LABORATORY POLICIES FOR CHEMISTRY 106 AND 108INTRODUCTORY CHEMISTRY

Laboratory AttendanceStudents are responsible to attend all laboratory sessions. Each laboratory report and verification ofcompletion of the laboratory activity constitutes 100 points.

Laboratory GradesLaboratoryiIlstructors(Teaching.As~i~ts, TAs)will assigngradesbasedonthe followingpointvalues.

There is no opportunity to "make up" a laboratory session or a quiz. Failure to attend two or morelaboratory sessions means an "F" in the course, regardless of the number of points the student has. It isimportant that all students arrive on time, since the pre-lab quiz is given promptly, and the procedures forthe day are discussed. Students who are late may not enter the lab and will be absent for that day. Muchof the laboratory grade is associated with productive teamwork in your group so that the TAs will belooking for this type of collaboration. It is, therefore, very important that each student be prepared foreach session.

Grades are determined as a percentage: 90%-100% is A; 80%-89% is B; 70%-79% is C; 60%-69% is D.

Laboratory Conduct and BehaviorYour laboratory manual outlines the general procedures for working in the laboratory on pages 1 and 2. Itis your responsibility to read and understand these. Rwes for laboratory behavior-are also posted in eachlaboratory.Forthe safetyof all, studentsmustabideby theseru1esandanystudentnot doing-so willbeasked to leave the laboratory, receiving a zero for the day's laboratory work.

The Laboratory InstructorThe laboratory instructor, also known as the TA or Teaching Assistant, is the instructor responsible forteaching of the laboratory session. It is the role of each student to know and adhere to the policies fortheir section, to be prepared and to submit their work as required by the laboratory instructor.

Any questions may be directed to Dr. Borgford, Assistant Professor and Laboratory Coordinator forChemistry 106 and 108.

LABORATORY ATTENDANCE POLICY

CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENTUNIVERSITY OF ALABAMAAT BIRMINGHAM

You are responsible to attend each laboratory session for which you are registered.

At times a student may have a valid, verifiable reason for missing a laboratory session. Ifyou can document an absence you may be ~ted a_one-timeexcused absence at thediscretion of the Laboratory Teaching Assistant for your course. In order to apply for aD.excused absence you must document the absence in two ways:

--

1. An e-mail message to the Teaching Assistant that includes the following.

"

a. Your nameb. The lab course and section codec. The date lab was missed

d. Reason for requesting the excused absence

2. A copy of the appropriate verification submitted to your Teaching Assistant assoon as is practical. It would be a good idea to attach a copy of the e-mailmessage you have sent. Be sure your name and lab section, at least, are attached.

Please remember that it is possible to grant one excused absence for you. If a studentmisses two lab sessions the student will need to retake the laboratory course.

Questions about this policy may be directed to the Laboratory Coordinator for CH 106and CH 108 Dr. Christie Borgford
