R.I.P.It was just a matter of time. Everyone knew that this day was about to come sooner or later. However, nobody expected that it was going to happen so drastically and that was a real shock for all the Kitsch party attendants.

At 1 AM, I saw the first missed call, which I had no idea was one of many I was going to receive that night. I started my regular Saturday night partying without calling back. Around 2 AM I went out from one of the clubs situated in a basement. My cell phone went crazy. Dozens of missed calls and text messages. Some of them were multiple. Like one from my Mom and the next one from my best friend. I rushed to call back all the most important people in my life.

Family members, relatives and friends, but all of them were not available at that moment. It looked like all the people on Earth I care about suddenly decided to switch off their mobiles or were in the middle of a conversation while I was trying to reach them. Scary isnt it? But this was just the beginning.I turned back to see what was that horrible noise, which came from the May Rynek (Small Market) and Wielopole Street direction. Hordes of club-bers covered with dust, some of them crying (es-pecially the girls) wearing only T-shirts, showed up from around the corner. It was freezing but I explained to myself, still with the cell phone at my ear, that it was the weekend and people re-act extraordinary sometimes. Then I heard police cars and fire trucks, not the first time since I went out from a club. Something really serious was going on out there and I had no idea what it was.Finally my best mate picked up the phone:

- Jesus Christ, are you alright man? He asked me in his first words.- Yeah bro why shouldnt I? I replied with the ques-tion.- Kitsch is done man! Can you believe it? People are injured but thank God nobody was seriously hurt.

It came to me like lightning. I could not believe

it. Kitsch, the legendary Kitsch. It was more than a club. It was an institution. If you wanted to go to an after-party, Kitsch was the place you could easily hang out at 10 AM on Sunday. If you wanted to meet Erasmus students, Kitsch was literary their drinking headquarter. If you wanted to drink all night for pennies, Kitsch was the place where 70 PLn was more than you needed to get hammered and get back home by cab. kitsch was situated right in the middle of your way from the Main Market to Hala Targowa, so if you wanted to finish your day with a famous sausage from the blue van, kitsch was your option to wait for the night bus, after having this popular Cracows night snack. It was a place all the newcomers asked for first when they arrived in the city. Receptionists working in hostels had special maps with Kitsch pointed out on them. Every-one had at least one good story to tell their friends, which was somehow related to kitsch. Former gay club, in the early years of the 21st century, became an international embassy for people who just wanted to have fun. kitsch was extraordinary.

- Hey dude are you still there? I heard once more from my cell phone.- What happened for Christ sake? I replied again with a question.- They said in the television that the staircase collapsed.

I cant remember the end of the conversation. nothing was important to me at that moment. Kitsch, the legendary place was gone forever. That was all that mattered.

There probably wont be another Kitsch. That is true. But we shouldnt fall in despair. Grief is acceptable, but Kitsch was just a place. People are the most important. This is what Cracow is all about. Its the peo-ple. So there might not be another Kitsch in the future, but Im more than sure that there will be another place with a unique atmosphere like Kitsch. A place which will be known internationally like Kitsch was and lets just hope that this place will emerge soon.

This time its simple. December is all about Christmas and the preparations for this annual, important (especially in Polish culture) event which involves everyone at home. Since Christmas started to be considered as an international holiday it is becoming more and more commercialized. Poland is no exception, however we stick to our unique traditions which you might find interesting. To read more about Christmas in Poland turn to page 28.

Banialuka is known for its friendly atmosphere the heart of the pub is long, wide bar, along which the guests sit willingly. Undeniable advantage of the pub is its location. Unlike to most of Cracows premises it is not located in the basement, but on ground floor. Along the large windows overlooking the beautiful Szczepanski Square, you can sit back and watch live sports or enjoy the bustling Old Town.

Miners holiday, celebrated on December 4th, which is also saint Barabaras holiday- the patroness of miners. Traditionally, the holiday begins with a morning mass in a church with the figure of St. Bar-bara. After the mass, the miners orchestra marches through settle-ments, in which miners and their families live. Festivals, concerts, games are organized for everyone connected with mining.

