MAY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: (LOA’s are provided within 5 days; these are open to ALL active duty service members, dependents, DoD! Transportation provided to active duty, with the priority given to single/unaccompanied active duty service members).

Special Olympics Spring Games (5/4). We’re looking for a TON of volunteers to help out our Special Athletes during this fun field meet!! Please meet at the Roadhouse at 0745. We’ll return around 1330. Lunch and beverages will be provided. Chicod Elementary Field and Track Event (5/19). Help out our local students during their awesome field meet activities! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0600. Will return around 1800. The most amazing food you’ve ever had and drinks included! Clean Sweep (5/6 POV only). Help clean our local parks in Craven County! POV Only – Meet at Lawson Creek Park at 0900). Semper Fit Color Run (5/13). Assist with this awesome race! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0845; will be completed around 1200. Havelock Middle School Proctoring (TBA). Assist our local middle school with proctoring! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0700. Will return around 1200, each day. Appropriate civilian attire. Veterans Organic Garden and VFW Pig Picking Partnership (5/6). Volunteer to assist the Veterans Organic Garden partnership with the VFW. Assist with this special event. Lunch included. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0900; will return at around 1430. Autocross (5/20 and 5/21. Assist with set-up, tear down, course operations, event monitoring (and you will get to ride with SCCA instructors). May 20 (0630-15) and/or May (0630-1730). Reenactment on the USS North Carolina Volunteering (5/18 – 5/21). This is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with the United States Marine Corps Historical Society! We are looking for a select few Marines to participate in a five-day reenactment aboard the USS North Carolina in Wilmington. Marines will be outfitted in WWII uniforms, eat and lodge aboard the ship, and interact with the public and the ORIGINAL crew of the USS North Carolina, the highest decorated battleship in WWII. Marines will be also able to learn about and participate in the amazing history of Marine Corps Heritage in WWII. Please see/email Jen Merlo ([email protected]) to sign up and for details on Command Endorsement requirements. Transportation provided by SMP, and all meals/lodging provided. Only 12 spots available. American Red Cross Smoke Alarm Installation (5/20). Assist the American Red Cross and New Bern Fire Department with installing 100 smoke alarms in our local New Bern community! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0730; will return at 1530. Ft Macon Beach Clean-Up (5/26). Assist with cleaning up Ft. Macon Beach and Trails! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0800; will return around 1500. Please bring sunscreen, closed toed shoes, hat, bagged lunch, and water source. Veteran’s Organic Garden Volunteering in New Bern (Saturdays 5/13 and 5/27 and Friday 5/19). We will be assisting the Veterans Employment Base Camp and Organic Gardens with a variety of construction and planting projects! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0800. Will return by 1230. Neuse River Senior Games (4/24 – 5/12). Volunteer and assist our Athletes at the Senior Games! Activities include: Bocce, football, softball, horseshoes, basketball, shuffleboard, cycling, croquet, track and field, corn hole and swimming. There are a variety of shifts and days available, so please see the SMP website for more information and to sign up. Camp Corral (5/6): Volunteer to help out our families with Fallen Heroes and Wounded Warriors. Food and beverages are included. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0700 (first shift; returns at 1330) OR 1300 (second shift; returns at 1900). Limited to four volunteers max. Havelock Boys and Girls Club (M – F). POV only. Volunteer with our local Boys and Girls Club! Assist with mentoring, tutoring, homework, coaching, and activities! Please contact the Boys and Girls Club at 252-444-5437 for additional details. A one-time $10 background check is required. Volunteer with a Veterans’ Retirement Community – Carteret House (every Monday): Bond with Veterans and swap stories at one of our local retirement communities. Attire is service uniform of the day please. Meet at the Roadhouse at 1700. Volunteer with Riverpoint Nursing Home (every Wednesday): Volunteer with our seniors! Attire is service uniform of the day please. Meet at the Roadhouse at 1700. Animal Shelter (every Saturday): Volunteer at the Carteret County Animal Rescue from 0800-1200. Assist with walking the dogs, meeting with potential adopters, special projects, and cleaning. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0700. WWII Museum Restoration (on-going M—S; works around your schedule). Love cool history? Want to help save our WWII history?!! Learn how to restore some of the coolest artifacts and VEHICLES from WWII at the Newport WWII Museum. POV only; please contact Frank at [email protected] to set up a time to volunteer! MAY SPECIAL EVENTS:

UFC FIGHT NIGHT (5/13) UFC 211 – Heavyweight Title Fight. Miocic vs Dos Santos, Jedrzejczk vs Andrade, Maia vs Masvidal, Edgar vs Rodriguez, and many more!! Prelims kick-off at 2000; Main fight starts at 2200. Free! SMP Council Meeting (5/18 at 1430 at the Roadhouse): ALL ARE WELCOME!!! SMP is YOUR program, so come fill us in on your recreation ideas, volunteering ideas, and QOL initiatives. Kentucky Derby Party (5/6). Have a blast watching the 141st Annual Kentucky Derby! Kicks off at 1600! Come dressed in your favorite preppy attire and don’t forget your hat! Prizes will be awarded for two most festive dressers Race may only last two minutes, but the party will last all night! Cinco De Mayo Party (5/5) FREE SNACKS AND DRINKS!!! Join SMP at the Roadhouse to celebrate Cinco De Mayo!! We will also have free snacks and drinks, while supplies last. Party kicks off at 1930! Fishing Seminar (5/11). Learn from the local experts on fishing techniques, resources, locations, and strategies! For beginners or avid anglers. 11 May from 1700 – 2000 at T&E Building, room 171. To register, call 252-466-8413. Autocross (5/20 – 5/21). Pre-registration required online at www.motorsportsreg.com by midnight 5/14. Authorized patrons can also register day of, with a $10 late fee. OPEN TO ALL (military, retired, dependents, DoD, and properly vetted civilians). Volunteer opportunities available both days. Active Duty/SCCA Members: $30/one day or $50/ for two days. Non-SCCA members or Non-active duty: $40/one day or $70/two days (includes SCCA membership).

