Just as our Blessed Mother Mary and the Evangelist, called John, came
together at the foot of the cross to serve Christ crucified, so also do
the parish families bearing their names come together to serve God
by serving each other and all who make up the body of The Risen Lord.

A. Yes…
White, the color of joy and victory, is
a festive color and is used for the
seasons of Easter and Christmas. It is
also used for the feasts of Our Lord, Mary, All Saints,
Chair of Peter, Conversion of Paul, the Nativity of
John the Baptist, St. John the Evangelist, the angels,
and for saints who are not martyrs. It is also a reminder of the
resurrection, and can therefore be used at funerals where
purple or black may also be used. Gold may also be used on
solemn occasions.
Red (the color of fire and blood) is used on the days
when we celebrate the passion of Jesus, Passion
(Palm) Sunday and Good Friday. It is also used for
the birth feasts of the apostles and evangelists and
for the celebrations of martyrs. Red (the color of fire)
recalls the Holy Spirit and is used on Pentecost and
for the sacrament of Confirmation.
Green, seen everywhere in plants and trees,
symbolizes life, anticipation, and hope, and is used
during Ordinary Time. Ordinary does not mean
ordinary in the sense of routine or basic. Ordinary
means the weeks/months between the special seasons
(i.e.: Christmas, Lent, Advent and Easter), as in the
15th Sunday in Ordinary Time. It’s different from a regular
calendar, but not included in the special seasons.
The colors violet or purple in Advent help us to
remember that we are preparing for the coming of
Christ. Lent, the season of penance, repentance, and
renewal, also uses the colors violet or
purple.
Rose is an optional color and may be used on the
Third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday, and on the
Fourth Sunday of Lent, Laetare Sunday. It expresses
the joy of anticipation of both Christmas and Easter.

If you are planning to attend, please let us
know by calling the parish office
(978) 251-8571/ 256-2374 or emailing
Craig at [email protected]. This will help
us to get as accurate a head count as possible
so we know how much chocolate fondue and
dippers to prepare. We certainly don’t want
to run short! Coffee, tea, and other light
refreshments will also be served.
Do you have any questions that you would like
Fr. Brian to answer in his weekly “And The Answer Is”
article? A couple weeks ago, Fr. Brian published an
answer to a question that a young boy named Kyle
had asked. So now we are wondering if there are any
other children out there that would like a question
answered… because your questions are worth answering. If so, ask
mom, dad, or a grandparent to help you write it out (if you can’t write
it yourself). Then place it in an envelope with Fr. Brian’s name on it and
drop it into the offertory basket when you come to Mass. Then keep a
lookout for the answer in an upcoming bulletin!