Celebrated in Poland in honor of bishop, St. nicholas of Myra. The presence of Santa Claus, announ-ces the coming of Christmas. On this day, Santa Claus brings gifts to children. Sometimes he leaves them under the pillow or in a stoc-king hung above the fireplace. In schools, children draw out a name of a classmate. Then they make or buy a small gift for that person.

In Christian tradition, it is the day before Christmas, ending the pe-riod of Advent. Christmas Eve be-gins with the first star in the sky, which symbolizes The Star of Beth-lehem (The birth of Jesus). Dinner begins with prayer, followed by breaking wafers with family mem-bers, wishing them all the best in life. The traditional dinner contains 12 meals, none of them made out of meat. There is always one extra plate on the table in case a stran-ger comes.

In Christian tradition it is a ho-liday commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas is pre-ceded by a three week waiting time (exactly 4 Sundays) called Advent. This holiday begins at midnight with a ceremonial mass in church. Christmas is a work-free holiday, so is Decem-ber 26th, the so-called Second Day of Christmas, which com-memorates St. Stephen the martyr.

It is really nice to find a new place, especially when they come out of the blue. When you step inside Obera ssiadw a distinguished waiter leads you downstairs and reveals a fancy cosy underground restaurant nestled between tunnels. Softly lit interior and the rustic seating turns you immediately in romantic mood.

As you take your seat, the waiter recommends dishes appropriate for him & her, and a wine, which is palatable to them a 4 year old Chilean Sauvignon, in this case, nicely wets the palette for the forthcoming meals.

The appetizer was elegantly presented as well as delicious. We were treated with a light snack consisting of a home-made pate combined with sweet bread and cranberry sauce.

The main course splendidly surprised us with the presentation of our dishes and delighted with the accompanying aroma. Baked salmon was beautifully demonstrated, stylishly laid out on a large leaf-shaped plate. The dish was served with perfectly prepared white

rice with an accompaniment of vegetables served in drawn butter. The salmon was delicately prepared with two contrasting sauces; one of sweet beetroot and cream with the other consisting of mayonnaise, cream and Balsamico, combined to melt in the mouth in a most satisfying way.

The second dish of Pork Shashlik, in contrast to the first one, was a meal fit for a man. Hanging above the plate and presented with a blue flame underneath, surrounded by roasted potatoes on a bed of pickled gherkins was a wonder to behold for any modern day male barbarian. The rustic potatoes were roasted to perfection and the mixture of pork pieces, bacon and onions were beautifully balanced and blended into a wonderfully wholesome meal.

The aroma and taste of the food plus great wine created a wonderfully romantic atmosphere, ideal for that special date. To make the long story short, traditional Polish cuisine with a breath of fresh air.

The first and most obvious thing to remember about is alcohol. There wont be any New

Years Eve celebration without opening a bottle of champagne at midnight. In the meantime you

can always drink vodka or whiskey to warm up the party before the final countdown.

The second thing, logically is the food. Try to serve something unexpected or even exotic. Latin American guacamole sounds like a plan on a polish New Years Eve party. But today, in the era of great popularity of Asian food, serving sushi is probably the best way to baffle your guests. Besides, there are many places in Cracow, where you can actually order it fresh with home delivery. A great Menu for twenty people which is going to satisfy everyone. Salmon, crab, shrimp, eel, squid, bivalves, herring and many more delicious and healthy pieces of sea food.

Thirdly, are the guests. Dont throw all your friends into one big bag. Pay attention to what sort of personalities you invite. A party with couples only, might turn

into a dry funeral banquet. Only singles may turn your apartment into a cave of

debauchery.

organizing a home party doesnt mean that you will have to quit all your new years Eve plans. The night from december 31st to January 1st is annually one of those, really worth commemorating. you can still dress fancy while staying at home with your friends and relatives. Its not only prestigious balls that go down to history. once in a decade, a well prepared home party might become an epic event which gives you memories to last forever.

