LOCATION

Cherry Point Estate Wines is located in the Village of Cobble Hill, which is known for its agricultural surroundings and namesake, Cobble Hill Mountain. The Village is approximately 14 km (9 miles) south of Duncan and 45 km (28 miles) north of Victoria in the Cowichan Valley Regional District.

The Cowichan Valley is on the south east side of Vancouver Island, which is a pastoral setting of rolling, green, fertile hills surrounded by rugged mountains and majestic softwood rainforests. The Mediterranean-like growing season and mild winters make it the most sought-after agricultural area on Vancouver Island and British Columbia’s newest wine-growing region.

DIRECTIONS

Approximately 15 minute drive heading south from Duncan, BC and 45 minute drive heading north from Victoria, BC. From Victoria, head north on Highway 1 toward Nanaimo to Cobble Hill, turn right on Fisher Road and follow the Wine Route signs to the vineyard.

DESCRIPTION

This award-winning vineyard and winery, situated on the south east side of Vancouver Island, includes 34 acres of gently sloping, cleared land, 24 acres of which are carefully tended with red and white grape varietals planted 25 years ago. The property also includes a 3,927 ft2 family home with a commercial kitchen, bistro restaurant, liquor licence, event pavilion, wine shop and tasting room, wine processing facilities, equipment and warehouses.

This property offers generous lawns and ample parking space.

Cherry Point Estate Wines is one of the largest vineyards on Vancouver Island, located a short drive away from Victoria, and is part of the Vancouver Island Wine Route. The vineyard is planted according to the different soil types, the specific climatic conditions and the proximity to the ocean. The main varietals include Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Ortega, Siegerrebe and Epicure in the white varieties and Zweigelt, Cabernet Libre, Pinot Noir, Agria and Castel in the reds.

Cherry Point is planted on a glacial moraine, a gravel and stony hill rich in minerals which progressively turn into sandy and clay structures. White round stones that lay exposed under the vines retain and reflect the sun’s heat and help to ripen the fruit long after the sun sets. The grapevines thrive in these soils and were trained to develop deep roots to search for underground water and nutrients. A large pond nearby catches the rain as it runs down the vineyard’s sloping hill and the mineral enriched

water is judiciously irrigated back onto the vines, if needed.

The healthy lush vines are carefully weeded, clipped and pruned, allowing for optimal sunlight exposure and fruit development. At harvest time, usually by the beginning of October, the grapes are handpicked, gently crushed, and the pressed juice begins the wine making process.

Only grapes from the vineyard are used to make wines at Cherry Point. Every year an important percentage of the grape production is sold to local wineries on the Island. Cherry Point currently produces approximately 4,000 cases of wine annually and most of the wine is sold at the farm store.

Cherry Point has won many awards in various competitions, including a Double Gold Medal at the All Canadian Wine Championship in Ontario for its Ortega, a Gold Medal at the Northwest Summit Competition in Oregon, USA, for its Cowichan Blackberry Dessert Wine and its Gewurztraminer received The Wild Card Recognition at the Osoyoos Oyster and Wine Competition.

These award-winning wines are made, following old European traditions, allowing the wines to stabilize and mature in old oak barrels. Cherry Point honors

the relationship between the earth, the sun and the dry wind that comes from the ocean that will nourish the vineyard, allowing for wines that reflect the character of the Farm.

In addition to the wines, Cherry Point is home to the world known Cowichan Blackberry Dessert Wine and its port style Solera dessert wine, now in its 14th year.

The bistro restaurant, with its stunning, handmade cherry wood door, can accommodate up to 90 people and includes an indoor pavilion with wood burning fireplace, garden brick patio and wine shop with tasting bar. The bistro is ideal for relaxed lunches, business meetings or social functions, offering a fantastic view of the vineyard! This is the site for memorable weddings every summer.

The beautiful garden patio, lower lawn and indoor pavilion dining room can accommodate larger groups and weddings, and the grounds offer amazing settings for pictures. The bistro is one of the estate’s strongest connections with the community.

The 3,927 ft2 family home has 3 bedrooms, 3 full bathrooms, dining room, living room and a commercial kitchen, which doubles as a kitchen for the bistro restaurant right next door. There are also 2 rooms currently being used as office space and the home could easily be converted into a B&B. In addition to the family home there is a registered, CSA approved 2 bedroom manufactured home located on the property which can be used as additional accommodation or rented out.

The current operators have done an amazing job making Cherry Point into an award winning vineyard. Cherry Point is waiting for someone to bring it into the 21st century as the production and marketing could be easily expanded. HISTORY

The vineyard was established in 1990 when the founders thoughtfully selected 34 acres a few miles south of Cowichan Bay. Since wine-growing was still new on Vancouver Island, they planted the vineyard with several grape varieties, as nobody really knew which grapes suited the island’s soil and climate. After 4 years of grape trials, the vineyard opened as one of the first licensed wineries on Vancouver Island.

RECREATION

Cobble Hill is filled with recreation, historical sites, shops and galleries. Every August an old fashioned country fair is held at the Cobble Hill Fair Grounds with livestock and agricultural displays and family entertainment. You can also experience breathtaking views by climbing the village’s namesake, Cobble Hill Mountain, in the Quarry Regional Wilderness Park.

The Arbutus Ridge Golf Club is a challenging par 71, 18-hole golf course and there are two golf courses nearby in Duncan. Enjoy family outings at the Cherry Point Nature Observation Park, which offers fabulous ocean views of Satellite Channel and Salt Spring Island. After enjoying a horseback ride along the hills and countryside, you can kick your shoes off and walk on the long sandy beaches nearby.

Last, but not least, is the fabulous Vancouver Island Wine Tours, which begins in early spring until the end of harvest time in the fall. You can start the tour just north of Victoria at the Merridale Estate Cidery and end it at the Cherry Point Estate Wines in Cobble Hill. Afterwards, you can enjoy a bite to eat and beverage at the Cherry Point Bistro!
