COMMITTEE REPORTS

Ways and Means Committee Report

By: Kerry Smith

Your Ways and Means Committee is

the fundraising arm of our EWI of Chat-

tanooga Chapter who works hard to

raise monies for scholarships and mon-

ies for our organization. During the

year, we will have many fundraising activities including

raising money through our monthly raffle table, selling

pecans, monthly advertising, encouraging scanning of

Bi-Lo cards to earn our chapter 1% of the purchase, and

several other fund raising ideas.

Our biggest fundraiser each year, though, is our annual

Barnyard Auction and Raffle. This annu-

al event helps raise scholarship funds for single moms

working toward a degree. The scholarships funds are

distributed to The University of Tennessee at Chattanoo-

ga through the Jean Bradford Scholarship, Chattanooga

State Technical Community College and Southern Ad-

ventist University.

Borrowing a tradition from our sister Nashville chapter,

thirteen years ago our chapter began raising money by

auctioning donated items in a lively and fun way. The

2009 Barnyard Auction raised $14,501.98 and had near-

ly 330 attendees! In attendance were some of our sisters

from EWI chapters in Atlanta and Knoxville as well as

many representatives from our member firms and em-

ployees from those same firms.

This year‘s Barnyard Auction will be held October 21,

2010 at 5:30 pm at the Doubletree Hotel. The success of

this annual event depends on the help of all of our mem-

ber firms through your purchase of table sponsorships

and ticket sales, your help in gathering items for our raf-

fle and auction, and the donations of your time and mon-

ey.

As an incentive to get our donations for the auction and

raffle kicked off at our August 10th meeting:

Each donation form that is completed and turned in

at the meeting will earn you a chance to win a $50

American Express gift card!

The member that brings in the most commitments

or auction donation sheets will win a $25 Bi-Lo gift

card!

Thanks for your support of EWI of Chattanooga and

watch for the initial Barnyard Auction email for dona-

tion forms and other information to help you get started.

Melissa’s Organizing Tips for August

Email Management – Reduce What You Receive

My clients are used to hearing me say, ―You are not a victim of your inbox –

you can exercise control over what you receive.‖ Try some of the tips below

to reduce your incoming email volume and let me know how they work.

Clarify to Co-workers When to Email You (and when NOT to)

Talk to your boss and your direct reports. Clarify when a cc: is the best action versus when to

save information for a future one-on-one meeting.

Create a “Disposable” Email Account

There are many providers (Google, Yahoo, Mailinator, etc.) that will allow you to create a free

email account. Use this account for web transactions and purchases.

Stop Email Forwards We all know people who love to forward chain messages, jokes, inspirational stories, and the

like. Go to www.stopforwarding.com, enter in the email address of the perpetrator of your

choice and they will receive an anonymous but very polite email requesting that they cease

their forwarding practices.

For more productivity tips, please go to www.mbgorganizing.com and sign up for my

free monthly newsletter.

Christy Barker

Christy is the representative for The Chattanoogan. It is

Chattanooga‘s only AAA Four-Diamond hotel and boasts

199 guestrooms, 3 eating venues, 25,000 square feet of

conference and meeting space and a full service spa. The

Chattanoogan has won numerous awards for its meeting

and conference facilities and was chosen as the Best of the Best for hotels for

the past two years.

Christy has been with The Chattanoogan for the past 7 years and currently is

the Corporate Catering Manager. She says she has gained a multitude of

knowledge as she has previously worked in many other areas on the property.

She has experienced all aspects of the hotel industry which has led her to being

well rounded when it comes to meeting the needs of guests. She prides herself

in being organized, detailed and thorough. She was recently recognized com-

pany-wide by Benchmark Hospitality with the Award of Excellence for Month-

ly Membership Meetings. Her goal is to ensure a successful event and keep

clients happy and confident that The Chattanoogan is the place to be!

When asked why she became the rep for The Chattanoogan, she said it is be-

cause she saw an opportunity to meet new people and build relationships. She

said it is nice to surround herself with positive ladies who help to provide sup-

port, encouragement, spirituality and friendship throughout her daily life. She

also says ―There are many wonderful women in this group and I have thor-

oughly enjoyed getting to know each and every one of them!‖

Christy, you are a pleasure to know and we appreciate all you do for EWI firm

members.

set by an opponent.

―We had a great season last year under the leadership of Coach Russ Hues-

man and his staff,‖ said Athletics Director Rick Hart.

More than 500,000 directories will be distributed throughout the Tennessee

―We are happy The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Mocs are fea-

Chancellor Roger Brown.

AT&T has teamed up with local businesses to encourage residents to recycle

their previous directories.

―We‘re thankful to AT&T for promoting recycling efforts with this directory. UTC is committed to being a

leading campus in the sustainability movement, and we appreciate the opportunity to partner with a company

that shares this commitment,‖ said UTC Chancellor Roger Brown

BusinessWeek Chooses UTC

For the fifth consecutive year, the UTC College of

Business is ranked among the nation‘s top business

schools by BusinessWeek magazine. Of 3,300 schools

worldwide, only 111 received this recognition.

―Many of our alumni, friends and students have been

quick to express their pride in the College of Business.

A special thanks goes to the College of Business facul-

ty and staff for their contributions in this achievement.

The quality of work that they do and their interaction

with students play a significant role,‖ said Dr. Richard

Casavant, Dean of the College of Business.

BusinessWeek used several criteria to rank business

school programs: a student survey, a recruiter survey,

median starting salaries for gradu-

ates, the number of graduates ad-

mitted to 35 top M.B.A. programs,

and an academic quality measure

that consists of SAT/ACT test

scores for business majors.

UTC named in Princeton Review’s Best 301 Business

Schools

UTC is featured in The Prince-

ton Review‘s latest book, The

Best 301 Business Schools: 2010

ommend UTC to readers of our

book and users of our site,

one of the best institutions they

could attend to earn an M.B.A.,‖ said Robert Franek,

Princeton Review Senior VP-Publishing.

Princeton Review editors said UTC‘s College of Busi-

ness enters an M.B.A. program, ―geared to the working

professional, with classes starting at 5:30 pm.‖ Stu-

dents—a mix of regionally based recent undergrads and
