Sylvan Township residentJanice Carr was the firstto file the paperwork for arecount of the water andsewer debt millage thatpassed by a narrow seven-vote lead during the Aug. 7primary election in SylvanTownship.

Carr and several other resi-dents considered that victorymargin close enough to be amargin of error and want toput the Washtenaw CountyClerks office to work for asecond look.

Carr, a Sylvan residentand volunteer librarian atthe Chelsea District Library, was one of many residentswho wrote letters to the edi-tor for publish in the ChelseaStandard.

In her letter she took issuewith Sylvan Township Boardof Trustee Arlene Grau, whowas on the board while thetownships bond debt to thecounty occurred.

Grau wrote a letter to the

Standard where she com-pared the water and sewerdebt millage to what thetownship pays for member-ship to the Chelsea DistrictLibrary.

Sylvan Township resi-dents pay 0.8 mils to supportthe library, Carr explainedin her letter. The water/sewer bond debacle will costthe township more than $14million. The millage to repaythe county for these bondsmay range from 4.5 mils tosomething much higher ifdecided by a court judgment. The repayment period couldrange from 15 to 20 years.Compared to this, the library

millage is a minusculeamount. I, for one, realizemuch more than 0.8 mils invalue from using the library.

Carr and many otherresidents take issue withthe fact that they were notgiven a chance to vote onthe sewer and water facility.Instead, the township boardat the time and the formerTownship Supervisor JerryDresselhaus approved theproject.

Regardless of whether thetownship government actedon the publics best wishes, the primary election millagepassed by 480 to 473 votes, which were certified by the

    Board of Canvassers on Aug.14.

If the millage survives therecount, the 20-year millagewill recoup $13 million in

    DDA moves forward with plans

    for removing Daniels Showroom

    By Erica McClainHeritage Media

The DowntownDevelopment Authoritymade another step towardremoving the DanielsShowroom from the his-toric trio of connectedbuildings known as theLongworth at an Aug. 16meeting.

The motion, led by MarkHeydlauff, involves seek-ing solicitations of bids forremoving the showroom, capping the foundation ofthe building with cement

and securing all doorsand lower windows to thefront of the Mack building, which would be revealedwhen the connected show-room is demolished.

    Heydlauff said he would

like to see bids for the proj-ect due Sept. 15 consideringthe DDA has a meeting onSept. 20, and work shouldbe completed by Oct. 15.

Theres no reason thatthat cant happen thatquickly, he said.

He said getting theproject done this fall willgive the DDA the winter tospeak with developers andfigure out how to proceedwith the the faade of theMack.

Each DDA board memberat the meeting approvedgoing forward with seek-

ing bids for the demolition, although board membersPalmer Morrel-Samuelsand Patti Schwarz wereabsent.

Despite the decision, which has been three

years in the making sincethe DDA purchased theLongworth property for$400,000 in 2008, membersof Preservation Chelseaattended the meeting tovoice their discontent.

The Daniels Showroom, which was built in the50s, is the only buildingin Chelsea, accordingto Preservation Chelseamember Jan Bernath, thatrepresents the Art Modernearchitectural style. Thedesign style was highlight-ed at the Chicago WorldsFair in 1933 and included

a flat roof, a streamlinedappearance, rounded cor-ners, glass block windowsand wraparound windowsand aluminum trim.

    Despite the showroomsarchitectural value,

Bernath said she knowsthe building is in disrepairand has been for quite sometime.

I know that some peopleconsider it ugly, Bernathsaid. Thats an opinion.Thats just an opinion. It doesnt have to looklike this. It can be a finestanding example of ArtModerne, which will add toour notion of being a cityof the arts.

Heydlauff said thecondition of the DanielsShowroom is simply unbe-lievable.

It is deteriorating dras-tically, he said. I thinkwe need action. I thinkweve waited long enough.I think weve done a lot of
