FROM THE PRESIDENT

Happy New Year to all members and their families. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and happy holiday season. Looking back on 2015 the club had a very good year with interesting programs. We had a great Christmas dinner in December with over 50 people in attendance. A special thanks to Marilyn and Nancy for running this activity. Fun was had by all. I am looking forward to active times in 2016. Hopefully we can have more runs this year. Again for this year Dave Shingle is spearheading the car show. Let's all pitch in and give him our support for another successful event. Speaking of volunteering, we need more members to step forward and help with club activities. Just coming to the meetings, sitting and eating isn't enough. We all need to be active to have a successful club. Hope to see many of you at the January meeting. Fred Gaines, President CCACC

JANUARY PROGRAM – “WHAT - ZIT????”

Stump the Members – Bring a “What-Zit” (does not have to be auto related) but can be, for the members to guess. For the automotively- challenged folks in the audience, bring anything you think may be a special item to guess on. Dig in the basement or the garage, you must have something to stump the members. This can be a fun evening. If anyone can be the official photographer for the event, perhaps we can include pictures in the February News and Views. Thanks from the Program Chair, Pat Gaines

COVER CAR - 1963 BUICK RIVIERA

In the summer of 1963 while vacationing in Atlantic City with my family, I came to admire a car that I knew I would want later in life. Each year General Motors showcased their new automobiles in a display on Steel Pier. When I sat in the driver’s seat of the NEW 1963 Buick Riviera I felt like a pilot in the cockpit of a jet. This car had unique lines, designs and styling which were ahead of their time and still look great today.

Being one of General Motors' most striking post-war designs, this new personal luxury car began as a tribute to the La Salle brand, spearheaded by a pair of miniature La Salle grilles on the front of the fenders. The car was originally dubbed "La Salle II." The new Riviera’s target was Ford's full-figured, but still-sporty and very successful, Thunderbird. The car was intended as General Motors' answer to the Thunderbird and was priced about $80 less, but the buyer got so much more.

The plan from the beginning was to build 40,000 cars a year, which Buick did in 1963. The Riviera is equipped with Buick’s 401 c.i. Nailhead Wildcat 445 engine which produces 325 hp. It features a high level of standard equipment, which includes a V-8 engine, automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, front and rear bucket seats with soft vinyl upholstery, full wheel covers, carpeting, a fully lined trunk, and much more. Cost New - $4,333.

I purchased this car in late August, 2015 after my brother and I drove halfway between Erie and Buffalo to a town along Lake Erie called Fredonia, NY. I had asked my brother to help do something with me and he replied “What Now!”. Hopeann proclaimed that the new name of the car.

CCACC HOLIDAY BANQUET The Annual Holiday Banquet was held at the Sheraton Great Valley on Sunday, December 6, 2015. The gathering prior to dinner gave everyone a chance to meet and socialize while enjoying scrumptious coconut shrimp, Teriyaki meatballs, along with a wonderful cheese and fruit tray. President, Fred Gaines welcomed everyone. Pat Gaines was kind enough to give the invocation. The dinner menu was a cream of mushroom soup followed by New York strip steak, chicken breast with an apricot/madeira sauce or glazed salmon. The finish to the delicious meal was either a tasty apple dessert topped with cinnamon ice cream, or a pumpkin cheesecake and cinnamon ice cream. Chairpersons, Bud and Lisa Tarr presented membership awards. Starting with 5-year awards on up. Hugh Purnell gave out CCACC Awards to those winners who were present. Sincere congratulations to all of our award winners.

All seem to appreciate the varied donated door prizes from the gift certificate for dinner at the Sheraton Hotel to the pocket calendars from CCACC.

A great big thank you goes out to each one of you who donated so many fantastic door prizes. Through the efforts of all who helped with the Car Show to make a wonderful profit, the club was able to subsidize the banquet and keep the price low. For this we are grateful. We sincerely would like to wish you a Happy and Healthy New Year.

FROM HUGH – DO YOU REMEMBER ?? The Burma Shave signs pop up now and then. I recall the sayings – the signs kept you awake on a long drive along Rte. 66 to CA. For those who never saw any of the Burma Shave signs, here is a quick lesson in our history of the 1930s and 1940s. Before there were interstates, when everyone drove the old 2 lane roads, Burma Shave signs would be posted all over the countryside in farmers' fields. They were small red signs with white letters. Five signs, about 100 feet apart, each contained 1 line of a 4-line couplet . . . and the obligatory 5th sign advertising Burma Shave, a popular shaving cream. DON'T STICK YOUR ELBOW DROVE TOO LONG OUT SO FAR DRIVER SNOOZING IT MAY GO HOME WHAT HAPPENED NEXT IN ANOTHER CAR. PUNS FROM HUGH

A clear conscience is the sign of a bad memory. I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure. Nostalgia isn't what it used to be. Nor is there any future in it. Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine. Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in your garage makes you a car. Finally: I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it’s getting harder and harder for me to find one now. And my personal favorite: I am not arguing with you, I am explaining why you are wrong!