Fourthly, the music. If you dont have any special New Years Eve playlist, dont regret it. The best parties are often the improvised ones. Tell your friends to bring some CDs, or just let them add songs on YouTube and play them one by one. You can always organize karaoke, but remember not to force anyone. After a few drinks, every guest will find a little bit of courage to hold the microphone for at least a minute. Besides, group singing is also a pleasurable experience.

The fifth thing is the party theme. Masquerade might be fun, but only when everybody accepts the rules. Try not to be very complicated and give your guests the most varied range of options possible.

PRePaRatIon method: Cook pasta as it says on the packaging (usually 5 minutes), rinse it with cold water and leave until the water drains off. Roast the chicken in Wok (or use frying pan if you dont have it), add a spoon of garlic and chopped up ginger, mix it with vegetables and continue roasting. To diversify the whole thing you may put crumbled egg omelet inside. At last mix it all with pasta and season it with sauces.When everything is done, arrange it on two platters and decorate it with seed onion, roasted peanuts and Lucerne germ.Voila!

avoiding the brown bottle. If you decide to drink though, be prepared. Eat, and eat fat! This will reduce the absorption

of alcohol into the blood. Before you go out eat some spaghetti, chili or strong chicken

soup. You will not only be able to enjoy your party longer but

it will also reduce the drastic morning-after effects.

tIPS 2. ThE drInkInG GamE: donTS While enjoying yourself at the party, there are few things worth remembering. First of all, avoid mixing a lot of different types of alcoholic drinks. Especially avoid mixing wine with anything. Red wine mixed with stronger liquors will greet you with the worst morning ever. Another thing to be aware of is being cautious when around sweet blended concoctions. Dont overdo them, all the sugar mixed with strong liquors is a ticking time bomb, exploding when least expected.

3. ThE mornInG afTEr: drInkS Dehydration is the first sensation

you get in the morning. You feel that you could drink an ocean dry but drink smart! Plain water is not enough to quench such

thirst. Apart from water your body cries for vitamins and microelements. Try having water

with lemon (not artificial lemon water but water with actual lemon in it) it would be best to also add some honey to it. Tomato juice, rich in potassium will not only satisfy your thirst but also help you fight the headache. If you need to look fresh in the morning try having strong espresso with lots of squeezed lemon juice in it. However this sounds (and actually tastes) disgusting, such mixture will get you up and running in no time. You can also fight fire with fire. Popular method in some parts of Poland is having a 50 gram shot of vodka with lots of pepper, very effective against hangover stomach aches.

4. ThE mornInG afTEr: food. The last thing you want to do now is upset your stomach. Eat light. Your best bet would be on soups. I'm from the distant land of Brazil and since it is not a very old country, I was amazed by the atmosphere of Cracow. The aspects of a modern city, mixed with such old buildings, a gorgeous market square and charming streets make me feel like I am taking part in a movie. I can spend a whole day here just walking around, drinking some beer (God save ywiec!) and enjoying a piece of the best local cake called szarlotka. Surprises? The first (great) one was the fact that most of the clubs and pubs in Cracow are situated under-ground. Guys, there are so many different possibilities for nightlife in this city you should try! However, I've been through some funny situations here as well. One day I was beaten up by an angry old woman in the street for no particular reason. Next time, the police stopped me just because I was crossing the road on a red light can you imagine that?! Oh, once during work, I was served spaghetti with strawberry sauce. That was some painful culture shock for me!

My advice for over-coming the culture shock? Forget about all stereotypes you have heard. Even if they are not created without a reason, you should just open your mind and enjoy the new reality. Otherwise, you are simply missing a lot! To

fully appreciate what the city offers, you should definitely join the regular free city tour, leaving from the market square everyday at 11am. After sightseeing, try some delicious Polish food. You can find dishes similar to those we have in Ukraine but still I was able to discover some other unique tastes like Zapiekanka or urek. For those who havent been in Krakow aqua park yet, I can only say: catch the next bus. Fun is around the corner!

