Millions to participate in Read
Across America Day celebration
WASHINGTON - From the Truffula Trees to the Once-ler and the hoots of the Bar-ba-Loots, Dr.
Seuss and the Lorax will lead the nation’s largest reading event in 2012. The 15th annual NEA’s
Read Across America Day—the nationwide program that helps children discover the joy of
reading—is expected to draw more than 45 million participants on Friday, March 2.
This year the book “The Lorax” by Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, will take
center stage with its message of the importance of preserving the environment. Global
superstars Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Betty White, Danny DeVito and Ed Helms lend their vocal
talents to Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax from Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment and
are all co-chairs of this year’s Read Across America, a first for the NEA program. Zac Efron will
also serve as a celebrity guest reader at a national reading event at the New York Public Library
on NEA’s Read Across America Day, March 2. The actors also recorded Read Across America
PSAs encouraging people to pick up a book and read to a child. “Every year on NEA’s Read Across America Day,
the imaginations of children across the country are ignited when they open up a good book,” said NEA
President Dennis Van Roekel. “‘The Lorax’ is not only entertaining to read, but it also highlights the importance
of protecting our air, land and water. Our students deserve to grow and learn in a
safe, healthy environment.”
The 3D-CG feature Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, an adaptation of the classic tale of a
forest creature who shares the enduring power of hope, comes from the creators
of Despicable Me and the imagination of Dr. Seuss. The animated adventure
follows the journey of a 12-year-old as he searches for the one thing that will
enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it, he must
discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to
protect his world. Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax film is the third feature created by
Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment. The movie opens nationwide
on Friday, March 2 – Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

Inspire Lifelong Readers with
The Reader’s Oath
I promise to read
Each day and each night.
I know it's the key
To growing up right.
I'll read to myself,
I'll read to a crowd.
It makes no difference
If silent or loud.
I'll read at my desk,
At home and at school,
On my bean bag or bed,
By the fire or pool.
Each book that I read
Puts smarts in my head,
'Cause brains grow more
thoughts
The more they are fed.
So I take this oath
To make reading my way
Of feeding my brain
What it needs every day.
Chattahoochee Hills Library Celebrates Reading
As part of National Reading Month, Judy Henderson, Chatt Hills’ favorite
Librarian (and world’s most tireless volunteer) announces that volunteers
from our library will participate in World Book Night on April 21 which
will provide 40 books for middle school aged children in Chattahoochee
Hills. These books will be given out one Saturday during the CH Little
League ball games. For more information: www.worldbooknight.org
Did You Know . . .
Our library opened by volunteers on March 18, 2006 with
donations of books from the community and a collection loaned to
us by Atlanta/ Fulton County Public Library System;
The Library is free, open to everyone and managed entirely by
volunteers and through donations;
The library contains: 3439 Youth, 1763 Children's, and 12,138
Adult and 289 Audio books;
There are several Caldecott and Newberry Award winning books;
and . . . there is no other city in the world that has such a
treasure! (Editor’s note: OK, the last line is just my opinion but I am certain you will agree!)
“We are thrilled to be partnering once again with NEA on Read Across America and couldn’t be happier that
‘The Lorax’ is being featured this year,” said Susan Brandt, Dr. Seuss Enterprises President. “Not only are we
emphasizing the importance of reading, but also teaching children
the importance of caring for the environment.”
The book “The Lorax,” was first published in 1971 and foretold the
desolation and emptiness created when nature is consumed without
regard for its preservation or restoration. Many say the book was
ahead of its time. Readings of “The Lorax” book and its
environmental messages will be prominent in this year’s Read
Across America celebrations happening in schools and libraries
around the nation.
“This national celebration is not just about one hour or one day of
reading, it is about cultivating a lifetime of good reading habits that
will translate into academic success,” said Van Roekel. “NEA’s Read
Across America brings students, parents, educators and the entire
community together to share the joy of reading.”

To Share or not to Share . . . Conversations with a Chili Champ
by Melea Brett
As a former Chili Cook Off winner, I spoke with newly appointed
“Chatt Hills Chili Champ” Chris Marks to see how his recipe
differed from mine. I have known Chris for several years . . . we
have hired him to paint my living room, he has eaten at our home
and we attend the same church. All of which led to my surprise at
how less than forthcoming he was with his recipe. (Maybe I am a
sore loser—you can decide.)
Below are Marks’ comments I received in an email regarding his
award winning chili. My concerns are in colored italics:
“I suppose I'll give up a partial ingredient list and offer some techniques
that I may or may not have employed during the preparation of my chili.
This for Traditional Southern "Eating Chili," (I ask, “Is there anything
other than ‘eating chili?’”) it is not pretentious, its flavors speak for
themselves. It bears no secret ingredient: no cocoa powder, peanut
butter, or coffee. But you do need to cook with love. Ingredients may be
as follows:
Ground Chuck, Onion, Bell Pepper, Tomato Paste, Tomato Sauce, Diced
Tomatoes, Diced Tomatoes with Green Chili's, White Wine, A1 Sauce,
Vegetable Oil, Worcestershire Sauce, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder,
Ground Cumin, Chili Powder, Paprika, White Pepper, Garlic Salt, Parsley,
Salt, Beef Broth, Chicken Stock, Beef Bullion, Kidney Beans, Jalapenos,
Cayenne pepper, Texas Pete and Frank's Red Hot Sauce
I cannot confirm, nor deny that I used the following methods:
Chop Vidalia (Sweet), Spanish, and White Onions and then sauté them in
vegetable oil with white wine and A1 sauce. Brown the ground chuck
with some (not all) of the onions then drain the grease. Start adding the
other ingredients the way you know how to make chili.
The longer it cooks the better it will be. Cook it the day before you
intend to win your competition. Then the next day, bring it to another
simmer. Leave it alone and go out and run 2.2 miles. (My thoughts here:
“Run 2.2 miles? That makes the difference? Can I watch re-runs of
“Downton Abbey” and get the same results?”) Return to the simmering
chili, stir and tweak until you figure there is nothing else you can do.”
So, there you have it – the recipe for what may or may not be
award winning chili. In the spirit of culinary education, I may or
may not be willing to try a few of these techniques. But for now I
say, congratulations, Chris -- I will be ready for you next year!
First Friends and Fixins’ is a hit
The first Friends and Fixins’ event was held
on February 25th at the Chattahoochee Hills
Fire Station with a Chili Cook-off as the main
focus for the
evening.
Residents from
all over the
city brought
their very best
recipes hoping to win the coveted title of
“Chatt Hills Chili Champ.”
Chris Marks was selected as the winner
while other competitors made their
arguments with the judges as to why their
submission was better. Judges Alan Merrill,
Ronnie Lyle, and Alex Hill stood in
agreement that Marks’ chili was indeed the
best. Following the judging, the real fun
began as everyone helped themselves to all
the varieties of chili, homemade breads,
toppings and desserts they could handle.
Friends and Fixins’ is quarterly dinner event
for residents and friends to gather for no
real reason at all! It is a wonderful
opportunity to visit with old friends and
meet new neighbors – and perhaps, come
away with a
new recipe! It
is simply
Friends,
enjoying their
favorite fixins’.

