Chaucer Barn is an award winning conversion which is part of an 80 acre farm, bought by the poet Geoffrey Chaucer for his son in the 14th century. Set in four acres of National Garden Scheme approved gardens, which are surrounded by a further 16 acres of parkland.
Just 3 miles from the beach, Chaucer Barn is tucked into a valley in the gentle hills of north Norfolk classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Guests are welcome to roam the farm with its 12th century ruins of Gresham Castle of Paston Letters fame.
The Independent newspaper recently ranked Chaucer Barn above Claridges, Babington House and Le Manoir as the UK’s sixth best wedding venue.

BLANK CANVAS
Chaucer Barn really is different. We try very hard to get as far away from the wedding industry’s ‘one size fits all’ wedding as we possibly can. This is why our motto is ‘like nowhere you’ve been before’.
The idea is to do away with the ‘conveyor-belt wedding’, giving you a blank canvas on which to stamp your own individuality. No two weddings here are ever the same.
There are many different areas, whether inside or outside in which to conduct your ceremony. The same applies for your wedding breakfast which again can be held in a choice of rooms inside the Barn or in the garden or parkland outside, either in a marquee of your choice (or even with no marquee). We believe the choice should be yours not ours!
We invite you to visit Chaucer Barn as often as you like while planning your wedding. Feel free to decorate the barn or garden and grounds yourselves. Whatever inspires you to give the place your own personality.
RECEPTION ROOMS
From top to bottom, the award winning Chaucer Barn oozes style. From the cathedral like space of the main hall to the contemporary chic and massive oak ceiling of the pink sitting room there is a breathtaking individuality to each of the six reception rooms.
The overall feel is one of hip informality. Open plan space in which one can relax and feel at home whatever the season from the way the garden seems to merge with the inside in summer to the winter’s warm cosy feel of being cosseted by English oak, heated Yorkstone floors and four open fires.
BEDROOMS
Of the nine bedrooms no two rooms at Chaucer Barn are the same.
Filled with furniture and textiles brought back by the owner from his extensive travels of the globe, every room is an adventure.
The one thing they do have in common though is spacious luxury.
The bathrooms, with their old world charm, are like travelling back in time with their cast-iron, roll-top baths, polished brass and antique fittings.
GARDENS AND GROUNDS
The four acre garden, approved by the National Garden Scheme and surrounded by sixteen acres of parkland, is a particular passion at Chaucer Barn. Wether you stand at the end of the topiary pyramid forest and gaze down the oak avenue toward the twenty acre wood, stroll through the living willow arch to the wild flower meadow or pause to take in the heady aromas from the herb garden, your only problem will be choosing where to spend your important moments!
Will it be a woodland wedding or will you choose to marry on top of the hill for the stunning view of the parkland? Which of the various lawns where you might want to hold your reception?
Wherever you choose we encourage you to decorate with those little individual touches that will help to make that very special moment uniquely yours.
HOME FROM HOME
For those who live in a large country house with a lawn big enough for a marquee, inviting your friends to your daughter’s wedding at home is a possibility but its not one available to the rest of us... until now that is. The idea behind Chaucer Barn is exactly that; move in and host that perfect country house weekend and spend real quality time with each other.
You get the entire property to yourself for you and your guests to enjoy for the whole of your stay. There is no music curfew, no corkage, no fixed menu or wine list. We get out of your hair to let you enjoy your time the way you want to.
Rather than arrive to an unfamiliar building you will have already settled in the night before with your closest friends and family. By the time your guests arrive for your ceremony the following day you will feel that you are properly inviting them into your home.
At the end of your big day the guests say their goodbyes and you will be left to relax and spend the whole of the next day enjoying the company of your nearest and dearest.