State of Mind Polish is claimed to be the hardest foreign language to learn in the world (or at least it is situated among the top five hardest to learn). It is based on latin alphabet. Additionally, Poles have come up with their own letters, which increased the number to 32 letters (latin alphabet has only 24). Letters like , , , , , , , , might bring a head-ache to western tourists not familiar with them. That doesn't mean that it is impossible to learn the language quickly lets say in one semester. Proper, enthusiastic attitude, patience, spare time and some money will guide you to successful polish skills.

The number of Polish language users all around the world, estimates around 44 million people. You may wonder why the number is so high, while of-ficially there are only 38 million Polish citizens. That is because some histori-cal parts of Poland belong to other countries now. And that is why you can still find it easy to communicate abroad using Polish in countries like: Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania. We also mustnt forget about the large diaspora of Poles in North America, es-pecially in the area of the Great Lakes. Chicago and Toronto are probably the best examples.

Learning Polish requires patience and hours of practice. Pronunciation is probably the hardest part. Even when you want to say Hi!, Polish brings you trouble with its "cze". Don't give up! Cracow is one of the best places to learn this extremely difficult language and drive it to perfection. Many lan-guage schools have recently launched programs to teach foreigners the na-tive language of Noblists such as Czesaw Miosz or Wisawa Szymbor-ska (try pronouncing their names!).

walled with the ancient bricks is the most desirable and convenient area to settle while you crash in the city. Living on one of the main streets

such as Florianska, Sienna or Grodzka, having all the best venues at arms length, will definitely make your stay magical. However, as always in life, the price for the royal view is not cheap. Renting one room in the neighborhood of the Main Square will cost you more or less 1500 PLN per month. Remember that late night fuss and noises of people leaving parties comes along with the whole package. Not without reason they say, Cracow is the city that absolutely never sleeps

kazImIeRz Number two on our list, but

number one for every wild artistic soul or for those who just really love

beer. With its numerous cafes and pubs, the old Jewish district Kazimierz, delivers an

unforgettable, gloomy but cozy (at the same time) atmosphere. Whats more, this area is

only a 10 minute walk from the Main Market Square and it is well connected to other parts

of the city. That last advantage will be soon appreciated by every student who chooses

this location as his/her home. By catching one bus you will easily get to Ruczaj where most

of the Jagiellonian Universitys faculties are located. If necessary, tram will take you to Cra-

cow University of Economics or University of Technology in just a few minutes. After fulfill-

ing student duties, Kazimierz will help you cherish life with great

local food and sounds of Klezmer music. Sharing an

apartment with your friend on this territory means about 1000 PLN less in your pocket

each month.

The area towards north western Cracow is known

for being occupied by stu-dents of the AGH Univer-sity of Technology. Apart

from great parties and cheep beer, you will find a museum of the Young

Poland movement Rydlwka. For separate rooms in this neighbor-

hood you should prepare your budget

for about 600 PLN of expense which makes this district

affordable even for those living on a

shoestring.

Every city has a place covered with ill repute. Cracow is not

an exception here. Built by socialistic regime, Nowa Huta

("The New Steel Mill") is not only a living architectural

reminder of the past but it is also infamous for being

dangerous and very distant. If you are not necessarily

a fan of suburbs and local hooligans or bullies you may want to avoid this

place not only during the night but unfortunately

also during the daytime. Although, doing justice, it is

necessary to mention that the district of Nowa Huta is

recently under development and rents seems more than

reasonable. A spacious apart-ment is about 30-40 percent

cheaper comparing to the Old Town or Kazimierz.

On the opposite bank

of the Vistula River you will find another district worth con-

sidering. Podgrze, with its beautiful neo-gothic church of St Joseph and its

historical background is a great choice not only to visit but to rent an apartment as well. Especially because the rents here are much lower than in the strict center. Having your

own room is a sum of about 800 PLN monthly. Podgrze gets extra points

for an exceptional and non-commercialized style.

Taking this into consideration you already know that those things are available everywhere. Galeria Krakowska is my favourite place for shopping. Great variety of brands and close proximity of shops is very comfortable and convenient - said Chrischen from Germany who buys a lot of presents for his family every time hes in Cracow.

