WeLCoMe to tHe HSBC CHeLtenHAM JAZZ FeStIVAL 2008!Jazz in all its moods can be found at this year’s HSBC Cheltenham Jazz Festival... We have jazz legends and young guns, club nights and jazz standards, big bands and soloists, from funk to fusion, Latin to soul, hip-hop and… the experience is yours to choose. For seven days and nights Cheltenham will swing its hips to the greatest performers in jazz today. The incomparable Eartha Kitt drops by for her only UK appearance. Cleo Laine and John Dankworth celebrate their 80th birthdays with some classic jazz standards. Jools Holland front woman Ruby Turner offers her inimitable signature of soul and when you’re ready to groove, Imelda May dares you to resist.

Take a journey with Courtney Pine inspired by the virtuoso Sidney Bechet, then discover the legends of the future with our Jerwood Jazz Generation featuring Soweto Kinch, saxophone ace Iain Ballamy and post-punk band leader Pete Wareham.

Exclusive UK performances by guitar artist Bill Frisell and drum legend Jack DeJohnette are not to be missed. Van Morrison, with his new album, will leave you on a blues induced high. Coming down, opt for a little Billie Holiday performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra or the blissful intimacy of Gwyneth Herbert.

Funkster Maceo Parker shakes the chandeliers at the Town Hall with special guest Dennis Rollins, while star of the club scene Gilles Peterson brings Jose James, Elan Mehler and Tawiah to town. If you can dance the distance Mr Scruff ‘keeps it unreal’ for 270 minutes!

If that isn’t enough, ex-Buena Vista frontman Roberto Fonseca serves up his own brand of Cuban groove and DJ Nicola Conte joins the BBC Big Band for Bossa Nova with a contemporary twist. With free music at the Budvar Jazz Marquee over the Bank Holiday weekend, eclectic Fringe events, Sunday’s Family Breakfast show, schools’ concerts and masterclasses, there really is something for everyone.

Combining musicians from Gloucestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra and Colwell Arts Jazz Ensemble, the Jazz Live Big Band is an ensemble featuring Gloucestershire’s best new jazz talent. The Band performs music by a number of contemporary swing composers including Jim Martin, Wynton Marsalis and Frank Mantooth.

Tales of the Towerblock revealed Soweto Kinch as both a brilliant MC and saxophonist, exploring the interface between jazz and hip-hop music culture. Tonight, in one of the first opportunities to hear Part 2: Basement Fables – Kinch continues to break new ground in the evolution of contemporary urban jazz. With a line-up including Femi Temowo on guitar and Neil Charles on bass, this is an event not to be missed.

Join us on a journey of jazz beats and orchestral splashes as the Heritage Orchestra joins forces with DJ Bonobo to bring us the music of legendary Brazilian DJ Amon Tobin. The 45-piece symphony orchestra, featuring rhythm section and jazz soloists, combine their mix of jazz, classical, fun and cross-genre dance forms with Bonobo’s mix of hip-hop, broken beats, latin, funk and soul. HSBC Cheltenham Jazz Festival has joined forces with Cheltenham Science Festival and a team of scientists from across Europe to conduct research into your brain’s interpretation of ‘relative pitch’.

All ages and musical abilities are very welcome. The experiment will take approximately half an hour.

The Jerwood Jazz Generation series is the result of a long-standing partnership between the Cheltenham Jazz Festival and the Jerwood Charitable Foundation to nurture the British jazz legends of the future. Since 2002 the scheme has backed more than 50 young British artists and the list reads like a who’s who of jazz musicians who are going places fast. They come to Cheltenham to premiere a new commission, launch a new band or for a valuable second outing of a new project.

on tHe FrInGeThis year the Fringe returns with lots more free events for you to discover throughout the main festival weekend. Hosted in local pubs, restaurants and in our Budvar Jazz Marquee, the Fringe will be showcasing a variety of up and coming local bands, and is the perfect way to relax and soak up the festival vibe. As part of the Fringe programme, the University of Gloucester will be hosting a Big Band Extravaganza – from swing to strings to free jazz and beyond. There will be an open improvisation workshop and a chance to participate in a performance of music dedicated to the great Sun Ra. All musicians, and instrument or voice, of any ability, are welcome.

Start times are approximate and most gigs are free and do not require a ticket but please check with the venue beforehand. The venues reserve the right to vary the advertised programme without notice and refuse admission.

Food & DrinkThe Town Hall buffet will be open throughout the day. A licensed bar is open for pre-concert and interval drinks, which we recommend you order in advance. The Budvar Jazz Marquee in Imperial Gardens will be open during the day for drinks and café snacks. Café Everyman and the County Bar, both at the Everyman Theatre will be serving refreshments during the festival. For more recommendations about where to eat and drink during the Festival, please ask at the Info Point.
