Could New Schools Be Opening In Chestermere and LangdonRVS holds their three year capital plan debate

With the rapid population increase that has been seen in Chestermere and surrounding area it is no surprise that the demand for more services and amenities be-comes increasingly noticed as well This is very much the case with Chestermere and area schools as when new schools are built in our area they are typically full or very close to full before they even open their doors But that pressure may be easing up when it comes to our schoolsRocky View School (RVS) Trustee Bev LaPeare shared

some very exciting news that should make both teachers and parents heave a sigh of relief RVS had their Capital Plan debate on Thursday March 17th and there are new schools for the areas of Chestermere and Langdon being requested for each of the 3 years ldquoSchool Authorities are required to submit a 3-year capital plan to Alberta Education by April 1 2016 How it works is all Boards in Alberta submit their requests by that date and the prov-ince first determines whatrsquos needed for health and safety reasons and those are allocated first After that they look at utilization programing needs and modernizations We are still waiting to hear about approvals from last yearrsquos Plan and we expect to hear something after the provin-cial budget announcement in Aprilrdquo explained LaPeare On the first year of the Capital Plan LaPeare is asking

for a new K-9 school in Chestermere to deal with the growing population there ldquoEast Lake School is quickly filling up and this new school would decant students

from Prairie Waters Rainbow Creek and Chestermere Lake Middle Schoolrdquo added LaPeare In year one it is also being asked for a replacement

school for Indus School ldquoIt was constructed in 1951 and is in need of modernization appropriate program spaces and upgraded mechanical systems that would all end up exceeding 75 of the replacement cost This would fall under the Governmentrsquos Small School by Necessity requestrdquo explained LaPeare In the second year of the Capital Plan they are request-

ing the build of the new Langdon High School La-

Peare explained saying ldquoWe (RVS) purchased a 45 acre section of land many years ago jointly with the county and wersquove been working together to plan the site in order to have a high school and a recreation center built on the land The county is responsible for the recreation com-ponent but there are lots of synergies to be had by jointly having it on the same piece of landrdquoWhat could be considered the biggest request in

this Capital Plan is a new high school ldquoWe are going to be asking the province for a new High School in Chestermere as a replacement school for the current Chestermere High School The entire Chestermere High School needs to be modernized to more appropriately meet the needs of student and mechanical systems need huge upgrades The cost of this is greater than 75 of the cost of a replacement school The two new high schools wonrsquot be built until therersquos sufficient student numbers to ensure adequate programing in both schools The way Langdon and Chestermere are growing though it sure wonrsquot take long We are also asking for another K-5 school in Langdon in year two of the Capital Planrdquo said LaPeare The final year of the three year plan will show the

request for another K-9 school in Chestermere as the growth there is expected to continue and wersquoll need another school by then to again try to accommodate students according to Trustee LaPeare ldquoIrsquom over the moon excited One more thing in rela-

tion to the Chestermere High School Replacement is that part of my debate to get it on the plan was about student safety Getting the school off of the 791 will eliminate the need for our young drivers as well as staff and parents to be navigating that turn onto the number 1 highwayrdquo

As children there are those wide eyed dreams and herorsquos that make childhood such a magical time To take part in a sport or extra circular to be like your hero with hours of hard work practice wins and losses builds in the love of the game Then imagine getting the opportunity to join the pros and hang out with your heroesFor nine year old Trey Johnson March 14th will forever

be an evening he never forgets This grade 3 student at Prairie Waters Elementary School has played hockey for five yearshellipyep since the tender age of four this young-ster has been tearing it up on the ice and plays for the Chestermere Lakers ndash Novice 3 Last year this talented young man won the ldquoWheatland Athletic Association Players Choice Awardrdquo which will no doubt always be a memorable event for Johnson but something tells me what happened last week might top itOn Monday March 14 2016 nine year old Trey

Johnson took to the ice with the Calgary Flames prior to them facing off with the St Louis Blues His mom Gwen explains ldquoTrey has been playing hockey for the past 5 years but it wasnrsquot until this past year that his passion for hockey and the Flames really developedrdquo When his mom saw how much he enjoyed watching the

Flames on TV or following their every move on her twit-ter she decided at the beginning of the Flames season to enter him in the Scotiabank Skater contest On February 11th Gwen received an email stating ldquoYour day is con-

firmedrdquo ldquoTrey was ecstatic when he found out Since then he has been counting down the days to skate with the Flames and possibly stand beside Johnnyrdquo ndash of course referring to the talented Johnny Gaudreau who it Treyrsquos favourite player When selected to be the Scotiabank Skater it is quite

Positive Ticketing Initiative Wraps UpBut you can still refer a youth that you see doing amazing things