Aforementioned Galeria Krakowska is the most popular shopping destination in the city. Besides this one, you can also find Galeria Kazimierz or Bonarka malls, quite good places for shopping. If you are allergic to enormous malls you can avoid them by visiting the market in Kleparz. You can find some interesting stuff there as well.

If you happen to find your wallet only with a percent of what it had before, dont worry! You can still afford to buy a present!

According to Cole, a tourist from London: There is al-ways something to take back for somebody. After spending all your money on drinking, you can still af-ford to purchase a few bits and pieces here and there. I found many handmade items; made from a selection of raw materials such as wood and amber into beauti-fully crafted ornaments.

So, the problem with costs is solved but there is one crucial thing you still need to know, namely the right moment to shop.

tIme Timing in shopping, especially before Christmas, is of a great importance to us. Before visiting your home you want to have some time only for you and your friends. Thats the first argument against leaving Christmas shopping for the last moment. Another is the crowd. Crowds of people in the mall, in the trams, buses and in the fitting-rooms. That issue may successfully destroy your plans for the last days in Cracow. To avoid unpleas-ant surprises, you should do shopping at the end of No-vember or in the early days of December. The range of Christmas goods is available then and you can choose exactly what you want without the hurry and stress.

tionally everything is done in the morning of christmas Eve. The first thing to be done, is to dress up the christmas tree. This is usually under the responsibility of the children. It is quite popular to hang sweets on the tree (which are usually eaten before sunset). after that families gather and prepare meals. christmas Eve is a day

of lent, so no meals containing meat can be consumed. after they are prepared, it is time to await the first star in the sky.

The star is a symbol of the bethlehem Star, which was seen by the magi. It symbolized the birth of Jesus. nowadays,

it means that it is time to gather around the table and get ready for the meal. The table is covered with a white tablecloth a symbol of the swaddling

clothes, Jesus was wrapped in. Traditionally, some hay should be put underneath it to reminisce the

manger in bethlehem. There should always be one extra plate on the table, for an unexpected guest wanting a warm meal (alluding to mary and Joseph looking for shelter in bethlehem).

christmas Eve begins with prayer, or reading excerpts from the gospel of St. matthew or St. Luke, concerning the birth of Jesus. after that, family members wish themselves all the best for the upcoming year. Every wish should be granted after breaking tiny bits of that persons wafer, which he/she is hold-ing. The tradition of wafer breaking is a typi-cally polish custom.

In a typical polish home, christmas Eve supper con-

sists of 12 meals. The number has a symbolic meaning of the

Twelve apostles and twelve months of the year. Trying every dish grants you luck

through the upcoming year. The most common meals in poland include: borsch with dumplings (mushroom or sauerkraut filling). Some fami-lies prefer mushroom soup, which is also very traditional. Every table is full of fish, mainly carp or trout, served in many different ways. other typical meals are potatoes, cabbage with peas, cabbage with mushrooms, dumplings with cabbage, groat with dried mushrooms, beans with dried plums, noodles with poppy seeds, kutia, compote from dried fruit, almond soup, different salads, cakes, pies like poppy-seed cake and many, many more.

chRIStmaS eve cuStomS and BelIefSchristmas Eve is rich in customs and superstitions. Their origins can be found

in pre-christian beliefs. one of them is being kind to each other, avoid-ing fights, which might summon demons. all injuries or illnesses during

christmas holidays are considered to be bad luck, which might fore-shadow health problems in the future. Try-

ing all twelve meals also means that there wont be a lack of food in the

upcoming year. Some people put a carp scale in their wallet, which

is supposed to grant prosper-ity and wealth. a different

custom is giving a piece of wafer to animals. accord-ing to tradition, at mid-night all animals speak in a human voice. Singing carols and giving gifts is a more common tradition

across the world.

Annually, at the beginning of December, somewhere around Santa Clause Day (the 6th of December) many shop own-ers put out their goods in tiny, wooden cabins (which resemble small houses).

