance due in October prior to the
submission of group registration.
If you are interested in the course, please fill out the
form in the back of the newsletter and either send it to
me or bring to the September or October meeting.
The deadline for registration will be the October
meeting. Please let me know if you have any
questions.

Workshops
Our June meeting was so fun! How many people have
already made progress on their Challenge project for
next June? Not me, no surprise, but I bet Pat has! So
excited for our 2017-2018 workshops but we have less
detail than I would like because we are making some
changes to the schedule. We will post updates as
soon as we know additional details and discuss these in
our monthly guild meetings.
We start our year off with a bang. Toni Gerdes joins us
in September for Fire and Ice and Sue Reed in
October. Sue has designed a new piece for us! Libby
Sturdy will be teaching a workshop in March. She is
pondering what will be best! Kurdy Biggs offered us
some great options for teaching pieces in April, we
picked Blue Ridge Reflections! And we end the year
with a great two day workshop with Tony Minieri—
details to come!
A quick reminder about workshop policies: if you sign
up for a workshop, you must attend at least one full
day of the workshop. On occasion, the designer may
specify that attendance both days is required. If the
workshop is a pilot class you must attend both days.
Please be sure to check your schedule before signing
up for a workshop to ensure you will be able to attend.
Once you have been included in a workshop’s final
count, the $25.00 workshop deposit is non-refundable
unless your spot is filled from a workshop waiting list.
All sign-ups must be by mail, sent to Pat Warren 10817
Martindale Drive Westchester, IL 60154-5020 and be
accompanied by a $25.00 deposit. A date, on or
before which the workshop coupon may be mailed
and considered as a first day registration is indicated
on every coupon and published in this newsletter.
Every coupon (with deposit) post-marked on or before
the designated first day date will be considered a first
day member registration. The deadline date to register
will also be shown on the coupon and published in the
newsletter. Workshops that have not filled will be open
to non-members after this deadline date. Non-
members will be asked to pay a $30.00 non-member
fee in addition to the workshop cost.
The cost of our workshops includes many things. First
there is the kit fee for the class that is really determined
by the size of the piece and the number and type of
threads. There is a large range in these costs from
$90.00 all the way up to $220.00. We try to offer
workshops with a variety of kit fees each year. Other
costs include the instructor’s teaching fee for two days,
the instructor’s travel costs which generally includes
airfare and ground transportation to their home airport,
the instructor’s room and board for the weekend, if
PAGE 8 CHI CAGO ANG NEWS
Workshops-continued
applicable and the Park District room rental fee. We
know that workshop prices have increased over the
years and we do our best to minimize all costs so
workshops remain affordable for the guild.
Keep in mind that you can sign up for any open
workshop shown below as soon as your receive this
newsletter. If you are going to wait and sign up later
make sure you keep in mind the deadline date.

September 30 and October 1, 2017 Fire & Ice
by Toni Gerdes
We are so happy to welcome Toni back to Chicago
ANG. She has taught at ANG national seminars
multiple times and is a prolific designer which is so
wonderful. We are fortunate enough to be able to
offer one of those designs, Fire & Ice, as a workshop. It
is an amazing piece. Toni holds Teachers’ Certification
from the National Academy of Needlearts (NAN) and is
currently serving on their board as NAN coordinator
This dramatic depiction of Fire & Ice flames the
imagination with an inferno of hot combustion & ice
crystals. You will explore many different shades &
textures of red threads as you create the towering red
polygons that burst into flames; these include Gloriana
silk, cotton, Planet Earth silk, Thread Gatherers cotton,
Empress Silk, Treasure Braid & Petite Silk Lame Braid. On
the beautiful smoke gray Congress cloth the ice
crystals form above the flames in vertical
parallelogram shapes using purple, green and metallic
white threads including Petite Silk Lame Braid, Sparkle!
Braid, & Gloriana silk. This intermediate level design is
approximately 5 ½ x 10”.

October 28 & 29, 2017: Eclectic Interlude by
Sue Reed We are always so happy to have Sue with us. She has
taught at ANG national seminars multiple times and
this is a piece we have not offered yet from her many
ANG classes because she has always had so many
great options for us to choose.
Sue has designed a new piece for us. Needing a
break from more structured geometrics (and a request
to design a piece for a Sudbury House jewelry box) led
me to Eclectic Interlude. The goal of this workshop is to
allow you the freedom to play with threads and colors
within the 15 patterns. In addition to marked canvas
and booklet, the kit contains full skeins/card/reels of:
- one Watercolour
- three Vineyard Silks
-three Splendor Silks
- two #12 Kreinik tapestry braids
- two packets of delicas and/or size 14 beads
- pearl beads
- size 11 beads - accent
- beading needles and tapestry needles
Color choices:
#1 - “Shenandoah” with blue/sage green/pink
#2 - “Appalachia” with purple/green/gold
#3 - Cheyenne” with green/berry/muskmelon
#4 - “Fiesta” with teal/spice/muskmelon
Don’t miss this great opportunity to stitch a new piece
from Sue!!!

April 14th and April 15th, 2018: Blue Ridge
Reflections by Kurdy Biggs The design elements of Blue Ridge Reflections are
based on Kurdy’s experience as a child growing up in
the Blue Ridge. Throughout the design the stitches
mimic various aspects of the region. Mountains,
streams, flowers and sky all combining into a finished
piece that resembles a stained glass design. 30
different stitches will be completed using a variety of
threads named below, all based around the Caron
Collection Appalachia over dyed silk floss. Students will
create their own design by attaching circles, diamonds
or squares, stitched separately, onto their finished
design.

during guild meetings when we have choices to
evaluate.