Back on Canada Day 2015 the Positive Ticketing initiative kicked off in our city The RCMP teamed up with Synergy Stepping Stones to Mental Health and Chestermere Addictions and Mental Health with the support of Chestermere FCSS to bring the Chestermere Positive Youth Ticketing Campaign where youth lsquocaughtrsquo doing amazing things were ticketed While out in the community RCMP officers were

ticketing positive youth behaviour with gift cards to local businesses Some of the things our youth were ticketed for were obeying traffic laws while driving wearing a helmet while on their bikes and picking up litter in our

public spaces Youth who received a ticket and then went online to participate in a survey were then entered into a draw to win some major prizes like tickets to this yearrsquos X-fest an iPad mini pre-paid VISAs and moreOn March 18th this amazing campaign wrapped up

and a celebration was held at the Waiting Room Cafeacute Over 250 tickets were handed out since the July 1st kick off which shows that our youth do amazing things in our communityThe wrap up celebration had games draw prizes yum-

my treats and even a visit from members of the RCMP that played an important role handing out the tickets Three awesome prizes were drawn from the positive

ticketing winners and door prizes were available for those

in attendance Congratulations to winners Waseem Al-Nouamani Noah Abdul Rahman and Jessica AntonBut just because the campaign is over doesnrsquot mean

you still canrsquot recommend a youth for a positive ticket If you know a young person in our community in the schools or in your neighbourhood that is doing some-thing amazing you can contact the RCMP detachment and lsquoreportrsquo them and they are still eligible to receive a positive ticket Congratulations to all of those amazing youth that were

awarded a positive ticket and keep up the good work You never know who might be watching and lsquoreportrsquo you for being an awesome member of our city

First Chestermere Scout Group Fearful Of ExtinctionLack of leaders means the end of the local Scouting group

The 1st Chestermere Scout Group proudly serves Chestermere and surrounding areas offering a quality program for Beaver Cub and Scout aged youth Scouts Canada has over 100000 members and has been a valued organization in Chestermere for many years But it could all come to an end as the local group is struggling to find leaders A minimum of two leaders is mandatory but three to

four per section (beaver cubs scouts) is ideal to cover illness work holidays etc and to help with planning ldquoMandatory leader to youth ratio is 1-5 for beavers and

1-6 for cubs and scoutsrdquo added Scout leader Trudy Lowe The group now finds themselves in a shortage of leaders

as current leaders are not returning next year and no new

ones are registering Lowe continued ldquoWe are giving our current leadership until April 15th to decide but from what we know to date we have no beaver leaders and possibly 1 cub leader We are hoping to restart up Scouts again and if successful we will more than likely run this program at the same time as cubs on Monday nights to help with the ratios for both of these sectionsrdquo Without the mandatory number of leaders the 1st

Chestermere Scout Group will cease to exist ldquoMainly we need volunteers for both group committee and each section We would also lose our current meeting space at Rainbow Creek Elementary and CRCA Once we give this up it will be extremely hard to get the space back If 1st Chestermere folds we are supposed to also give all of our equipment and any money left in our bank account which allows us to run the programs back to Scouts Canadardquo The 1st Chestermere Scout Group has currently ceased

all fundraising for now as if they end up shutting down the program all the funds raised will get handed over to Scouts Canada This includes their annual spring bottle drive So an urgent call is going out for volunteers to step up

and help keep this much needed organization alive The screening process for potential leaders is as followsbull Application which includes 3 reference checks and

signing Scout Canadarsquos Code of Conductbull A ldquocleanrdquo Police

Record Check and Vul-nerable Sector Check

bull On-line training course ndash approximately takes 10 hours to complete

bull A selection interview by 2 members of group committee which takes approximately 2 hours

bull Following approval the time commitment for leaders is

bull Attend the weekly section meetings with youth (1 frac12 hours for beavers and 2 - 2 frac12 hours for cubsscouts ndash these times include set up clean up when the youth are not in attendance)

bull Attend monthly group committee meetings (1 frac12 hours)

bull 2-3 weekends a year to attend camps (Friday night ndash Sunday noon) with the youth

bull Therersquos always a pos-sibility of running out-ings on weekends (4 hours max) as needed

approximately 3 outings between September - Maybull Planning meeting amongst the leadership team for

each section ndash approximately 2-3 hours every 3 months Ideally all leaders should be involved in the planning phase and it shouldnrsquot end up on 1 leader being responsible for all These times will vary depending on how leaders there are for each section ndash more hands less work

bull A minimum of 1 hour of detailed planning for each meeting

Lowe explains ldquoWe follow Scoutingrsquos Mission State-ment ldquoThe mission of Scouting is to contribute to the education of young people through a value system based on the Scout Promise and Law to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in societyrdquoldquoBeing part of the leadership team is FUN Itrsquos reward-

Rainbow Creek Elementary Receives $500 GrantGrade three students learning early how to pay it forward

The Grade 3 students at Rainbow Creek Elementary School classes participating in the Rocky View Schoolsrsquo Engineering Challenge Through the Engineering Chal-lenge the students are learning to ldquoThink Like Engineersrdquo by going through the process of designing and building prototypes for a structure they think the Kindergarten children would like in their planned Outdoor Learning Space As they follow the engineering cycle Grade 3 students

have interviewed and consulted with the Kindergarten students to identify needs explored building techniques then imagined planned and improved their prototypes with their team ldquoStudents will be sharing their proto-types and their learning journey on March 30 2016 at our Student-Led Conferences with their community membersrdquo explained Janice Cook Grade 3 teacher at Rainbow Creek Students have uncovered the curriculum through an

exploration of the questions ldquoWhat does it mean to think like an engineerrdquo and ldquoHow can I use the engineering cycle ndash identify explore imagine plan prototype improve communicate ndash in my projectrdquoAn important part of any project is the funding

and the collaborations that occur Rainbow Creek Elementary School was recently awarded $50000 by the Calgary Educational Partnership Founda-tion (CEPF) by way of The Citizenship in Action Grant was awarded to Rainbow Creek Elementary Schoolrsquos Grade 3 Engineering Challenge projectOn Monday March 14th Din Ladak and Rebec-

project is the Lowersquos store visit on March 16th to the Cross Iron Mills Lowersquos store ldquoThey were amazing in sending out 5 associates with 85 Build and Grow

kits to build with all of the Grade 3 students Each stu-dent built one of the Lowersquos Build and Grow kit projects They each got to keep their own safety goggles carpen-terrsquos apron and badge We had lots of amazing lsquoexpertrsquo helpers (parent volunteers) who were fantastic in helping the students assemble their birdhouses and planters There were lots of hammers tapping (about 40 at once) but the experience was so much fun for allrsquo explained Grade 3 teacher Janice Cook

