SEPTEMBER 2017

CHEMTECH will organize the next edition of SOP in Ahmedabad concurrently during CHEMTECH Gujarat World Expo 2018 from January 23-25, 2018

in Gujarat University Exhibition Hall, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. CHEMTECH plans to organize the event every year to create stronger engagement between the industry and the students through Icon Lectures, Competitions and Internship Program.

Mr. A M Tiwari chaired the 1st advisory board meeting in Vadodara for detailing of program. Mr. Tiwari expressed that the biggest concern that the industry is facing

is the dearth of good fresh engineers which is due to lack of exposure to the real industry. He suggested that in addition to inviting leaders from the industry to share the success stories and experiences, it would be a good idea to have technical experts who can offer the students insights into the changing trends and emerging trends that would directly or indirectly impact the industry and thus the careers in the long run. The members of the board identified Digitization, Artificial Intelligence; 3-D printing; Virtual Reality as some of the key trends that could be of interest to the students.

Mr. Tiwari also suggested that for the poster & prototype competition, students

Mr K K Jain, Executive Director – (PC-Project), Co-BD, IOCL in Mumbai chaired the first advisory

board meeting to design the conference program for the next edition of refining & petrochemicals conference scheduled to be organised concurrently during Oil & Gas World

Expo 2018 in Navi Mumbai. Mr Jain kicked off the meeting with low down on the burgeoning growth of the Indian refining industry saying, “The last financial year has been one of the best years for the refiners as they have booked huge profits which may increase further given the fact that the crude oil prices may continue to stay low in the near future.”

While low oil prices & growing domestic demand of petrochemicals will continue to maintain the strong

positive momentum over the next couple of years, the disruptive innovations in automobile and energy sectors are compelling the refiners to go back to the drawing board and think of strategies to continue being profitable in the long term. The petrochemical imports stood at Rs. 50,000 crores last year which is expected to double up by 2025. The

surplus petrochemicals production is reducing due to consistent increase in demand which has deemed the necessity of bringing in new capacities. In the years to come the petrochemicals sector will continue to show phenomenal growth and provide ample opportunities. The Government is providing lot of thrust to develop the domestic petrochemical manufacturing industry in order to minimize the imports through Make in India campaign and the planned

Mega Refinery project on the west coast under the aegis of Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas which will be a consortium of PSUs – IOCL, BPCL & HPCL with EIL as project management consultant is one such step in this direction.

More than 20 leaders attended the board meeting in Mumbai and have identified the : Energy, R&D, Advancements in refining industry, Investment opportunities, Project management including EPC, LEPC, and EPCM, Challenges for refiners: EVs, UCG, Renewables, Bioethanol, Hydrogen Fuel, Biogas & Agri residue etc, Skill development, Infrastructure & Logistics, Technology & Innovation as some of the key areas to focus upon for the conference and having a panel discussion on the impact of GST on the refining & petrochemicals industry.

The board has unanimously proposed the name of Mr P D Samudra, MD & CEO, TKIS – India as the Technical Chairman for the conference.

• In 2016-17, Rs. 55,000 crores worth of petrochemicals products were imported and by 2025, this is going to become more than double.

• Gasoline has grown at around 8% and petrochemicals growth has maintained an average of around 9 %.

Mr Pravir Pandey (IA & AS), Vice Chairman, IWAI & Chairman SMP World Expo 2018 hosted the first central advisory board meeting in New Delhi to

structure the program for conference on inland waterways. Mr Pandey noted that the time was right to organise the conference on development of inland waterways since the government is implementing the Jal Vikas Marg plan with the World Bank for Capacity augmentation of inland waterways in the country to enable movement of vessels to move up to 2,000 tonnes which will incur environmental as well as major socio economic benefits.

He shared that presently the government is developing 9 inland waterways across Ganga, Brahmaputra, Krishna & Godavari,

Mandovi, Zuari and Kamatva, Gandak, Rupnarayan and each of the rivers has its own characteristics and every project has different set of challenges. The Government has already allocated Rs 5400 crores for the projects and in July 2017 the government has awarded projects worth Rs. 2000 crores with all the statutory clearances in place.

Mr Pandey apprised the members of the board that the government is investing huge amount of money in building infrastructure, creating intellectual property, designing of the vessels etc. and shared that IWAI has been working with world class consultants for the projects and trying to bring the international best practices in India which will bring a paradigm shift in Indian transport sector.

He suggested Model Shift as the central

theme for the conference and focus on Inland Waterway I which is being developed from Varanasi to Haldia and having in-depth discussion on the relevant dimensions. He also shared that IWAI already has National Dredging I plan of around Rs. 2000 crore in place and is already in talks with the relevant companies and CHEMTECH platform would provide a good opportunity to engage with various stakeholders.

During the course of discussion, the panel narrowed down on barge operations, navigability, passenger cruises, multimodal logistics parks, cargo handling, vessel design, environmental issues as the sub themes that could be covered during the conference.

Mr Pandey shared that Mr Harry Williams is renowned expert in traffic handling and heads Astra Rotterdam, which is one of the largest training centers for inland waterways has agreed to speak during the conference.

MrHHPandyahoststhe1stCABmeetingofIAC&PVFWorldExpo2018inVadodara

The members of the board for IAC & PVF World Expo 2018 attended the 1st CAB meeting to outline the structure of program for both the conferences under the Chairmanship of Mr H H Pandya, Director Projects & Senior Vice President,

Deepak Phenolics Ltd in Vadodara. Mr K B Walvekar , Head Procurement and Mr Bharat Shah, GM- Instrumentation, Deepak Phenolics Ltd will steer the

technical committees for PVF and IAC conferences respectively to structure the conference programs .

Mr Pandya expressed that content for both the technical conferences on Industry Automation & Control (IAC) and Pumps Valves & Fittings (PVF) should be all inclusive and engage various stakeholders right from end

users to vendors & EPC players.

Mr Walvekar noted that the ndian industry has sustained through VUCA and now the government is also providing much needed push to the development, lot of funds will be unlocked in the due course which will provide ample opportunities to the industry. He added that the Indian valve manufacturing industry comprises of large and many small players who are scattered all over the country, this industry is likely to see lot of consolidation in the future. While

the industry targets to increase the share in the global manufacturing to USD 5 billion by 2020 but there is a long way to go since Chinese manufacturers enjoy the economies of scale and are highly cost competitive. The project owners are highly dependent on the suppliers of products and face many challenges related to procure the same for timely deliveries due to

dearth of suppliers. He appreciated CHEMTECH for bringing flagship event to Gujarat since the state hosts many manufacturers as well as end users who would be immensely benefitted by the event.

Mr Shah suggested since industry is moving faster towards setting up automated plants, the theme of IAC conference around Smart Plants could cover trends of advanced instrumentation, wireless control, artificial intelligence, cloud computing etc. that are of high relevance for the industry.

Mr P N Parikh a veteran in the field of automation and member of CAB suggested having focused session on Safety both in IAC & PVF conferences since this is widely overlooked by many manufacturers.

The board has proposed having common inauguration of automation and pumps valves & fittings conference and later separate focused sessions for both the verticals. The last edition of IAC and PVF conference accorded good presence of experts in operations, maintenance and safety divisions from wide array of end user industries. The date for the 2nd board meeting will be announced shortly.

Mr. H. H. Pandya Director Projects & Senior Vice President, Deepak Phenolics Ltd, shares a light moment with the CAB Members at the Industry Automation and Control World Expo 2018 first CAB meeting.
