WHEN TO RENEW

If you are over the age of 21, your driver license expires every five years on your birthday. Those under the age of 21 have until 20 days after their 21st birthday to renew their license.

You may renew your license at any time before your license expires. The state of Colorado does not offer a grace period following expiration. While there are no late fees

if you fail to renew your license on time, it is illegal to drive once your license has expired.

HOW TO RENEWEach state has its own unique renewal process. In the state of Colorado, you have the option of renewing online, by mail or in person at a Drivers License Office. Heres what you need to do.

RENEWING ONLINE

To renew your license online, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

You are between the ages of 21 and 65. Your most recent license renewal was not done online or by mail. Your license is not tied to an immigration document. You have no medical restrictions on file. Your Social Security Number is on file with the DMV. You have no outstanding judgment or warrant on record. You have no returned check on file. You are not required to pass a written exam prior to renewing.If you meet these eligibility requirements, you may renew your driver license online by going to the Colorado DMVs License Renewal site (https://www.colorado.gov/vroom/renewlicense/index.jsf).

Before you do so, you will need:

Either a Visa, MasterCard, or American Express credit card.

A valid email address.Your license will take up to 30 days to arrive in the mail.

RENEWING BY MAIL

If you are eligible to renew your license via mail, you will receive a renew-by-mail application 90 days prior to expiration.

If you have not received one in this time period, you may check your eligibility by going to the Colorado Department of Revenues Check Eligibility App (http://www.renew-app.state.co.us/checkeligibility.asp). If you are approved, you may download and print out your application.

Once you have completed your renew-by-mail application, you must mail the form in along with a check for $21 to the address listed on the application.

Your license should arrive within the next 2-3 weeks.RENEWING IN PERSON

To renew your license in person, you must visit a DMV office along with the following:

Your current driver license. Your Social Security Number. Proof of Residency. Cash, check or money order in the amount of $21.00.You may be required to take a vision test, have your fingerprints taken and be photographed.

After youve completed the preceding requirements you will be issued an temporary license valid until you receive your permanent license in the mail.

In order to legally drive in the state of Colorado you must have a valid drivers license.

To be issued a Colorado Drivers License you must present the following:

Full legal name Identity Age - You must be over the age of 16 to receive a drivers license in the state of Colorado Lawful presence in the United States.

Residence (Utility bill or credit card statement issued within the last 90 days) Pass a vision exam. Pass a written exam, which includes signs tests. A practice test may be found here:

Pass an on-street driving exam. Note: If you are over the age of 15 you may receive a Learners Permit, which allows limited driving privileges.

If your driver license is lost, stolen, or destroyed you will have to go in to any DMV Office in order to replace it. You must also:

Bring in at least one form of identification Pay a replacement fee (For a first replacement, the fee is $7.50. Any further replacements will cost $14.00)

If you are out of state, you have the option of replacing by mail. Follow these steps:

CHANGING THE ADDRESS ON YOUR COLORADO DRIVER LICENSE:To change the address on your Colorado Drivers License you must:

Jot down your new address in the space provided on the back of your existing license. Print out or stop by a driver license office and pick up a Change of Address Form (DR2285):

When completing the form, make sure, if you are a voter, to fill in and sign the appropriate boxes to ensure your voter registration address is switched to the new district.

CHANGING THE NAME ON YOUR COLORADO DRIVER LICENSE:If you are get married, divorced, or otherwise change your name you must update the information on your Colorado driver license.

To change your name you must:

CHANGING THE ADDRESS AND NAME ON YOUR LICENSE

To be issued a Colorado Drivers License or Identification Card, you must prove the following elements:

Your full legal name Identity Age Lawful presence in the United StatesThe list below shows the documents that you may use to prove each of these elements. In some cases, a single document may prove all four elements. However, it may be necessary for some applicants to provide multiple docu-ments in order to prove all the required elements. All documents presented must be certified originals or certified amended originals or true copies certified by the issuing agency.

If you can not prove each of the required elements with the documents set forth in the list below, then you may request to go through Exceptions Processing in order to prove the required elements with additional/alternative documents. All applicants will need one document to prove their residential address. A parents proof of address indicated on license is acceptable for any persons under the age of 18.

Your license may be suspended for a variety of reasons. Some situations are clear, while others are subtle; therefore its important to keep yourself informed. In this guide, youll find information on the steps necessary to reinstate your license in Colorado, no matter what your violation was.

DRIVING WITHOUT A LICENSE OR WITH A SUSPENDED LICENSE IN COLORADO MAY INCUR FINES, MISDEMEANOR, OR EVEN FELONY CHARGES.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE - DUIDriving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol will result in suspension of your driving privileges for a period determined by the number of similar violations and the time between violations. A suspension due to DUI can result in three months before a reinstatement can be made if its your first offense. Thereafter, you may apply for a probationary license.

Additional DUIs may result in a license suspension for several years.

TO REINSTATE YOUR LICENSE YOU MUST:

LACK OF AUTO INSURANCEColorado requires that owners of motor vehicles maintain a minimum level of insurance. Failure to have adequate insurance on your vehicle may result in suspension of your driver license.