Rainy forecast cancels Saturday’s first “Field of Dreams Day”
Volunteers planning to be at Rico Park this Saturday for a work day can put away their
tools until March 10. Due to a rainy forecast, the work day for March 3rd has been
cancelled. There is still much work to be done in order for the field to be ready by
Opening Day of the Chatt Hills Ball League but organizers are confident
that everything can be accomplished on the two remaining scheduled
days.
This ball park is a gem for the children of Chattahoochee Hills --Won’t
you help support making it a true “Field of Dreams?”
Make a Print & Apps
Submitted by the Serenbe Photography Center
Have you ever wished for a nice size print of a photo on your iPhone or iPad? During the last print event --
someone made a gorgeous print of the Eiffel Tower -- from their iPhone! This Saturday, March 3, stop by the
center to make a print and pick up a handout of our favorite photo apps. The photo
above was printed at our last event. This is a shot by Bess Heiberger. Bess is a
member of our photography group. We meet once a month -- the second Tuesday.
In just a few days we will have an announcement of a juried photography exhibit
for members only. There is no entry fee -- but you must be a member to enter. The
juror is John Lawrence of LaGrange College. The exhibit will hang at the Cochran
Gallery in LaGrange in June -- opening reception is June 3. So make a print, join the
group, enter the exhibit -- fun!
Our second annual Open Competition is coming up! Get your team together now
for March 31. This was great fun last year--and many photographers from all around Atlanta came to Serenbe
for a beautiful day. If you did not have the opportunity to attend our first Collectors' Guild event last Friday,
you still have a chance to stop in to see the prints. Our prints are part of the Jeffrey Goldstein collection that is
also on display at Jackson Fine Art. All sales of prints at SPC are through Jackson Fine Art. If you do decide to

purchase, please let them know at Jackson that you are from Serenbe or saw the prints here -- we will receive
20% of those sales. Buy a piece of history and help support the photo center! We appreciate the opportunity
to collaborate with Jackson Fine Art.
Providence Church Unplugs for Lenten Sundays
Dr. Gene Tyre has issued a challenge to the members of Providence Baptist Church – Unplug your technology
each Sunday. That’s right: no television, no texting, no Facebook, no Twitter. Historically and Biblically
speaking, “fasting” has been associated with food. More specifically, it is going without food for a specified
amount of time for spiritual reasons. “In today’s world, I think we can all benefit from fasting in a different
way -- We all need to ‘be still and know,’” says Tyre who has pastored the church since 2005.
Of course, there are times when members will need to use their telephones but they are encouraged to
evaluate the importance of specific calls before making them. Is that phone call something that can take place
on Monday? Is it really necessary to remind someone that a certain show is on television? Can members
attempt to make plans for Sunday dinner on Saturday instead of calling each other after church?
Citing that this challenge isn’t exclusive for Providence members only, Tyre encouraged members to share the
idea with their friends and families through Chattahoochee Hills and beyond.
“There are thousands of ways that technology makes our life easier,” says Tyre, “but just for a while, during
this Holiest of seasons, I hope our church members will rise to this challenge. Only God can know what good
may come of it.”
Mayor to give “State of the City” address March 6
“Ask the Mayor” feature to run in Reader
During the regularly scheduled city council meeting on March 6, Mayor Tom Reed will give his first “State of
the City” address. The meeting begins at 7PM at city hall. Among other things, Reed is expected to address
the city’s budget issues and amendments that have been made to it since January. Council meetings are a
great way to keep abreast of the management of our city – make you plans to attend!
Mayor Reed has also agreed to assist with a new feature that will begin running in the next issue of The
Reader. This new “Ask the Mayor” feature will allow citizens to submit questions to the Mayor via our web
address. Each week, a question will be randomly selected, answered by the mayor and published in an
upcoming issue. Questions may be sent to [email protected].
Note: The Reader staff will consider all submissions but reserves the right to accept or deny questions should they be
considered inappropriate.
