THE LODGE

The brief for the Swinburne Professors Lodge required the creation of a space using only forty foot shipping containers that accommodated, 10 temporary residences, a library, a café, a book store, reception area, separate meeting rooms and a gallery.

The professor’s lodge that I have created is a modern, clean and comforting design with a lot of creative flair. Located in beautiful Hawthorne, this unique lodge showcases the latest design trends while creating a sense of tranquility and sophistication.

The project itself was created using design research techniques, sketching and model making. The final presentation comprised of drawings created in AutoCAD, Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. The purpose of the brief was to better understand the process of design and construction for a large-scale project.

4x4 HOUSEDesigned by architect Tadao Ando, the 4x4 House is situated on the Japanese coastline and offers wall-to-wall ocean views. The key focus of the architects design is the tiny 4x4m footprint and the use of in-situ concrete to build the structure. For this project I was required to research the construction process of a concrete structure including the development of hand drawing plans, elevations and sections. This project helped me to further develop my skills in hand drawing and Photoshop to create presentation drawings for clients.

CHAYAGASAKA Architect Tetsuo Kondo designed the house in Chayagasaka, Japan. It is an open plan space made up of many different levels to create a sense of privacy. For this project the brief was to recreate the design of the House in Chayagasaka using the programme Revit to draw plans, elevations and sections. I also used Revit to create internal and external renders of the design for presentation to a client, helping them to visualise the building.

CULTURAL HUBThe Multi-Faith Center project involved working with the existing exterior shell from the St Josephs Church in Collingwood, which burnt down in 1997, to design a multi-faith cultural hub. For this project I tried to pay homage to the original design by not removing any part of the existing exterior walls and instead trying to accentuate them and make them a feature in the new design. The design process for the Multi-Faith Center involved learning about the hierarchy of room sizes and positions, designing for accessibility and using different design techniques to encourage people into the space. For this project I used AutoCAD and SketchUp as well as InDesign.

The research process for the Multi-Faith Center involved a site analysis, making models, researching exisiting designs and creating storyboards of the flow of the design.

COOKING SCHOOLThe goal of the cooking school project was to design a functional and modern space utilizing the sixth floor and rooftop of the Swinburne Design School. The design brief asked us to consider sustainability, including the use of passive heating and cooling. To achieve this goal I conducted a full site analysis and incorporated water tanks, wind turbines, rain gardens and solar panels into the final design. In this project I used AutoCAD, Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGNI completed a Bachelor of Design at Swinburne University in 2014 (majoring in Interior Design and co-majoring in Industrial Design). This co-major has helped me to develop skills in ergonomics, conceptual drawing, and 3D modelling in SolidWorks. It has also helped me to advance my knowledge of construction and fabrication processes using heavy machinery as well as develop my holistic design skills, from conceptual stages right through to finished products. The industrial design course has taught me a great deal about the life cycle and sustainable elements of a product.

COFFEE TABLEThe brief was to design a coffee table in line with current trends and popular designs. The geometric style was chosen, as it stood out to me as innovative, creative and challenging. After sketching and model making I further developed the design in Solidworks. The design was then laser cut into 0.75mm sheet metal. Using the heavy machinery in the workshop I bent and welded the pieces together and the table was then powder coated. Designing and constructing this table was the culmination of all my skills and knowledge learned throughout my industrial design co-major and I am extremely proud of the results.
