RSPCA Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre
Swan Report 2020 The number of swans admitted at the centre was fairly similar to the previous year with a total of 371 admitted in 2020. The number of swans admitted from Cheshire was down again with just 74 admitted, compared to 79 in 2019. Staffordshire was the second most common county with 52 admissions seen this year. This year fishing litter has been an increasing problem. When broken line is left in the water or on the river bank it then causes serious injury or even death for our waterfowl. In 2020 we had one of our resident swans from Queens Park, Crewe that came in with a common line injury we call a ‘chinstrap’. This injury is exactly as it sounds the line gets caught around the lower beak and without removal can result in the loss of the lower beak. Fortunately this individual was caught up by one of the ‘Friends of Queens Park’ who constantly monitor the waterfowl for any injuries or disease. This time the swan had been caught early and luckily we were able to remove the line from the lower beak and after a couple of weeks recuperating on our pools it was returned to it’s mate. So please remember if you are ever out fishing or see discarded fishing tackle, collect it up and dispose of in the correct manor. We even have a fishing litter bin here at Stapeley for people to discard of their rubbish and we can dispose of it correctly. The centre is always looking for more release sites for cygnets, if you have a large body of water with an island and access for grazing then please email: [email protected] As always, we would like to thank David Cookson for all his help over the last year and for the ringing he has done here at Stapeley. We would also like to say a big thank you to all the other organisations and individuals, who have helped in the rescue and release of the swans that have been in the care of the centre over the past 12 months. 2019 RAS Results
RAS Project 367: Cheshire - Mute Swan Thank you for undertaking a Retrapping Adults for Survival project, helping us to better understand the causes of population change. The results of your study are presented here, alongside the latest national trend for comparison. National survival trends are published as part of the BirdTrends report (www.bto.org/birdtrends) and on the RAS website (www.bto.org/ras-results).
Your Project Trend
National Trend
Summary Results
Estimate of average adult survival across all projects:
Male annual adult survival rate: 70% Female annual adult survival rate: 75%
Estimate of average adult survival from your project:
Male annual adult survival rate: 54% Female annual adult survival rate: 55%
Estimate of your average annual recapture probability:
Male recapture probability: 68% Female recapture probability: 74%
Trend Analysis
Yours is one of four active projects for Mute Swan. The national trend is generated from four current projects. The quality of the national trend is considered to be ‘Moderate’ and the long-term trend is stable, which is the same for the BBS trend. The mean survival rates for Mute Swan are 70% for males and 75% for females. The mean re-encounter rates are higher for females than males.
The survival of your birds is somewhat lower than the national average and has dropped three years in succession since the high point of 2015. The confidence limits are quite good, so this drop looks to be accurate and the trend in 2015 looks similar to the national average.
Notes
* You may have noticed the graphs end at 2018; this is because the RAS programmes calculate survival between years, so the last point is the survival from 2018 to 2019.
* The graphs show “Apparent Adult Survival”, defined as the probability that an adult bird alive in the previous year survives and returns to the study area. The analysis accounts for the fact that birds which are present may not be seen every season, but birds permanently emigrating from the study area will be presumed dead, thus the true survival rate may be slightly higher than the figures presented here.
* The dotted lines show the upper and lower 95% confidence limits around the average estimate (solid line and points). The closer these lines are to the solid line, the more confidence we have in the accuracy of the survival rates.
Thank you for your continued support for RAS
RAS is supported by a partnership between the BTO and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) on behalf of the country agencies (Natural England, Natural Resources Wales, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, Northern Ireland). It is also part of the BTO Ringing Scheme which is funded by the BTO/JNCC Partnership, The National Parks and Wildlife Service (Ireland) and the ringers themselves.