Colorfully decorated with many Christmas ornaments they are situ-

ated next to each other, creating al-leys of shop stands located in Cra-

cows Main Market. Right next to the Cloth Hall where the huge Christmas tree stands,

dressed up in hundreds of lights and ornaments, as well as the stage, on which concerts during New Years Eve are go-ing to be performed.

Lets focus on the stalls, and what you can get there. If you

forgot about a Christmas gift for your relatives or friends, dont

worry! You will definitely find some-thing special in the stands. Starting

from warm sweaters, all 100% woolen, made in Poland with traditional and regional patterns. Winters are rather chilly in our

booth, with the word grzaniec (obvi-ously) written on it. You just have to try this! Besides from wine, tea - sea-soned with Slivovitz alcohol, lemon, cloves, mint and honey is also sold. Drinking alcohol in public places is strictly forbidden in Poland, however when the fair is opened an excep-tion is made for grzaniec and the tea on the high voltage as we call it. It sure does warm a person up, espe-cially in the winter time.

So if you have a chance to be in Cra-cow in December, be sure to visit the Christmas fair. You wont regret it. But hurry up! It closes right after Christmas.

The Christmas Fair is also the ideal place to buy something for yourself. If you realize that you dont have any decorations for your Christmas tree, you will find a huge variety at the fair. Beginning with lights in every color from one tint to multi color. You can choose whatever ornaments you wish to have in different shapes. With no decoration, plain, to orna-ments with paintings on them. If you get hungry from all the shop-

ping spree, you can buy some deli-cacies. If you feel like having some-thing sweet, start with gingerbread cookies or candy. You can also get some sweet roasted nuts and seeds, all covered in that mouthwatering caramel flavor. If you feel like hav-ing something warm and fulfilling, try barbequed oscypek - a type of cheese - with cranberry sauce. If youre not a cheese lover, go get a barbequed sausage, shish kebab, Polish pierogis, some sizzling veg-gies, etc. Now, lets get to the main attraction of the fair: grzaniec gali-cyjski. Hot wine, seasoned with some honey, ginger, cloves and cinnamon. It is sold from a huge barrel shaped

Ck Browar is one of those places, that cant be omitted by authentic beer enthusiasts. Located just by a five minute walk from the Main Market, exhorts to visit its medieval cellars as soon as you reach the Bagatela Theatre. A local mini brewery, pub, night club, restaurant and hunting room. All of that you will find in the historic cellars at the junction of Podwale and Krupnicza Streets. Definitely the most friendly place in the facility is the beer hall furnished with deco benches and a beer producing apparatus. Non-pasteurized and non-filtered beer made in accordance with an old Austro-Hungarian recipe is probably the main at-traction of this beerhouse. The beer, always fresh is poured directly from the tanks into the guests mugs. But thats not all that CK Browar has to of-fer to its clients. After a few beer quaffs you may become a little bit hungry. All you need to do is move on into the restaurant part or the hunters room, where wild game dishes are served. What is more, when you feel like dancing, you can also join the party in the discotheque Laboratium, which is situated nearby. All in the same building!

Probably the biggest attraction of CK Browar is self service. You dont have to wait for the next cool beer to be served by the waiter. You can order a pipe and enjoy the fun of bartending by your own with your friends.

It stayed in the shadow of the Old Town and Kazimierz district for quite a while. Situated on the right bank of the Wisa River, Podgrze used to be an independent town. History wasnt kind with this land and permanently linked it with the tragedy of Holocaust. This neighbourhood needed dec-ades to bounce back. Everything is changing now. Little by little, it gains more splendor and proper attention. If you want to witness the history and transformation of the place, book three hours in your daily schedule and catch a tram towards Podgrze (7, 13 or 24 from the city centre).

Let the Plac BohateRw getta (Square of the Ghetto Heroes) be our starting point of the exploration. The scenery of this place is dominated by a permanent installation of 70 chairs, opened in 2005. This piece of modern art is a tribute to those who were forced by nazis to leave their properties before being sent to the nearby Paszw work camp. When you look around, you should notice the pHArMAcy MuSE-uM which was a place to meet and organize for the Jewish conspiracy movement. All conspiracy was possible thanks to the owner - Tadeusz Pankiewicz, the only non-Jewish person on that side of the Ghetto wall. From this place, we walk into lIMAnoWSKIEGo StrEEt and direct our steps towards the MArKEt SquArE oF podGrZE.