The History Of The Chestermere Regional Food BankA look back at such an important organization

It is with much pride that the Chestermere Regional

Food Bank is gearing up to celebrate their 10th anniver-

sary They have seen ups downs moves staffing and

volunteer changes ndash but they remain a vital part of our

city

We are embarking on a ten week feature in count down

to the big anniversary celebration on May 28th This

event will be held in the No Frills parking lot and will

have everything from live music a BBQ silent auction

face painting bouncy castles and much more There

will also be a chance for local vendors to participate at

the event in a very unique way so stay tuned as more

details will be coming out over our countdown

In the coming weeks wersquoll be taking a look on a year by

year basis on how the Chestermere Regional Food Bank

came to be the changes theyrsquove seen and what the fu-

ture holds for them But like any good story we must go

back to the beginning It is also the hope that this look

into the Food Bank will increase awareness and support

for an organization that truly does lsquoFeed The Needrsquo

Back in the fall of 2006 an ad appeared in the local

newspaper requesting help for the Southeast Rockyview

Food Bank It seemed that the majority of clients were

from Chestermere and since they were picking up

food donations from the Chestermere Safeway and the

Chestermere Recreation Centre taking them to the Food

Bank in Indus turning them into hampers and bringing

them back to Chestermere their volunteers were getting

just a little burned out

Shortly thereafter a meeting was held at the Indus Rec

Centre at which three local residents attended ndash Doug

Goudie Cindy Verbonac and Mardi Oel It was at that

meeting where they were strongly encouraged to form

their own Food Bank and were assured that Southeast

Rockyview would help in any way possible Doug Goud-

ie took this back to the Chestermere Lions Club and with

the help of Chris Bishop from the Southeast Rockyview

Food Bank preparations began to start our own Food

Bank ndash the Chestermere Regional Food Bank

That Christmas Cindy and Doug prepared and dis-

tributed Christmas hampers in Indus bringing the last

quarter of 2006 total for Chestermere to 15 hampers At

that time the Chestermere population was 9481 and the

Chestermere Food Bank had 3 volunteers ndash and thatrsquos

how it all began

The Chestermere Regional Food Bank is holding its

Annual General Meeting on Monday April 18th at 7pm

at the Food Bank located at 105 100 Rainbow Road

They are inviting the public to come out and meet their

volunteers and see what volunteer opportunities are

available

Storyhive was founded in 2014 by TELUS and provides grants mentorship and distribution opportunities to creators based in BC and Alberta They have recently launched two new editions Music Video Small Town Edition and Web Series

Music Videos Small Town Edition kicked off March 18th and runs through to April 22nd with the finalists being announced in May Emerging musicians and filmmakers based in Lloydminster and other communities outside of the greater Calgary and Edmonton area can apply as project leads for a chance to win one of fourteen 10000 grants (7 in BC amp 7 in Alberta) to produce a music video The public will then vote for their favourite music video and the winner will be announced in July and will receive a residency scholarship at The Banff Centre valued at $10000 Interested applicants can apply on wwwstoryhivecom starting Friday (Note This project is still open to

world whisky shortage with rising demand exceeding the supply of the stocks aging in oak barrels in the distilleries of the world Say goodbye to the smooth and sophisticated

whiskies that have been aged 5 7 or even 10+ years and hello to the new breed of 3-year old (or even younger) whiskies still rough and unre-fined after a too-brief visit to the oak barrelsIf the whisky shortage wasnrsquot bad enough

news now we must contend with the looming hop shortage in the beer industryFor those readers who may not be aware hops

are the flowers of the Humulus lupulus plant a robust vine closely related to the wacky tabaccy plant more commonly known as Cannabis sativaWhile there are similarities hops is used

almost exclusively as a bittering and antiseptic agent in beer and will in no way give you the munchies or make you want to chill out while listening to Pink FloydWith the growing popularity of craft beers

hop usage in the brewing process has been growing exponentially and is now exceeding the available supplyIt all started when a new beer style called the

Pacific Northwest IPA exploded in popularity in the early part of the new milleniumWhile the insipid macrobrews might only use

half a pound of hops per barrel of beer the crafty brands from the small producers were using up to 10 pounds of hops for every barrel of beerThat 20x increase didnrsquot make much of a dif-

ference in the supply chain at first just because the craft brewers were so smallHowever as the popularity of craft beer con-

tinued to increase the hop farmers of the world have struggled to keep up with demandIt doesnrsquot help that nearly 80 of the hops

produced in North America come from the Yakima Valley in Washington state just a few hundred kilometres south of the British Colum-bia border

