experiencing tremendous growth right now. With that growth there have been a large number of new members getting thrown into work. Whether you are new to the job or have been doing it for a long time this is a profession you need to keep learning.

Jay Glerum was a rigging instructor who gave a dozen rigging classes at Local 80. In Jay’s book, “The Stage Rigging Handbook”, he talks about systems. Almost everything we do can be talked about as a system. Cell phone, email, and newsletters are all communication systems. In our jobs, the more systems I know and can use makes me more valuable to the producer. All members should take advantage of trainings, demos, and education you can.

Coming up after the October General Membership meeting will be a demo from JL Fisher. Fisher has a new system for operating their dollies. They will have some dollies at the hall for members to look at and try.

Sunday, October 8 there will be a techno crane class. The class is being done with the Society of Camera Operators. This will be a great class giving grips a chance to push a crane around while working with a camera operator and focus puller.

On that same day there will be a new camera movement system on display for members to see. It is a wireless camera sled that move on its own monorail, track system. The sled is capable of moving from 0 to 60 in 3 seconds.

Coming up in the next couple of months at the Local will be rigging classes. These will include hands on as well as theory. The classes are helpful for those grips interested in improving their rigging knowledge as well as those interested in taking the ETCP Rigging Certification.

Fourth quarter dues ($220.00) are due not later than

September 30, 2017. If you are planning to mail yours, keep in mind that the postmark determines whether or not they are timely; merely having your check sitting in a mailbox that afternoon doesn't count.

It is extremely important that any injury you receive

at work is promptly reported to your employer. If an injury is serious enough cause you to lose more than a day of work, it should also be reported to the Local.

When you report an injury to your employer it helps to protect you by creating a paper trail that substantiates any necessary claim that you might later need to file for medical care or lost wages. Reporting any significant injury to the Local will help to establish a record which, in addition to providing a back-up paper trail, may then be used by the union as a tool to encourage employers to comply with state and federal safety standards, and even to improve those standards. This, in turn, helps to protect not only you, but your fellow union members.

When you report an injury at work you should tell both your immediate supervisor and the studio first aid department or your company set medic. Your supervisor should be told as soon as possible. If you are not bleeding or in serious pain, a studio first aid can usually be informed just before you go home, although it is generally better to report as soon as possible.

If you are obviously hurt badly enough to require immediate treatment, first aid is going to fill out (or have you fill out) a report that you will get a copy of. Put your copy in a safe place and keep it there.

If your injury, or suspected injury, is such that you don’t require any treatment before you leave work, report it anyway, and ask that first aid make a note of it. As a lot of Local 80's members and retirees can attest, this can save a huge amount of trouble if the injury turns out to be more serious than you first realized.

It is very important that you do not try to diagnose your injury, either verbally or in writing, when you are reporting something other than an obvious wound, scrape, bruise or swelling. Just describe what happened and what you felt, e.g.:

“I was lifting a bag of ice and there was a loud popping sound from my shoulder – it doesn’t really hurt too much, but I’ve never had anything like that happen before.” Or:

“I was putting sandbags into the jockey box and something strange happened in my lower back. I’ve never felt anything quite like it.”

Do not, not, not, go to the nurse and say, “I think I’ve torn my rotator cuff,” or “I think I may have herniated a disc.”

Even, or perhaps especially, if you are 100% correct in your diagnosis, your saying it is all too likely to come back to haunt you later on. The Workers Compensation carrier for your employer will pounce on such statements in an instant, and try to twist them into evidence that you had been treated for this injury at some previous time and failed to report it. This isn’t idle speculation; the Local gets calls from members going through this particular ordeal quite frequently.

Ready lists have been compiled on a daily basis by

the Local's call stewards for as long as anyone can remember. Each morning a new list is started for each craft with the name of the first member to call in ready to go to work on a moment’s notice.

The members on Ready lists are entirely self-selected. Any member is welcome to call in any time after 4 a.m. and get put on the list. The only rule is that they must be ready to walk out the door when they call.

Ready calls can be for any kind of work, but, more often than not they seem to be on production calls. Perhaps the company has arrived at a location and found that they really should have scouted first, because now they need more crafts service than they have on hand to be able to complete the day’s work in a reasonable amount of time. Perhaps they are sending the 2nd company grip out to scout and someone is needed to replace him or her for the day. Maybe someone called in sick, or with car trouble. (Of course, people working off production occasionally call in sick, too; it just doesn’t seem to happen as often.)

When filling the typical call where there is a reasonable period of time to find people, the Ready list is put aside. At that point the steward turns to the Available list and calls the available members in succession until he finds one who wants (or who is at least willing to take)

the particular call being filled.
