Trustwide news Free acute oncology resources

Acute oncology is a new area of cancer medicine which focuses on the management of patients with complications of their cancer diagnosis and/or treatment as well as those with a new acute cancer diagnosis. It has been deemed mandatory that all hospitals in England have an acute oncology service, and that appropriate training should be provided for a range of medical and nursing staff in emergency departments and the associated acute medical units.

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, in partnership with CW+ Healthcare Charity and the London Cancer Alliance (LCA), has developed two acute oncology resources – an acute oncology app and an e-learning course. Both are free for Chelsea and Westminster NHS staff.

LCA Acute Oncology Guidelines App The app contains the current LCA acute oncology clinical guidelines, as well as a directory of service for all oncology units across south and west London. The app is available in Apple and Android versions, and is automatically updated to ensure the content remains current.

Acute Oncology for the Healthcare Professional e-Learning The e-learning course is suitable for any healthcare professional who manages the care of cancer patients, but is principally aimed at doctors and nurses in acute and general medicine, acute and general surgery, and emergency medicine.

It includes an introduction to acute oncology, the management of neutropenic sepsis, and

the management of metastatic spinal cord compression.

No prior oncology knowledge is needed. The course takes approximately an hour to complete, and CPD accreditation has been requested.

IT system outage update On 23 November, our data centre suffered water damage resulting in a temporary

outage of our IT infrastructure for the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital site, including staff access to some of our patient administration systems. The IT infrastructure was successfully migrated to the backup, external server on the 24 November restoring access to clinical systems, however there was a temporary disruption to completing electronic discharge summaries and outpatient clinic letters. We believe that we are now up to date with the completion of all electronic discharge summaries affected by the downtime but if you think you are missing any correspondence from the week commencing 23 November, please do contact me and I will look into this for you. To confirm no outpatient appointments, daycase or elective cases were cancelled as a result of this IT downtime and all patient interactions were recorded. Additionally our referral processing was unaffected by this outage. Additionally the feed to our GP Review portal was restored last week. Review (https: results.chelwest.nhs.uk) is our GP hub were which includes copies of all our patient correspondence, patient results and patient attendance notifications for the patients registered at your practice. Any GPs who refer patients to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital can apply for a login to the Review

portal. If you would like a Review login or required a password reset, please email: [email protected] Thank you for your patience and understanding during this outage.

Paediatric laser service

in both adult and children. We shall be running dedicated laser clinics and treatments. The laser unit is based at the Chelsea and Westminster site on Saturn ward. It is run by Dr Bisola Laguda and CNS Catherine Sheehan based in the Department of Paediatric Dermatology. We welcome your referrals.

West Middlesex University Hospital Women, pregnancy and mental health Doing really well on the SSRI, but now pregnant? What to do?

Don’t just stop it immediately. “The absolute risk for any woman is low” Faculty of Perinatal Psychiatry Annual Scientific Meeting RC Psych Nov 15 If the risk of the medication is low, the risk of stopping might be higher. Stopping might be the right thing to do but you have time to think, seek advice and come to a shared decision with the patient. Want to know more about mental health and pregnancy?

Glowing review for West Mid Ambulatory Emergency Care A year after it first opened, the Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) service at West Mid has received a very positive independent review by Healthwatch Hounslow. The AEC unit provides same-day emergency care, avoiding unnecessary admissions and allowing patients to return home safely without the need for an overnight stay. It was set up by the hospital in close partnership with Hounslow CCG, other local organisations and patient and carer representatives. The unit has received excellent feedback from patients, carers and health professionals, which was one of the reasons Healthwatch Hounslow decided to review the service now that it is fully established. The healthwatch report said; ‘The service is extremely well thought of, comprising a

clearly dedicated staff team which justifies consistently positive feedback among patients and healthcare professionals. Healthwatch noted the AEC succeeds in avoiding admitting patients to hospital, improving their overall experience and ensuring they receive prompt assessment and treatment, with follow-up care where necessary. It also stated that the service has led to substantial cost savings by avoiding around eight admissions a day and recommended further investment to increase capacity and

further facilities to provide more testing and diagnostics. Richard Ingrey, Service Manager for the AEC, said: ‘We are extremely grateful to Healthwatch Hounslow for their work in reviewing our service. It is very encouraging that they have found the service to be achieving its aim, particularly in improving the patient experience. We have taken on board all their comments and look forward to making further enhancements that will benefit our patients. Over the coming year, we have plans for a number of exciting developments as part of our ongoing service improvement.’
