    INTRODUCTION

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve was one of the first areas of tropical forest in the world to receive legal protection. The rain forest covering the tallest hill on Singapore Island was initially conserved probably some time in the 1850s in an effort to protect the local climate during a period of intense deforestation (Corlett, 1988). In the 1880s Bukit Timah was gazetted as a Forest Reserve. Some 70 ha or so of forest remained by 1951 when Bukit Timah was made a nature reserve. More recently secondary forest around the core area has been added bringing the total reserve area to 164 ha. Being easily accessible, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve has been visited by many botanists and is well known botanically compared to many areas of tropical rain forest. However no complete list of the

vascular plants of the reserve has been published. We have compiled the current list, wherever possible, citing voucher herbarium specimens. Records from several other publications are also cited. A number of these from the two-hectare plot set up by the Center for Tropical Forest Science and the National Institute of Education (LaFrankie et al., 2005) refer to species not previously recorded from Singapore. We have put these in the list in brackets as they require further verification. Unfortunately the name ‘Bukit Timah’ has not been used just for the hill itself, but the general vicinity of the hill and often as a shorthand for Bukit Timah Road, a major thoroughfare from the city to this part of the island. Therefore specimens with brief notes on collecting locality may refer to Bukit Timah when the collection was not from the hill. We have tried to find reliably localised collections, but some of the old specimens may not in fact be from what is now the Nature Reserve. However the forest has been isolated for a very long period and it is unlikely that many records are erroneous. We have not attempted to include non-forest species such as weeds and ruderal graminoids from various clearings and disturbed areas around the Nature Reserve. Non-native species listed are restricted to Clidemia hirta, the only alien to successfully invade the undisturbed primary forest (Teo et al., 2003), and albizia (Falcataria moluccana, formerly Paraserianthes falcataria or Albizia falcataria) a very fast-growing exotic tree, and the cempedak (Artocarpus integer), doubtless a relic of cultivation, both recorded from the CTFS plot (LaFrankie et al., 2005).

VASCULAR PLANTS OF BUKIT TIMAH NATURE RESERVE

The checklist includes 1,047 species of vascular plants (see Table 1). This means that, making allowance for the more dubious records, the forest flora of Bukit Timah exceeds 1,000 species. In addition to this high species richness, Bukit Timah is important because many species have been described from specimens collected from the forest. The trees Artocarpus hispidus, Beilschmiedia kunstleri, Mangifera subsessilifolia, Diospyros styraciformis, Aporosa bracteosa, Calophyllum wallichianum var. incrassatum, Calophyllum rufigemmatum, Gardenia elata, Palaquium microphyllum, Ryparosa hullettii, and Syzygium ngadimanianum are all typified from Bukit Timah collections. The climber species Coptosapelta parviflora, Dioscorea tenuifolia, Erycibe leucoxyloides, and Fagraea ridleyi have Bukit Timah type specimens, as does the bamboo Soejatmia ridleyi, the terrestrial herbs Amomum hastilabium, Vrygdagzynia lancifolia, and Zingiber puberulum, and the epiphytes Dendrobium flexile, and Platycerium ridleyi. Two terrestrial fern taxa, Tectaria griffithii var. singaporeana, and Bolbitis ×singaporense, and the aquatic hybrid Cryptocoryne ×timahensis also have Bukit Timah as type localities. Table 1. CHECKLIST OF THE VASCULAR PLANTS OF BUKIT TIMAH NATURE RESERVE

This checklist is alphabetically arranged according to family name (with the family assignment following Turner, 1995), then alphabetically arranged according to the species name. The accepted species name is in bold italics, and the synonym(s), if any, in italics but not bold. The specimen details follow the species name and synonym(s), including the name(s) of the collector(s), herbarium acronym in parentheses (mostly the Singapore Botanic Gardens Herbarium, SING, or Herbarium, Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, Department of Biological Sciences, National University of Singapore, SINU), and date of the collection. Names in square brackets represent records from the literature for species that have not been previously verified as occurring in Singapore. Acanthaceae Staurogyne griffithiana (Nees) Kuntze J. F.