Low snowfall over the past few winters had

led to decreased water runoff in the spring season which lead to a few particularly dry growing seasons With so much hop produc-tion concentrated in a small area the impact has been significantMuch like different breweries have their own

special yeast strain there are countless types of hops with differing aromatic and bittering qualitiesHowever the most popular hops of the day

are the Simcoe Amarillo and Citra varieties which the craft brewers just canrsquot get enough of While the large breweries have supply con-

tracts with hop farmers several years in ad-vance it is the small and mid-size brewers who find themselves being squeezed out of the market due to lack of available supplyThe next year or so may see a decline in

availability of the ever-popular Pale Ale and IPA styles if only because the hops are unavailable or unreasonably expensiveWhen faced with the choice of paying an extra

dollar for a pint of IPA consumers may instead opt for a more malt-forward brew like an Am-ber Ale an Irish Red or even a StoutYour humble narrator has often waxed poetic

about his love for the hoppy IPA beers available in our fair province and will shed a tear if they become unavailableLuckily the small craft brewers are nothing if

not crafty with many investigating alternative hop varietals as well as branching out into oth-er bittering agents such as sage lingonberries or bog myrtle While these alternative plants do not meet the

stringent requirements of the Reinheitsgebot Bavarian Beer Purity Law of 1516 the boozers of the world may overlook this indiscretion to keep drinking their bitter beersYour intrepid liquor reporter has already

started growing hop vines in the backyard with an expected first harvestable crop in 2018 Perhaps I will be able to stave off the inevitable with my own private stash of hopsShould the worst come to pass and the hoppy

beers that we know and love become priced out of the market for all but the 1 of mono-cle-wearing moneybag-carrying beer drinkers your humble narrator will have to cry tears into his beer although it probably wonrsquot be a hoppy one

OPINIONBeware of the ldquodevelopedrdquo unde-

veloped basement

I have been a resident of Chestermere since 2008 We bought our house new A standard 2-story detached home with a non-developed basement After a casual chat with a fellow Chestermere resident she kindly alerted me to check my property tax assessment to see if the City has been charging me for a devel-oped basement Following her advice I did check and to my surprise I found that the basement in my house is listed as 100 developed and this has been going back as far as 2011The standard tax assessment notice that

comes in the mail (you probably just received it recently since it is tax season) does not mention any details or give any break-out as how the property tax is charged Neither does your tax bill that is going to be mailed later It only lists the assessed dollar value and that is allShort of going to the City personally and

ask them for details about the only way to find out whatrsquos being considered for your property tax is to go to the website referenced by the City (httpswebmapchestermerecaContentServerLoginaspx) choose ldquoPublic Accessrdquo and search for your property It will be highlighted in the map Click on it and out comes a list of ldquoAssessment Reports by Yearrdquo They only go as far back as 2011 Check the ldquoImprovement Reportrdquo to see if your basement is listed as developed Also look for any other improvements that you may not actually have The report is a bit cryptic it states something like ldquoBsmt Finish (All - ) -- Roomsrdquo In plain language this means that your basement is fully finishedTalking to other residents in my neigh-

bourhood and in Chestermere in general I was shocked to find out that many of them do not have a developed basement but yet their property tax report states the contrary The bad news is there is no recourse to get back your property tax money from previous years You can only dispute it with the City for this yearrsquos tax assessment and going forward You want some more bad news There does not seem to be any record (at least not post-ed) for the years prior to 2011 So no one really knows how far back this practice has been followed by the CityI feel very upset about this and it seems

unfair and unethical for the City to charge unsuspecting residents for some-thing they donrsquot have and never had Now it becomes the home owner respon-

sibility to prove the contrary Just think of all the property tax money that have been charged unjustifiably all those years You do the mathI urge all Chestermere residents to check

their property tax reports and talk to the City about removing any improvements or upgrades that do not actually exist

Here we are now 2 months into col-lecting signatures for 2 petitions Here is what council has to say1Mayor Patricia Matthews said attempts

by city council to meet with petition organizers have been rebuffed and shersquos still not entirely sure of the specific con-cerns being raisedldquoWe know therersquos a petition but we ha-

venrsquot had the opportunity to talk to them about it mdash we made the offer but they havenrsquot taken us up on thatrdquo she said

2ldquoEvery concern of the residents is a concern to council

3ldquoIf they choose to take these concerns to the public thatrsquos their prerogativerdquo

4Petition organizers have been canvass-ing residents for weeks trying to drum up support including regular weekends allowing people to drive up and scribble their name

The facts are

1We have approached the petition organizers and they have not agreed to meet with councilMs Bold was the only petition organizer

every approached by Council Ms Bold was contacted informally via Facebook by a councillor in January 2016 She thanked the councillor her for the offer and advised her that she had enough information to move forward In February 2016 Ms Bold received another informal request via Facebook from another coun-cillor The tone of the message was very defensive The councillor requested a meeting with the entire city council Not wanting to have a 1 on 7 meeting with council Ms Bold requested a one-on-one meeting with the councillor that had been

in contact with her The councillor never agreed to a meeting No further commu-nication occurred

Mayor Matthews why have you not attempted to contact Ms Bold Would it not be in the best interest of the city to have a one-on-one with Ms Bold

