Foreword
This new issue o David Report presents an importantsubject in a somewhat laid back ashion. You may sayconcise instead o long and elaborate. We will not pro-vide all o the answers, but we will on the other hand aska lot o questions and present thoughtul quotes and bestpractise examples. According to us, asking questions isone o the most important ways to acquire knowledge.
The task this time is to present a checklist or sustainabi-lity. Regular David Report readers will probably recognizethe seven steps o the checklist in this issue. Its based onthe Sustainable Wheel, a holistic vision o sustainable de-sign developed by the knowledge company Designboost. As you also may remember the Sustainable Wheel wasthe base or issue no 8 o David Report.
Some ashionistas may say that some o our examples are
not brand new. We say - its on purpose. There are othersolutions than newness when it comes to sustainability. You will be able to read a lot more about this in our nextDavid Report issue this all. Stay tuned.
Welcome to another issue o David Report, and have anice summer!
Our keynote
You have to do right. Today consumers demand trans-parency; Where has this product come rom, what is itdoing to me now and where is it going to?
Sustainabilityis not about doing nothing.
Sustainable design is a success actor that creates att-raction and adds new communicative possibilities or abrand. Which means: sustainable design is not only anidealistic matter, it could also result in new and protablesales. But stay away rom the green-washing, you have toplay the cards correctly and credible.
The questions is - how do a company best conceptualizesustainable design? Or maybe we should not conceptua-lize it at all?
One thing is clear - sustainable design doesnt have to beboring nor ugly any longer.
You will be able to check out some careully picked ex-amples urther on in this report and some relevant ques-tions we have to ask ourselves
WOULDNT WE ALWAYS HAVETO EXTEND SUSTAINABILITYBEYOND MATERIALS?

-How can we use the knowledge and authenticity romhandicrat and local heritage in a global industrial con-text?
- An object without history is ction and an object whichhas not moved on rom history is retrospective. An authen-tic product could be seen as a mix o the two. What is
your product?
- How do we create authentic experiences that has mea-ning and value and a strong sense o cultural identity?

- What is at stake i we make our product compatible withthat o our competitor? Is it a long term negative, a shortterm or no negative at all? Is an eventual negative moreabout prestige and image than real losses? Is compatibi-lity not a true sustainable action?
- How can we make new products connect?
- How can we better create joint platorms (designers, materials, technology etc)?
- How can we connect history with the present and theuture?
- Isnt compatibility also about supporting human to hu-man relationships.

As we mentioned earlier - its important to always have
an holistic approach to sustainability. Otherwise it wontanswer its purpose. The recent ailure with ethanol uelis one good example. Something a lot o people thoughtwas a great substitute or gasoline is now heavily ques-tioned.
Our wind-up
Or look at energy ecient houses. Advanced techno-logy controls the indoor climate; temperature, ventilation, light etc. The problem is that we humans react negativelywhen we are not in charge o our own comort. Couldthese houses at all be reerred to as sustainable when
users are likely to interere with the system in an eort tomake it suit themselves? Sometimes these systems evenhave to be removed because we dont want to live andwork at a place that doesnt respects us as individualswith dierent needs.
What is sustainability to you?