2 Here is a trick. Standing in front of the maRket SquaRe you will notice that it is not only laid out at the foot of the hill but that it also has a shape of a trapeze. All of this to create an optical impression of a greater size.

And it is working. Your eyes will immediately catch sight of the breathtaking, neo-Gothic St JoSEpHS cHurcH situated at the top of the trapeze. Behind the monumental building you can find the BEdnArSKI pArK. In the past it was named the most beautiful city garden. Are you tired already? Dont worry. It is time for a little break..

caf and a small gallery within. Apart from warming up by a cup of excellent coffee, you are welcomed to admire a photographic exhibition of local scenes. All sweets-lov-ers are kindly invited to stop by the Rkawka caf (4B Brodziskiego Street). Apple, carrot or walnut cakes seem to be the finest choice before the next 15 minute walk to-wards the former manufacturing plant of Oscar Schindler.

4the SchIndleR factoRy (4 Lipowa Street) has been built two years before the

Second World War broke out. It was the silent witness of Schin-dlers heroism who employed Jews, thus saving them from extermination in concentration camps. He protected about 1100 people. This was introduced in Steven Spielbergs famous movie Schindlers List. Since 2010, visitors have the opportuni-ty to see an exhibition entitled krakw under nazi Occupation 19391945. It is open all week long, from 10 a.m. Try visiting this magnificent place a different time, because it's time con-suming, however it is undoubtedly worth visiting.

5 After this lesson of history it is time to get back to the present

and head for one of the most recognizable, must-see spots in contemporary Podgrze - the Drukar-nia jazz bar, which we have described in our pre-vious issue (1 nadwilaska Street). What makes it absolutely special among all destination land-marks is its riverside location, with an unique view of the sunset over the Wisa River and a new foot-bridge kadka oJca BeRnatka. The name of the place translates into "a printing house" and owes it to its original dcor of news spreads and printing devices. Its the one and only place to enjoy live jazz music, drinks and local bohemias project on this side of Cracow. Hopefully, you fell in love with Drukarnia, as well as in the whole area just like we did. cHEErS to podGrZE!

cracow is a unique city with lots of unique traditions. one of them is over seventy years old. A tradition of colorful nativity scenes relating to the archi-tecture of the old town. Marian nowacki, former teacher of artistic black-smithing in Warsaw introduced a new approach on the subject, implemen-ting architecture of nowa Huta district into traditional cracow crib.

Where did you get the idea of making nativity scenes? I dont really know, it just came to me. I guess it relates to my interest in different plastic forms. Its my fourth or even fifth crib and I think its the last one.

Why the last? Definitely too much work for the satisfaction it gives.

Whats the difference between a typical Cracow manger scene and the Nowa Huta one? It simply resembles the landmarks of Nowa Huta. Traditional nativity scenes from Cracow keep representing the same buildings since 1938, Wawel, St. Marys Basilica, Cloth hall. Ive been living in Nowa Huta for over fifty years and I love this place. I was the first one to implement architecture of this district into my works. My first nativity scene ended up in the History Museum of Cracow because of that innovation.

Which places of Nowa Huta do you usually show in your works? Mostly churches. My current crib contains architecture of three churches here: Lords Arc, tower of the church in Mistrzejowice and church of Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ near Ludowy Theathre.

Do you participate in the annual nativity scene competition in Cracow? I am showing my works there but I dont participate in the competition itself. There is a different annual competition organized by Norwids cultural centre for manger scenes resembling Nowa Huta architecture and I participate in those.

You were the first that implemented elements of this district to traditional nativity scenes. Did the competition grew since then? Unfortunately I am unrivalled. Mostly primary and secondary schools participate in Nowa Huta nativity scene competitions. Those works are quite primitive so I dont really take it seriously. You can say that my crib is out of competition. Its sad but there are not many professionals interested in this kind of architecture in their mangle scenes.