Mayor Matthews suggests shersquos still not entirely sure of the specific concerns be-ing raised by the petition organizersMayor everything was relatively calm in

our city before it was suggested that the Chestermere Utility (CUI) would increase our rates by 25 At the same time we were also advised that the CUI had lost $14 million over a 3 year period without the knowledge of the CUI executives or its Directors (also council members) The signage on Rainbow road suggests

that tax increases are an issue as wellThe dots are there to connect

I am working with Ms Bold to collect sig-natures for the petitions I have attempt-ed to setup a meeting with a councillor at the February 18th rate increase vote This request was never accepted by the councillor The issue I wanted to discuss with the councillor was to gain a better understanding for how they decided to vote in favour of the rate increaseThe same councillor approached me and

a colleague in the Recreation Center and questioned why the Recreation Center gave us a location to collect signatures be-cause of the money council provided the Recreation Center They were reminded that they were giving tax payerrsquos money to the Recreation Center They then said they had given me too enough of their time and walked outAt the rate increase meeting on the 18th

of February there was no open discussion with the residents attending There was no attempt to setup a future meeting with residents that would allow questions from residents TransparencyDoes this sound like a council that are

open to discussion or care about the ma-jor concerns of the residents I understand why Ms Bold would not

accept a meeting with the entire council but felt more comfortable with a one-on-one meeting with the councillor request-ing the meeting

3ldquoIf they choose to take these concerns to the public thatrsquos their prerogativerdquoIt seems that is the only option available

to the residents Thanks to Ms Bold for her inspiration courage and drive This has put a great deal of pressure on her and her family


Mayor Matthews the residents are not scribbling their names on the petition These are very thoughtful and deliberate people taking time to print their name address and sign the petition They were also sharing their support and thanks How disrespectful can one be by insinuat-ing there is no serious thought or reflec-tion by those signing the petitionsAccording to a municipal affairs spokes-

woman the majority of petitions calling for municipal inquiries donrsquot go that far with only five being launched since 2012 from the 19 petitions that have been forwarded to the ministry

We strongly feel the residents of Chestermere deserve an inspection that is fair and just Chestermere deserve to be the number 6 inquiry launched since 2012When does the miss-information stop

and the real information become pub-lic to the Chestermere residents We deserve to hear the facts so we can better understand what is really going on

The timeless art of story-telling has a surprising way of drawing out laughter and tears good feelings and warm memories In an age of fast and accessible media live story telling seems like an archaic remnant of a simpler time - and it is in the very best senseWingfield Unbound played at Rosebud Theatre from

March 17-19 It is a one-actor ten character show played by the hilarious and tender hearted Rod Beattie This show is the fourth instalment of the Wingfield series which tells of life in the Persephone Township in South-ern Ontario and the foibles of Walt Wingfield stock-broker-turned-farmer In the spirit of the series Walt is inspired to preserve the local crumbling Hollyhock Mill by converting it into a museum Switching seamlessly

between local characters from the dysfunctional and hilarious town council to superstitious farmers Waltrsquos good idea turns into a comedy of errors It took no time to feel as though we were caught up in the eccentric and vaguely familiar life of a country community Quirky characters sporting all their oddities are a reminder that our own neighbourhoods can be places where the best stories beginRod Beattie and playwright Dan Needles show us that

2 in 10 said that their next door neigh-bours were very private These numbers may be from neighbour-

hoods in Britain but they could very well reflect the sentiment of neighbours here in Chestermere What do you think when you see these numbers Are they telling a positive or negative story about the state of neighbourhood life today If a survey was done here what would be your answersThere is hope for neighbourhood re-

lationships found in these studies They found that the vast majority of people deeply wanted better connections to others in their neighbourhoods 75 of people would like more community spirit in their city and over half feel that a better community spirit would make them happier and help them make new friends Chances are that your next door neighbours look forward to connecting with you even if itrsquos just to help when challenges ariseThere is one number that sticks out to

me the most Almost half of everyone surveyed said that they have experienced something surprising as a result of meeting a neighbour So whether you are shy or outgoing give out your house key or keep privately to yourself the fact that so many people have discovered something good from meeting their neighbours should give us all encouragement to step out and make our city better by simply connecting with those on our streetTherersquos a 10 in 10 chance you have

because that is what works best for me I am not an early riser if given the option of any extra hour of sleep or a workout sleep wins every time So I donrsquot make it an option I just do it I know if I donrsquot I wonrsquot make it to the gym at all If I donrsquot exercise in the morning other things including children work and the rest of the chaos of my everyday life will interfere and bump my exercise outWith exercise your body will take in

more oxygen and improve your blood circulation A morning workout will have you enjoying more physical and mental

energy alert mind and reduced stress for the day from this increased oxygen and improved circulation Morning exercise may also boost your

metabolic rate As result you will burn more calories through the day If you choose early mornings for your

workouts remember hitting the sack early will help Regular bed times will help you find the energy you need for your early workoutsAre you cringing at the idea of losing a bit

of sleep in order to get your workout in If sleep is going to win that battle every morning maybe it is best not to fight it and just plan your workouts for the end of the dayWorking out is a great way to relax and