WHAT I TELL MY ALTAR SERVERS…
by Fr. Dwight Longenecker: Catholic Priest, Author and Speaker (www.dwightlongenecker.com)
Before we get down to particulars, I want you to know why we have altar servers at all.
Do the deacons and I need you to bring the bread and the water and wine to the altar? No, we could do that ourselves. Do we need
you to carry candles and the cross and hold the book? Not really. The priest is supposed to extend his hands in prayer, so he can’t hold
the book, but we could just put it on the altar. Do we need you to ring the bell and turn the page and wash our hands? No. We could do
all that without you.
You’re not really employed to be useful. You’re employed to help lead the worship. As long as you understand that, everything else that
we teach you will follow. You see, all of us work together to lead the people of God in the worship of God — it’s not just the priest and
deacons. I rely on you not just to do those particular jobs. Instead, I rely on you for something far greater and nobler and more beautiful
and more true.
Our worship on earth reflects the worship in heaven. What we do here at the holy sacrifice of the Mass is a kind of distant echo of what
goes on in heaven. There, the Lamb of God is offered in one timeless and eternal sacrifice. There the saints and angels worship around
the throne of the Lamb. In that city there is no sun, moon, or stars, for the Lamb Himself is the light of that city. This altar you see here is a
reflection of the altar in heaven. Do you see the mosaic of the lamb on the front of the altar? That is because in heaven the Lamb is on
the throne and here the altar becomes his throne. The chalice in the mosaic is a sign of the eternal Precious Blood of the Lamb. This host is,
on earth, the sign of the Eternal Bread of heaven. The priest is an icon of Christ the Lord — and who are you? You represent and
reflect on earth the heavenly host. That’s right. I want you to represent the saints and angels. That’s why we have children serve the Mass
if we can, because you children remind us adults of what the Lord Jesus said: “Unless you become like a little child, you cannot enter the
kingdom of heaven.” So just by being children you remind us what we must be like to become like the saints and angels.
Therefore, since you represent the heavenly host of saints and angels, I want you to behave as such. Of course, I know that you are not
yet saints, and I know you are not angels. You fight with your brothers and sisters. Some of you are bullies and others are cowards. You
lie and cheat and have bad thoughts. You disobey your parents and are selfish and unkind. Nevertheless, you have a role to play in the
Divine Liturgy, because despite all that, you are called to reflect something greater. You are called from what you are not to become all
that you shall be; and if you are struck with a sense of awe at what I am expecting of you, think how I feel, for I am a sinner just like you
are, and I am called to represent Christ Himself to the people
Since all of this is true, this is what we are going to do. First of all, when we come into church, we immediately put on the cassock.
These are your working clothes. We will serve in the Lord’s temple wearing the cassock and be like the boy Samuel who served in the
temple of God with simplicity and goodness. When you move in the house of God, do so with simple solemnity. Not po-faced and pious,
but also not silly and jokey. Just go about your business — remembering that you are in the house of God, a serious place for a serious
business. As you light the candles, set out the books, and prepare for Mass, remember that the people in the pews are watching you.
Your reverence and care and love for what you do will be communicated to them and help them to pray.
Then, before Mass begins, come back to the vestry with me and the deacon. There we will put on our surplices, albs, and vestments. Then
we will light the candles, charge the thurible, take our places, and wait for the Divine Liturgy to begin.
When you process into church, remember that you are leading the whole people of God into the presence of God. Our little procession
hearkens back to the procession of David and the priests up into the holy city of Zion. The cross will be lifted high, and you will walk with
a solemn and stately posture, for you are leading all of us into the presence of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Know where you are
going, and move there with the grace of a child and the dignity of a prince. Where you go, we will follow.
As you sit in the sanctuary, remember that actions speak louder than words. You may not have many tasks to do, but did you know that
they also serve who only stand and wait? Simply by your presence, your reverence, your listening to the Word of God with an attentive
ear, you will help to lead the worship and encourage those who see you. When you have a task to do, do it with simplicity and
confidence, as befits a servant of the King. Remember: If you are sloppy and casual in your attitude and your posture, that will be
communicated. It will distract people from Christ toward you, and the Mass is not about you any more than it is about me, the priest.
Remember that what we do at Mass is the most important thing in your life. Everything else comes after that. Seek first the kingdom of
God, and everything else will be added to you. Here at Mass you are seeing that beauty, truth, and love are the three most important
treasures on earth, and they are three things you cannot buy. Furthermore, while they are most precious, they are also (from a human
point of view) most worthless. What you are doing here when you serve at Mass is not a useful thing. There is no payment. There is no
reward — except the reward of knowing that your heart is right with God, and that you have spent an hour on the threshold of heaven.
And if you have learned how to do that, then throughout your life, whatever else happens, you will be most richly blessed.

