CULINARY MEDITERRANEAN VOYAGE WITH CELEBRITY CHEF UMBERTO MENGHI

Lisbon - Portimao - Cadiz - Palma De Mallorca - Porto Mahon - Ajaccio (Corsica) - Livorno (Florence) - Portofino - Civitavecchia (Rome)

September 26 - October 5, 2011 aboard the luxurious Silver Cloud

Lisbon, Portugal Lisbon bears the mark of an incredible heritage with laid-back pride. Spread over a string of seven hills north of the Rio Tejo (Tagus River) estuary, the city presents an intriguing variety of faces to those who negotiate its switchback streets. In the oldest neighborhoods, stepped alleys are lined with pastel-color houses and crossed by laundry hung out to dry; here and there miradouros (vantage points) afford spectacular river or city views. In the grand 18th-century center, black-and-white mosaic cobblestone sidewalks border wide boulevards. Elétricos (trams) clank through the streets, and blue-and-white azulejos (painted and glazed ceramic tiles) adorn churches, restaurants, and fountains.

Portimao, Portugal Located on the estuary of the Arade River, Portimao has made its living from fishing since pre-Romans times. Today a sprawling port and a major sardine-canning centre. The mild climate of the Algarve and many sunny days attract multinational tourists in all seasons, coming here to visit historical sites, playing golf, strolling along the river boulevard or exploring the many shopping opportunities. Stunning rock formations and warm seawaters make the beaches particularly alluring. The most beautiful on the entire coast is Praia da Rocha, its wide expanse of sand is framed by jagged sea cliffs and the walls of an old fort that once protected the mouth of the Arade River.

Cádiz, Spain Gypsies, bulls, flamenco, horses—Andalusia is the Spain of story and song, the one Washington Irving romanticized in the 18th century. All the romantic images of Andalusia, and Spain in general, spring vividly to life in Seville. The

smaller cities of Cádiz—the Western world's oldest metropolis, founded by Phoenicians more than 3,000 years ago—and Jerez, with its sherry cellars and purebred horses, have much to explore as well.

Palma De Mallorca, Spain More than five times the size of its fellow Balearic islands, Mallorca is shaped roughly like a saddle. The Sierra de Tramuntana, a dramatic mountain range soaring to nearly 5,000 feet, runs the length of its northwest coast, and a ridge of hills borders the southeast shores; between the two lies a great, flat plain that in early spring becomes a sea of almond blossoms. The beaches are beautiful, but save time for the charms of the northwest and the interior: caves, bird sanctuaries, monasteries and medieval cities, local museums, outdoor cafés, and village markets.

Ajaccio (Corsica), France Corsica's gifts of artistic and archaeological treasures, crystalline waters, granite peaks, and pine forests add up to one of France's most unspoiled sanctuaries. Mountain people born and bred, true Corsicans are highland spirits, at home in the all-sustaining chestnut forest, the Laricio pines, or the dense under-growth of the maquis, a variety of wild and aromatic plants that gave Corsica one of its sobriquets, "the perfumed isle." Its strategic location made Corsica a prize hotly contested by a succession of Mediterranean powers. Their vestiges remain in impressive citadels, churches, bridges, and medieval watchtowers.

Livorno (Florence), Italy One of the most popular cruise ports of call in the western Mediterranean as it is the gate-way to some of Italy's finest attractions, the cities of Florence and Pisa, not to mention the

delightful landscapes of Tuscany. Florence, the city of the lily, gave birth to the Renaissance and changed the way we see the world. For centuries it has captured the imagination of travelers, who have come seeking rooms with views and phenomenal art. Pisa is famous for one of the world's most quirky historical attractions: its leaning tower, but this structure is one part of a triumvirate that offers one of the most dramatic architectural vista's in the country.

Portofino, Italy Like the family jewels that bedeck its habitual visitors, the Italian Riviera is glamorous, but in an old-fashioned way. The rustic and elegant, the provincial and chic, the cosmopolitan and the small-town are blended together here in a sun-drenched pastiche that defines the Italian side of the Riviera. Inspiring poets and artists for centuries, Portofino is one of the most photographed villages along the Ligurian coast, with a decidedly romantic and affluent aura, Once an ancient Roman colony and taken by the Republic of Genoa in 1229, it has also been ruled by the French, English, Spanish, and Austrians, as well as by marauding bands of 16th-century pirates.

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy Rome is a heady blend of artistic and architectural masterpieces, classical ruins, and extravagant baroque churches and piazzas. The city's 2,700-year history is on display wherever you look; the ancient rubs shoulders with the medieval, the modern runs into the Renaissance, and the result is a bustling open-air museum. Julius Caesar and Nero, the Vandals and the Popes, Raphael and Caravaggio, Napoléon and Mussolini are among the countless luminaries who have left a mark on the city. Today Rome's formidable legacy is kept alive by its people, their history knit into the fabric of their everyday lives.