in Olds at the 3AProvincial Championships The Lakers took on the 7 Wetaskiwin Sabres in the quarter-finals The Lakers came out slow but picked up their tempo and cruised to a 96 to 58 win Jeff Rodehutskors led the way with 28 points while Kareem Pires and Channer Yel-low-Horn each added 16 points This placed the Lakers in the semi-final against league rival George McDougall The Lakers knew they would be in tough The game was close the entire way but the Lakers prevailed winning 75-74 Aussim Saghir sparked the troops with 12 points off the bench and dozens of hustle plays Jeff Rodehut-skors had another dominating performance adding 34 points and 15 rebounds This led the Lakers to their 4th appearance in the championship game in the past 8 years Playing the 1 ranked Strathcona Christian Academy the Lakers knew they were in for a battle The Lakers had played SCA earlier in the season and suffered a close loss The Lakers had their best start to a game all year commanding an early 18-6 lead SCA fought back and held a 21-20 lead after 1 quarter The 2nd quarter was more of the same with the lead changing hands numerous times The Lakers held a 45-41 edge going into halftime The Lakers came out a little slow and SCA took a 64-57 lead Going into the 4th the Lakers were in tough With two minutes left SCA held a 6 point Some timely baskets and three key defensive plays tied the game at 83 and a rare overtime game in a Provincial Final In the overtime Jeff Rodehutskors continued his domination with 12 of the periods 14 points The Lakers won 97-94 in an incredibly exciting game Jeff had one of the most dominant Provincial Final games of all time He finished with 47 points 22 rebounds and 6 assists Mark Rodehutskors added 24 points and 24 rebounds as well It was a great end to a great season The boys finished with a league zone and provincial banner going unde-feated in playoffs Congratulations to all players coaches and the parents and fans that supported them

SENIOR GIRLSrsquo FINISH 4th at 3A PROVINCIALSThe Varsity Girls began its quest for a Provincial title

last Thursday night in Olds The 3rd ranked Lady Lakers faced the 5th ranked Morinville Wolves in a quarter-fi-nal matchup In a hard-fought game the team rallied from a thirteen point 3rd-quarter deficit to win 65-62 and advanced to the championship side semi-final on Friday night In front of a packed Olds College Gym the girls stepped on the court against the 1 ranked WRMeyer Rebels The South Zone Champions from

Taber came out strong and proved to be too much for the local squad to handle The 75-46 loss placed the Lady Lakers in the Bronze Medal Game The team played its final game on Saturday against the Edmonton Christian Lions The girls struggled early and never recovered to finish the tournament as the 4th place team The expe-rience will prove invaluable in the future as the team is very young returning 11 players next year The Lady Lak-ers had a fantastic season winning the league and zone championship and finishing 4th at Provincials Congratu-lations to the team and coaches and dedicated parents

Chestermere United FC Shines in Provincial SoccerMarch 11-13 was a weekend filled with indoor soccer

provincial games at various locations throughout Alber-ta CUFC sent five teams to provincials this indoor sea-son U12 girls U14 boys U16 girls U16 boys and U18 boys Two of the five teams advanced to the gold medal match After a hard fought battle the U12 girls won GOLD These young ladies played 20 games this sea-son without a loss including winning gold in the CMSA Winter Classic and gold at the Family Day Tournament in Red Deer The girls battled back from 3-2 deficit at the half of the final game holding their heads high and fought back with a 6-3 victory Congratulations to the coaching staff Coach Jason Coach Shawna Coach Martin and Manager Nancy As well a huge congratu-lations to the players Ava Brooklyn Chelsea Danae Gracie Kiana Madalyn Mariah Noor Riley Sophia and Tess We are all VERY proud of you The U16 girls are also a force to be reckoned with

These young ladies had a great season They finished league play as the top team They continued their ex-cellent play into Provincials and qualified for the Gold medal match The team was behind 3-1 in the second half The players showed great poise and maturity as they battled back to tie the match sending the game to penal-ty kicks Their opponents won on penalty kicks 4-3 The game was extremely well played by both teams and was watched by a very very large group of spectators

Congratulations to the U16 Girls (Mackenzie Brian-na Kiera Rachelle Zoe Alaira Lisa Paige Michaela Chayanne Jenna Grace Kaylie Madisen Haylee and Carmen) for all that they achieved this season including Gold in league play and Silver at ProvincialsPlease note that 2016 outdoor registrations are now

Serves 4

14 cup toasted fresh bread crumbs14 cup honey preferably avocado

honey14 cup coarse-ground mustard1 small rack of lamb (about 2

pounds) Sea salt Coarsely ground black pepper Granulated garlic1 cup strong brewed coffee or

espresso14 cup white wine

1 Preheat the oven to 375 F 2 Make a paste of the bread crumbs

honey and mustard in a small bowl mixing until just combined

3 Season the lamb rack with salt pepper and granulated garlic Spread the honey-mustard paste on the meat side of the rack Place the lamb rack in a baking dish just large enough to hold it preferably one that can also be placed directly on the stove top Pour the coffee into the bottom of the baking dish

4 Bake for 10 minutes or until the crust is set then baste with the pan drippings trying not to dissolve the

honey-mustard mixture Continue to bake until a meat thermometer reads 130 F 20 minutes or longer Keep a careful watch If your racks are small this may take less time Similarly larger racks will take longer When the proper temper-ature is reached remove from the oven Transfer the lamb rack to a warmed plate to rest while you prepare the sauce

5 Place the baking dish on the stove Simmer the drippings over the me-dium-high heat and add the wine to deglaze the pan stirring with a wooden spoon Add any additional juices that might have collected on the plate from the resting lamb Stir until the drippings and wine are well mixed and slightly thick about 5 minutes

