New thiophene- and selenophene-fused aromatic compounds were successfully developed as high-performance semicon-ducting materials for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). Among them, the most advanced compounds designed onconsideration of structure–function relationship showed durable air-stable FET performance. This article highlights theresearch strategy and development of these superior compounds as well as the molecular factors for the improvement ofmobility, sensitivity, and stability, which are very informative for the design of practical semiconductors.

Strong pyrene excimer fluorescence is observed in the SAM derived from disulfide-functionalized bis-pyrene derivative on gold surface at the pyrene surface coverage similar tothat exhibits only weak monomer fluorescence in the SAM derived from disulfide-functinalizedmonopyrene derivative. The pyrene excimer is less sensitive to the quenching by gold substratethan pyrene monomer excited state. The photocurrent generates from the excimer emissiveSAM more effectively than the monomer emissive SAM.

686 Micropatterned Film of Silica-coated GoldNanoparticles Formed by Covalent Bonds

Monodisperse gold nanoparticles coated with silica shells (Au@SiO2) were prepared byvortex mixing instead of magnetic stirring. With well-established surface-chemicalproperty, the Au@SiO2 nanoparticles were functionalized with the silane reagent 3-gylcidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTS). Then, these epoxy-terminated Au@SiO2

nanoparticles could be easily assembled onto the silicon surface, which had been patternedwith 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) SAMs and octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) SAMsalternately, by covalent bonding to form close packed two-dimensional nanoparticle arrays.