World Marriage Day (WMD) honors husband and
wife as the foundation of the family, the basic unit of
society. It salutes the beauty of their faithfulness,
sacrifice and joy in daily married life.
HISTORY - The idea of celebrating marriage began in Baton Rouge, LA, in 1981, when couples encouraged the Mayor, the
Governor and the Bishop to proclaim St. Valentines Day as "We Believe in Marriage Day." The event was so successful that
the idea was then presented to, and was adopted by, Worldwide Marriage Encounter's National Leadership.
By 1982, 43 Governors officially proclaimed the day, and celebrations spread to US military bases in several foreign
countries. In 1983, the name was changed to "World Marriage Day," designated to be celebrated each year on the second
Sunday in February. In 1993, his Holiness, Pope Saint John Paul II, imparted his Apostolic Blessings on World Marriage Day.
WMD celebrations continue to grow and spread to more countries and faith expressions every year.
SYMBOL - Our World Marriage Day Symbol speaks readily of the role and values we proclaim.
Husband and wife are symbolically seen as two candle-like figures, reminding us that married love
calls us to help enlighten the world. The couple is joined by a heart, focusing on love as the power
that fosters unity within the couple and generates the capacity to be life-giving and inspire others to
fruitfulness and unity.
THEME - Our Theme for WMD has been permanently adopted as "Love One Another". This phrase is
the commandment given us by Jesus in John 15:12. It speaks to us in a simple, but challenging way of
how our Father wishes us to live. Loving one another is a daily decision: simple, but challenging.

A Story of Sainthood
Saint Josephine Margaret Bakhita was born around 1869 in the village of Olgossa in the
Darfur region of Sudan. Historians believe that sometime in February 1877, Josephine was
kidnapped by Arab slave traders. For the next 12 years she would be bought, sold and
given away over a dozen times, and experience anywhere from fair to cruel treatment. She
spent so much time in captivity that she forgot her original name. When her mistress (the last
to own her) decided to travel without Josephine, she placed her in the custody of the
Canossian Sisters in Venice. While she was in the custody of the sisters, she came to learn
about God. According to Josephine, she had always known about God, who created all
things, but she did not know who He was.
When her mistress returned from Sudan, Josephine refused to leave. Her mistress spent three
days trying to persuade her to leave the sisters, but Josephine remained steadfast. Since slavery had been outlawed in
Sudan before Josephine was born, she could not be lawfully made a slave. For the first time in her life, Josephine was free
and could choose what to do with her life. She chose to remain with the Canossian Sisters.
She was baptized, confirmed and received her first communion on January 9, 1890 and took the name Josephine Margaret
and Fortunata, the Latin translation for her Arabic name, Bakhita. Josephine became a novice on December 7, 1893, and
took her final vows on December 8, 1896. She was eventually assigned to a convent in Schio, Vicenza, where she worked as
a cook and a doorkeeper for the next 42 years. When speaking of her enslavement, she often professed she would thank
her kidnappers, for had she not been kidnapped, she might never have come to know Jesus Christ and entered His Church.
During World War II, the people of the village of Schio regarded her as their protector… although bombs fell on their
village, not one citizen died.
On the evening of February 8, 1947, Josephine spoke her last words, "Our Lady, Our Lady!" She then died, and her body
lay on display for three days afterwards.
In 1958, the process of canonization began for Josephine under Pope Saint John XXIII. On December 1st, 1978, Pope Saint
John Paul II declared her venerable. Sadly, the news of her beatification in 1992 was censored in Sudan. But just nine
months later, Pope Saint John Paul II visited Sudan and honored her publicly. He canonized her on October 1, 2000.