6 Cut the rack into rib portions and serve with the warmed sauce

Note To make fresh crumbs simply cut a few slices of bread into tiny pieces or pulse a few slices in a food processor for a few seconds You are looking for coarse crumbs not grains of sand To toast toss in a dry saucepan over medium heat for a few minutes until the bread dries and turns golden brown

Water Week 5 fascinating facts about water in Chestermere

Submitted by the City of Chestermere One of Chestermerersquos very distinct and most celebrated

features is the 48 km long Chestermere Lake Howev-er there are many other special features about water in Chestermere - even a yearly festival dedicated to water With the celebration of Canada Water Week March 21-

27 and World Water Day on March 22 we are making a splash with five water facts in Chestermere 1 Chestermere LakeHistorical archives indicate that Chestermere Lake was

previously a wetland and filled for the first time in either 1905 or 1906 as part of a new irrigation system for set-

tlers While the lake was lsquocreatedrsquo Chestermere Lake was not formed by dredging (removal of sediments and debris underneath the lake) as there was a natural depression in the land While Chestermere Lake is most commonly known to-

day for recreational activities it is still actively used as an irrigation reservoir with outflowing canals at the northern and southern points of the lake 2 The Wetland Bylaw In an environmental resources inventory undertak-

en in 2012 there were 275 wetlands in Chestermere Chestermere created a Wetland and Riparian Land Conservation Strategy to help direct future land use and land development that recognizes the importance of our wetlands In September 2015 the Wetland Bylaw came into ef-

fect By creating a Wetland Bylaw Chestermere has gone above and beyond Provincial regulations to better protect our precious resource 3 Water SamplingChestermerersquos water is tested weekly from April 15 to

the second week of October at four locations around the lake The samples are taken directly to the Provincial lab

for analysis to ensure it is healthy for recreational activi-ties4 Storm Ponds Besides Chestermere Lake our community is home

to 10 storm ponds three dry ponds (areas that are dry under normal conditions but are designed to hold water during heavy rainfall) and several streams of water Storm ponds help collect and retain storm water during rainfall and snow runoff and ensure water is directed in the cor-rect places In February of 2016 Chestermere received a $590000 grant from the provincial government to im-prove the Westmere storm pond to ensure Chestermere is more flood resilient in the future 5 Celebrating water in Chestermere Water Festival is the annual celebration of summer on

I would like to begin by thanking the Chestermere Anchor City News for their efforts to keep our citizens informed entertained and made aware of our fine local businesses I truly value the oppor-tunity to give you my perspective on the issues As you know the 29th Legislature is in full swing and we are starting to see the governmentrsquos priorities for this session The very first Bill to be put forward was Bill 1 (go figure) This Bill is named the Promoting Job Creation and Diversifica-tion Act which allows the Minister to cre-ate and regulate programs This is actually the mandate laid out in the Ministerrsquos job description It is interesting that there was a need to create legislation to describe what the Minister would be responsible for We in the Wildrose would prefer ac-tion to mission statements We have had the pleasure of debating interim supply as well as supplemental supply since we do not have a budget The question is of course why is the budget delayed again We are not sure but I hope the government is exchanging ideology for common sense The Wildrose unveiled its 12 point jobs program this week and to quote the Leader of the Opposition ldquoWe hope it is taken in the spirit with which it was intendedrdquo It features reasonable common sense ideas to help Albertans get back to work upgrade their skills

reduce red tape lower small business taxes and take advantage of our knowl-edge infrastructure These are positive and tangible solutions and steps that have been offered by us to help our govern-ment and Albertans The Premier is being coy but we think she may be getting at least part of the message To see our jobs program have a look at wwwwildroseca We want to see business confidence and competitiveness gain some ground again The governmentrsquos job during an economic downturn is to not cause more harm Our unemployment rate has hit its highest level in 20 years We need our government to show us some hope and thoughtful ideas as to how they are going to move forward to help our province and our citizens Hiring a top AUPE union negotiator to handle the government side of negotiations with public sector unions does not inspire confidence it is like hav-ing the ldquofox guard the hen houserdquo as was stated by my colleague Derek Fildebrandt Smaller public sector wage increases are not exactly ldquorestraintrdquo The government needs to help job creators create jobs and stand up for pipelines We need to look at the diversity that already exists and play on our strengths as a province Mark 6 PM April 2 2016 on your cal-

March is a busy month for health and wellness It is lsquoNational Nutrition Monthrsquo and lsquoWorld Oral Health Dayrsquo falls on March 20th this year as well There is a strong connection between the health of our mouth and our overall health and wellness it is important for us to con-sider the impact each one has on the other Our diet can impact both our weight management and oral health in an adverse way The common denominator that links oral health and

nutrition is sugar Sugar impacts our health by spiking insulin beyond normal levels When this occurs excess insulin that is left over from what our body does not use is converted into fat and stored in our bodies Many people are starting to become more aware of the

amount of sugar they consume in the foods they eat however what most of us are not aware of is how hidden sugars sneak into our food and beverages Sugar can appear in your foods as molasses honey sorghum corn syrup high fructose corn syrup glucose fructose lactose dextrose sucrose galactose and maltose A considerable amount of sugar can be found in many

foods that most people would assume to be low in sugar such as spaghetti sauce bread ketchup low fat products and beverages such as Vitamin Water and Gatorade

