The April gathering was a regular club night at Bijou, but it was the eve of the 19th North Wales

International Jazz Guitar Weekend at Wrexham and word had got round that American jazzguitarist, Randy Johnston, (guest tutor at the Wrexham event), would be appearing as a surprise

guest. As a result it was packed to the rafters. Randy is the first American to appear at Cheadle Jazz

Guitar Club. With the accompaniment of Andy Hulme and Dave Turner on bass, Randy kicked off

the evening with a couple of standards, "Yesterdays" and a "Blues". They were followed by the ever

popular Brian Lewis who gave a few expertly played solo guitar pieces. Guy Boden was up next

accompanied by Andy and Dave, with his custom seven string guitar, 7th string as the highest string

and tuned in fourths. Guy played "Autumn Leaves and "Tune Up". Another very capable solo

player Dave Faulkner, but this time in a trio setting with Andy and Dave, played "Affirmation" and

"Tenor Madness". Randy and I are old friends having gigged together on both sides of the Atlantic. I

joined him and played Black Orpheus and Days of Wine and Roses. Up next were the guitar trio of

Ray Brooker, Charles Howorth and Tony Cordes, this time accompanied by Dave Turner. They gave

us "Lady be Good" and "Pennies From Heaven". Two new members, Paul & Pat followed, making

their second appearance at the club. Paul faultlessly played two very difficult Classical pieces and Pat

played a Django number. They were followed by regulars Steve Jackson and Keith Eagling with a

couple of standards. Kev accompanied by Andy with D T on bass played "Sunny" & "Yard Bird

Suite". Ian Weir joined me and DT and played "Autumn Leaves". Randy Johnston, myself, Andy and

Dave finished off the evening with a few standards. Another excellent evening of music at Bijou. My

apologies if I've left someone out.Trefor Owen

    >Review of the 19th International Jazz Guitar Weekend at

Wrexham. The North Wales International Jazz Guitar Weekend, April 12 - 14, was again an outstanding success.

The event was held at Glyndwr University, Wrexham and presented by North Wales Jazz, who have

been organizing jazz guitar weekends in Wrexham since 2000. The activities included a concert,

tuition sessions and jam sessions, which took place from Friday until Sunday. The event attracted

students of jazz guitar from all parts of the UK and Ireland. On Friday evening after a welcomespeech the tutorial sessions commenced at 7.30pm with Randy taking the A Group which consisted of

advanced players. Bill Coleman was on hand to provide accompaniment and students were invited to

play, (only those who wished to do so). This was designed for Randy to have an idea of what level he

was dealing with. I took the B Group and, as always in a group tuition situation, there were mixed

abilities. The class was split into two and an extra classroom was provided for the Friday evening and

Saturday morning and for the first hour the more advanced students of the B Group moved to the

extra classroom and Andy Hulme was on hand to give advice and direction. This room was also

provided for students who felt that they did not need to attend every tutorial session and this gave

them the opportunity to jam together and prepare for the lunchtime student jam sessions. I continued

with the students who were beginners in jazz. They all had reasonable facility on the instrument, but

have never improvised over a chord sequence of a jazz standard. In my method of teaching, I choose

the jazz standards very carefully so that the student can get the maximum benefit, and the knowledge

gained can be passed on to other tunes. On this occasion I taught them the melody, chords and

improvisation to Satin Doll. After an hour or so, the more advanced students were invited back into

my room and I dealt with the more advanced issues of jazz guitar. With another hour of preparation

on Saturday morning the students who were beginners in jazz practised Satin Doll to ready

themselves for the lunchtime jam session, and their performance was of a high standard and greatly

    appreciated by the audience.

The Saturday afternoon tutorial session continued after the lunch time jam session with Randy taking

the B Group and I took the A Group. This was continued on Sunday morning and after the Sunday

lunch time jam sessions it all change. Randy took the A Group and I took the B Group.

The Saturday evening concert at Catrin Finch Centre was very well attended and the evening

commenced with Andy Hulme and myself in a duo situation playing a couple of jazz standards to

demonstrate bass line comping, as I had been explaining in class how important it is for guitarists to

be a good accompanists. Andy and I were joined by Paul Sawtell (vibes) and Bill Coleman

(bass). Together we form Shades of Shearing. Yes, no piano! I can assure you that the Shearing

Quintet sound is achieved as one guitar takes on the role of the piano. Amongst the selection of tunes

we played were "East of the Sun" and "April in Paris". The second half of the first set featured our

special guest Randy Johnston accompanied by Bill Coleman (bass) and Dave Hassell (drums), who

played a selection of standards including High Heeled Sneakers. After the interval, Randy, myself and

Andy, accompanied by bass and drums played "Yesterdays" and "All Blues". Randy was then joined

by Paul Sawtell (vibes) to finish off the evening.

Another very successful jazz guitar weekend and I look forward to the next event in October.

B M G (Banjo Mandolin & Guitar) Magazine has beenrevived! Click on the link.http://www.banjomandolinguitar.org/news.htm

This was the only guitar magazine around when I started playing in the 60's. Unfortunatelyit folded with the death of the editor and has now been revived. It was followed by "GuitarPlayer" which was great for jazz in its early years. Then there was a British magazine

"Guitar" which was dedicated to jazz guitar. Didn't last long! This was followedby "Archtop" which was the forerunner of "Just Jazz Guitar Magazine".