SUPER VILLAIN VS SUPER HERO WEEK (15 MAY – 20 MAY):

Super Villain Movie Festival (5/15): Enjoy your favorite hero and villain movies ALL DAY and NIGHT!! Volleyball Competition (5/17 at 1800). Turn up the heat and get your Super Workout on during a killer twist on this classic game! Super Villain and Hero drawing workshop (5/17 at 1900). Learn how to draw your favorite Super Hero or Villain cartoons …. Classics and new favorites ;) Villain vs Hero Party and FOOD (5/18 at 1930): Rock Thursday night with SMP’s Super Villain vs Super Hero Party!! Free pizza, wings, root beer floats, and drinks while supplies last. Prizes will be awarded for best super hero and villain costumes. See you there!

MAY WEEKLY EVENTS:

Mondays! Pub pong from 1800-2000! The winning team (2 players) will win a 14” pizza. Tuesdays and Thursdays! Poker and Cigar Night at 1930. Cards Against Humanity at 2030. Basketball at 1830. Gamer Tourney at 2000. Wednesdays! Volleyball at 1900. Trivia Night from 1900-2100. There will be a new theme each week, and the wining team (4 members max) will win a large pizza. Fridays! Karaoke will start back 20 May from 2000-close. Bible Discussion Group! Every Tuesday at 1900 in the Roadhouse reading room. FREE SMP Golf Clinics (every Wednesday): Have fun while learning golf fundamentals or work on your existing technique! All range balls and equipment will be provided. Meet at the Roadhouse at 1645, or directly at the Sound of Freedom Golf Course at 1700. Clinic is one hour.

SPECIAL TRIPS:

SMP Carolina Rebellion Concert and Camping Trip (5/4 - 5/7) $169. Includes 4 days of camping, 3 full days of concerts, special VIP Campground Concert on Thursday night, and transportation!! Show line-up includes performances by Seether, Chevelle, Avenge Sevenfold, Soundgarden, Korn, The Offspring, Three Days Grace, A Perfect Circle, Def Leppard, All That Remains, Skillet, Citizen Zero, Volbeat, Sum42, the Cult, Of Mice and Men, Taking Back Sunday, and MANY MORE!!! Registration and deposit of $100 required by 3 April; first registered/first served. If trying to make deposit after 3 April, please see the SMP website for availability, which will be noted. (This SMP trip will fill up fast and has sold out the last three years)! We're meeting at the Roadhouse at 1200 on Thursday (5/4) and will return on Monday morning (5/8) around 0300, depending on traffic. ( Please note that we WILL be staying through the last show on Sunday, so make plans accordingly). Please also note that you will need to bring a tent, sleeping bag, and pillow (not provided). Tents can be reserved on a first come/first served basis from Cherry Point Outdoor Connection. You can also request a Special Lib/PTAD request letter for your Command from the SMP Coordinator by emailing name, unit, and MOS to Jen Merlo at [email protected]. Oceana Pier Fishing Trip (5/21). $10. Join SMP for a day of pier fishing. The fishing is amazing right now! No fishing license required. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0700; we will return around 1500. $10 includes admission to pier; please bring your own bait! You must pre-register on our website by 5/17. We also have fishing gear available (free) for the first five single/unaccompanied active duty service members that register . Rod & Reel rental fees can be found on the following website: http://www.oceananapier.com/fishing-pier. NASCAR COCA-COLA 600 Trip and Pit Passes (5/28). $15. SMP will be taking a trip to the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte NC! Includes tickets, PIT PASSES, and transportation. ($15 is transportation fee). Lynard Skynard will be performing. Very limited space available! First paid/first served. If you are on a waitlist, please show up morning of and we will accommodate you if we are able! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0930; will be back to base AM of 5/29. Deep Sea Fishing Trip! (6/3) $2. Join SMP for an amazing day 50 miles out to Sea with Military Appreciation Day! Trip includes transportation, breakfast, lunch, dinner, beverages, all fishing gear and bait, boat charter, and a cooler to bring your catch back to base. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0345. Will return around 2000. Please bring sunscreen, hat, sweatshirt, and bonine/Dramamine. Even if you are on a waitlist, please show up at the Roadhouse day of; we will accommodate you if we’re able to! ($2 is transportation fee. Even if you are planning to POV, you must meet at the Roadhouse at 0345 morning of. You can register on the SMP website, but registration is not complete until your $2 is received at the MCCS Cash Office (building 400 or over the phone at 252-466-2980). First paid/first served. SMP and DEVIL DOG DARE (FREE!). SMP has received a number of spots for Devil Dog Dare, to include PAINTBALL. Two packages available! Includes the activities, lunch, and drinks at NO CHARGE to the Command/Marine/Sailor. Please contact Jen at [email protected] and Patty at [email protected] to reserve your group! Open on Fridays, and available Tuesdays and Thursdays. Advanced reservations required please.