FROM OUR BUSINESS MANAGER
PAUL FIRICANO
February 3
rd
…
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time.
And oh, it’s also Super Bowl Sunday!
As I think we all know, this weekend is Super
Bowl Sunday, and once again our beloved
Patriots are back in the big game for the 3
rd
year in a row! I am a
huge Patriots fan
(although no one is a
bigger fan than our
Pastor), and I am
hopeful that we get to
see a great game and a win for the Patriots
and all their fans. At my house, we carefully
prepare, getting game food and drinks ready
and arranged in advance within eyesight of the
television, so not a minute will be missed. The
dog is walked, fed and ready to go before
kick-off. We have, and know, our “spots” to sit
in advance. I’ll be somewhat pacing and sitting
on the edge of my seat—my youngest son, with
all his Pats gear on, will be doing the same—
and the other kids will probably be curled up in
the corner of the couch or on the floor
“watching the game,” but more likely on their
phones, looking up
whenever we yell at the
television. The
anticipation all week
leading up to game-time
is exciting and fun. We
all want to know what
the final result will be,
right?
Wouldn’t it be great if
every week you had that same feeling of
anticipation and excitement leading up to
Sunday Mass? Attending Sunday Mass allows
us to be “fed” by listening to the Gospel, by
inviting ourselves to be inspired by the homily
given by the priest or deacon, and most
important, to experience the celebration of the
Eucharist, putting God first in our lives. This IS
the final result that you will experience every
time you go to Mass. Sunday Mass is a time to
give thanks to God for all that has happened in
our lives. It is also a time to call out to God,
asking for help in all the things that are about
to happen in our lives. I mean, I bet a lot of
people pray for a Patriots win!
So, it’s game time.
Enjoy the game,
and hope to see you at Mass!

Today’s gospel is from Mark (1:29-39)… “Rising early the next
morning, Jesus went off to a lonely place in the desert; there he was
absorbed in prayer. Simon and his companions managed to track
him down; and when they found him, they told him, ‘Everybody is
looking for you!’”
There are several things in this passage for us to think about. First,
we must consider how important prayer was for Jesus, and how
he gave an example for us to find time for uninterrupted prayer.
Second, we should look at the effort to bring others to Jesus and
Jesus to them. Simon did not do this alone—he had companions.
All this says something to me about the priesthood and about
parish life as I have just celebrated my 57
th
anniversary of
ordination. I heard of another who was ordained sometime after
me and when he arrived at his first parish, the people made
presentations to him at his first Mass. The first brought the new
priest a basket of food, handed it to him and said, “Now you are
a priest. You are to feed your people.” The second brought him a
wooden staff and said, “Now you are a priest. You are to lead your
people.” The third brought him a hat with a bird feather on it and
said, “Now you are a priest. You are to be a man of the Spirit.”
I hope and pray that this is what I have been doing all these
years. Thinking about all the changes in me and in the Church over
these 57 years, I am drawn to the people, in my thoughts and
prayers, and always with gratitude.
I am so very glad that I am a parish priest. My role and the role
of the parish are changing rapidly. The parish of the
future needs to prioritize what it will do, and, do it with
excellence. The parish, I think, will become more like a retreat
center for spiritual growth and opportunity for adults. It will not be
as child-centered as it has been in the past. The spiritual life of the
parish as a whole should be the primary consideration. From the
fullness of a spiritual life will come the works Christ wants us
perform for each other and the world.
Today’s newly ordained experience a tug-of-war between the
continued implementation of Vatican II and returning to an earlier
time in the Church. Pastors will be priests ordained for less than 10
years. Rather than finding a serene and settled parish where they
can learn the ropes, newly ordained priests will be quickly thrown
into positions of heavy responsibility. The skills needed today are
primarily: leadership, management, conflict resolution, ministry
training and collaboration.
The Holy Spirit is edging us toward a new paradigm, a new
definition of priesthood and parish. As we meditate on the
scripture passage given above, we realize that to live by a new
vision, and be moved by a mission, we will have “to track him
(Jesus) down” and do all this with others until we can say,
“Everybody is looking for you!”

PRAYER FOR MY PARISHAlmighty God, my parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. It will be friendly if I am. It will be
holy if I am. Its pews will be filled if I help fill them. It will do great work if I work. It will be prayerful if I pray.
It will make generous gifts to many causes if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its worship if I invite
and bring them. It will be a parish family of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity and mercy
if I – who make it what it is – am filled with these same qualities. Therefore with the help of God, I will dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my
parish to be. Bless my journey, Lord God, that I might build the Church through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