What happens to the cribs after that? I gave one to my daughter that works in a hospital so she can put it up during Christmas, also gifted one to a local shop, basically I gave them all away over the time. On the other hand I did not create that many of them. How long does it take to make such a crib?A whole year. Making such a crib takes time and patience but most of all you need to be in the right mood. There

are some days when I do nothing with it or just add one small element. I dont give myself any deadlines or anything like that but I usually begin making a new one before the New Year.

To most people, Nowa Huta is a typical dull district of public housing projects yet your nativity scene is very lively and colorful.Thats the canon of Cracows nativity scenes, cribs have to be full of bright, reflective plastic and metal elements. It doesnt matter if its a traditional one resembling the Old Town or Nowa Huta, it has to be motley. If we were to make cribs in natural colors even the traditional ones would look dull.

Do you think that more crib-makers will try to implement the architecture of Nowa Huta into their works? I doubt it. There is almost no fresh blood among those that make those nativity scenes. There are, however, teachers closely connected with Cracows history museum that try to popularize the tradition of Cracows manger scenes in their schools, both Old Town and Nowa Huta ones.

Do you think the tradition should be upheld? Of course, even if it was limited to schools. It provides good artistic development and gives the opportunity to work with different plastic forms.

In the 1930s, a triangle square marked out between Krlewska and Lea streets was named Inwalidw Square. It adjoined a non-existing Ruska Street, where The Jagiellonian University Professors House was built. On the crossroad of Krlewska and Pomorska streets, The Silesian House was constructed. The square closed a building raised for the insurance company from Lvov. And last but not least, air-raid shelters that Craco-ws inhabitants were forced to built in 1943. These mentioned buildings are the minimum of what is worth seeing on Inwalidw Square.

Most of them consisted of corridors and small rooms where toilets were located. People got in through two entrances situated on opposite sides of the hallway. There was no ventilation so inhabitants had to wear special masks. Alongside corridors there were wooden benches that people could sit on. In case of any trouble, only one emergency

exit was available!

Only seven air-raid shelters were discovered, three of which were tided. There are only few occasions to sightsee those forgotten places. One of them is the Cracow Museum night, that is held once a year in May. The entrance is free, queues are enormous, but its still worth seeing. Three thousand visitors in one night is quite a number (!) and the best confirmation of the shelters value.

the SIleSIan houSeIt was dedicated to students from Silesia. We can compare it to a contemporary dor-mitory. Its architecture singles the building out from the neighborhood. High ground floor covered with clinker-brick, the front elevation with horizontal divisions and semicircular corners of the building. All fea-tures describe the architectural style of the 1930s.

The history of the Silesian House is com-plicated. It was built in five years, what was considered to be long at the time. Since 1937 the Air and Anti-gas Defence Leagues cinema was located there. During the Second World War, Silesian House was the headquarter of Gestapo. Interrogations

took place on the first and second floors of the building, whereas wards were in the basement. Prisoners were psychically and mentally tortured what repeatedly led to their death. There are inscriptions written by pris-oners on the walls of three wards. The Silesian House is the only execution place of Poles that is under surveil-

Tenement house of The White- Collar Work-ers Insurance Company was located at 4 In-walidw Square. It is the most characteristic building nearby because of its architecture in Art Deco style. Its front elevation is em-bellished with triangle-tipped windows on the ground floor. Moreover, its top is deco-rated with rhombus- shaped friezes. It also has a semicircular corner and horizontal di-visions of balconies.

This market is full of contradictions. To begin, with the vividly seen differences in the architec-ture and to finish with the destinations of the buildings in the past and now. And for sure, the interviewed people were right. The square is crowded and is considered as a stop while com-muting , but still there is a lot of things to see.. So if you happen to miss the bus just go for a walk and sightsee!

In the 1900s, a gas station was located there, too. Today it is replaced by pavement leading to the park. On the crossroad of the Avenue and karmelicka Street there was a hackney stop. now, we can find it, but on the Main Square.