1 Cup of Tomato Sauce = 10 grams of sugar2 Slices of White Bread = 3 grams of sugar

1 Tablespoon of Ketchup = 37 grams of sugar6oz Low-fat Yogurt = 14 grams of sugar1-20oz Bottle of Vitamin Water = 32 grams of sugar1-8oz Bottle of Gatorade = 14 grams of sugar Excess sugar in our diets is also very harmful to our

teeth Bacteria found inside the mouth feeds off of the sugar we eat Acid is produced which attacks the tooth

causing decay Avoiding sugar can be difficult especially when many healthy food options such and fruit and dairy products contain natural sugarsThe best way to avoid tooth decay from excess sugar is

to brush and floss after eating If this is not an option rinsing your mouth with water will help to clear excess food particles and any lingering sugar In addition to

brushing and flossing there are foods that help to clean your teeth after meals They include

bull Cheese Eating cheese between meals is very ben-eficial for your teeth Cheese raises the pH levels

in your mouth which in turn lowers the amount of acid and reduces your risk of developing tooth de-cay Cheese also increases the amount of saliva in your mouth which washes away sugars and excess food particles

bull Fibrous Fruits and Vegetables Eating fibrous foods such as apples carrots and celery clean your teeth while you eat and also help to produce saliva which washes away sugars Saliva also neutralizes the acid that causes tooth decay

It can be very easy for the amount of sugar in your diet to add up to an unhealthy amount If you find you have a sweet tooth after cutting out added and hidden sugars there are great alternatives out there such as Truvia and Stevia which are zero calorie all natural sweeteners derived from the Stevia Leaf Xylitol is another natural sweetener that has many benefits for your teeth There is some research that suggests Xylitol prevents the formation of cavities because the bacteria in the mouth is not able to use sugar to produce acid Artificial sweeteners such as Splenda (sucralose) Sweet and Low (sodium cycla-mate or saccharine) and NutraSweet (aspartame) are not recommended because of the adverse health effects they can have on your health Brushing and flossing between meals taking the time

to find out how much sugar is in the foods you eat and limiting unnecessary sugar from your diet are simple ways to become healthier overall

Could New Schools Be Opening In Chestermere and LangdonRVS holds their three year capital plan debate

With the rapid population increase that has been seen in Chestermere and surrounding area it is no surprise that the demand for more services and amenities be-comes increasingly noticed as well This is very much the case with Chestermere and area schools as when new schools are built in our area they are typically full or very close to full before they even open their doors But that pressure may be easing up when it comes to our schoolsRocky View School (RVS) Trustee Bev LaPeare shared

some very exciting news that should make both teachers and parents heave a sigh of relief RVS had their Capital Plan debate on Thursday March 17th and there are new schools for the areas of Chestermere and Langdon being requested for each of the 3 years ldquoSchool Authorities are required to submit a 3-year capital plan to Alberta Education by April 1 2016 How it works is all Boards in Alberta submit their requests by that date and the prov-ince first determines whatrsquos needed for health and safety reasons and those are allocated first After that they look at utilization programing needs and modernizations We are still waiting to hear about approvals from last yearrsquos Plan and we expect to hear something after the provin-cial budget announcement in Aprilrdquo explained LaPeare On the first year of the Capital Plan LaPeare is asking

for a new K-9 school in Chestermere to deal with the growing population there ldquoEast Lake School is quickly filling up and this new school would decant students

from Prairie Waters Rainbow Creek and Chestermere Lake Middle Schoolrdquo added LaPeare In year one it is also being asked for a replacement

school for Indus School ldquoIt was constructed in 1951 and is in need of modernization appropriate program spaces and upgraded mechanical systems that would all end up exceeding 75 of the replacement cost This would fall under the Governmentrsquos Small School by Necessity requestrdquo explained LaPeare In the second year of the Capital Plan they are request-

ing the build of the new Langdon High School La-

Peare explained saying ldquoWe (RVS) purchased a 45 acre section of land many years ago jointly with the county and wersquove been working together to plan the site in order to have a high school and a recreation center built on the land The county is responsible for the recreation com-ponent but there are lots of synergies to be had by jointly having it on the same piece of landrdquoWhat could be considered the biggest request in

this Capital Plan is a new high school ldquoWe are going to be asking the province for a new High School in Chestermere as a replacement school for the current Chestermere High School The entire Chestermere High School needs to be modernized to more appropriately meet the needs of student and mechanical systems need huge upgrades The cost of this is greater than 75 of the cost of a replacement school The two new high schools wonrsquot be built until therersquos sufficient student numbers to ensure adequate programing in both schools The way Langdon and Chestermere are growing though it sure wonrsquot take long We are also asking for another K-5 school in Langdon in year two of the Capital Planrdquo said LaPeare The final year of the three year plan will show the

request for another K-9 school in Chestermere as the growth there is expected to continue and wersquoll need another school by then to again try to accommodate students according to Trustee LaPeare ldquoIrsquom over the moon excited One more thing in rela-

tion to the Chestermere High School Replacement is that part of my debate to get it on the plan was about student safety Getting the school off of the 791 will eliminate the need for our young drivers as well as staff and parents to be navigating that turn onto the number 1 highwayrdquo
