President’s Letter
Dear CVCA Friends: It’s been a great summer for driving, hasn’t it? By the number of competitor entries at the recent Lorenzo Driving Competition, it looks like our sport is going strong! If you didn’t make it to the show, let me tell you that it was heartening to see so many whips competing. Many thanks to the Lorenzo Show Committee for trying a number of new things at this year’s show. The Combined Test that was offered on Friday was so popular that competitors had to be turned away! And setting specific start times on the Sunday Pleasure Pace was very helpful. Sure, there were some glitches, but mostly the show really stepped up its game! BTW- the show can always use volunteers before, after, and during the competition. Volunteer! I’d like to thank the CVCA members who staffed the CVCA booth at the show: Bobbi Beckhorn, Dorothy Marsh, Sue Smith, and Janet Hazard-Gardner. These fine folks reeled in five new or returning members! THANK YOU! And, welcome to the new /returning members: Amy Franklin, Laurie Luce, Andreah Lytle, Deborah North, and Joyce Northrup. I hope to see you at the next CVCA event! Our next two events, in August and September are our beloved pleasure drives at Sheffield Farms in Ithaca and Chantry in Nelson. Check out the full details in this newsletter. Don’t forget to peruse our website and Facebook page from time to time. Photos that are too numerous to put in the newsletter are stashed there, as is our calendar of events. In addition to photos, our website houses back issues of our newsletter, Hitching Up, CVCA club By-Laws, Membership info and our lending library book and DVD titles. Be Safe and Drive On! Carol
PS- Our next newsletter will come out in late September 2018….

On Sunday February 25, 30 members and guests attended an equine limb anatomy lecture given by Carol Buckhout, professor at Cazenovia College, (and CVCA member). The event was held at the Cazenovia College Equine Education Center.
Following conversation and breakfast treats, everyone headed to the classroom for the first part of the day’s activities. The program began with a welcome by Ms. Barbara Lindberg, Cazenovia College Equine Studies director. Ms. Buckhout began her presentation using handouts detailing equine fore and hind limb anatomy. She discussed the limb structures: bones, ligaments and tendons. She discussed conformation of the horse as it relates to the bones, and how the horse’s conformation affects performance.
Following the lecture, everyone went to the lobby of the equine education center, where four anatomy stations were set up with cadaver specimens of both front and hind legs, including cut cross sections of the legs, hooves, and diagrammed specimens with tendons and ligaments highlighted.
Attendees went to each of the four stations at will to explore and handle the specimens, with the guidance of a current student enrolled in the Equine Studies program at Cazenovia College. Following this portion of the seminar, everyone again enjoyed light refreshments before heading to the indoor arena for live action demonstrations.
On each horse, the Cazenovia students had painted the bones, tendons, and ligaments on both front and hind limbs. At each horse station, there were boxes of the bones that make up both the front and hind limbs of the horse. Participants had the chance to handle equine limb bones, palpate the limbs on two of Cazenovia College’s horses and compare the structures. People “put together” the limbs to compare/check against the live horses’ limbs to see if they had “put together” the limb properly.
This event was a wonderful learning experience for all. Many thanks to Cazenovia College Equine Center for allowing the CVCA to hold this event at their facility. To Ms. Buckhout and her students: Abi Raymond, Lily Boyd, Jared Crost and Danielle Ricci for sharing their knowledge and time.

July Annual Summer Picnic and Membership Meeting SubmittedbySharonBaumPhotosbyJimSchoonmaker
This year the annual summer picnic was moved to a new date, July 15th, to avoid conflict with other carriage driving events. The weather was lovely and 20 CVCA members attended to enjoy good company, conversation and great food! Feedback on the date change is requested as attendance was down slightly from prior years. After mastering the grill, (tricky in and of itself), and cooking many hamburgers and hot dogs, I have a much greater appreciation for Kevin Davies and his years of fending off billowing clouds of smoke and flying grease spatters! Kevin, you ARE the grill master! The Robin Groves clinic was discussed during the membership meeting and clinic attendees expressed enthusiasm for Robin’s teaching style. A novice clinic for next year was also mentioned and members were interested in pursuing this. Other clinic ideas were briefly discussed, and members were asked to please send suggestions for 2019 clinicians to any one of the board members. Yes, we are already booking for 2019! Did you vote in the recent newsletter-naming contest? Three finalists were announced; The Driving Lines, CVCA News in Hand and CVCA Traces of News. Please get your votes in to Judy Sobczak to help pick the lucky winner! Also, don’t forget to get your entries in for this year’s fundraiser of a driving quarter sheet. See Sharon Baum to view a mini/small pony size version, there is still plenty of opportunities to get your tickets at remaining CVCA events this year.

July Annual Summer Picnic and Membership Meeting
Additional lively conversation ensued related to the pleasure drive guidelines and suggestions were well received. Last, but certainly not least, vacancies on the board and open seats for club President, Secretary and Treasurer positions were announced. Members are encouraged to make nominations or contact the board if interested in any of these positions. Voting will occur at the November Membership Meeting. Hope to see you all there!
