Kulbach Reinhard Male 1846 1848 Traveling Multiple Steward Maitre d'Hotel DF4/2/1/28: Diaries, Journals and Address Books of
William Cavendish,6th Duke of Devonshire 1811-
1959, CS2/271/0, CS2/25/38, 53, 54, 59, 61-65: 2nd
series correspondence
Reinhard Kulbach was hired in
1846 to be the Maitre d'Hotel at
Devonshire House, despite
having a bad reputation in Paris.
From August 1846 until May 1847
he accompanied the 6th Duke on
his travels abroad, and fell in the
sea on the journey to Capri
during a storm. In 1847 he was
put in charge of the Duke's wine
cellars, taking over the
responsibility from Mr Wilkinson.
In 1848, Kulbach was dismissed
when his son accused him of
mistreating his children and
keeping a house of prostitutes in
Berkeley Square. He eventually
admitted to the accusations and
was allowed to move back to
France on the pretence of family
business.

Of William Blagden. ""The
accounts for Chiswick House
show regular payments from at
least 1824 for food for an
elephant, birds (including a
cockatoo and gold and silver
pheasants), and a monkey. From
1820 John Leggrove was paid for
food for the elephant as well as
an annual salary of £35 and by
1828 he was described as
keeper. The elephant had died in
1828 but Leggrove continued to
look after the rest of the animals
at the same salary (which never
varied throughout his career). In
the early part of 1836 the
menagerie, such as it was, along
with John Leggrove was
transferred to Chatsworth where
the collection of eagles, owls and
water fowl were accommodated

Robert Meynell was the 6th
Duke's valet for at least 27 years.
Meynell accompanied the Duke
on his travels abroad, during
which he was injured on several
occasions. Meynell features
frequently in both Joseph Paxton
and the Duke's letters and
diaries. Most of these make
reference to his drinking, smoking
and gambling. In 1844 he
involved the Duke in an awkward
situation when Meynell 'sent for a
woman' at an inn in Derby, to
which the innkeeper took offence.
Meynell called the inkeeper a
fool, and the Duke intervened to
resolve the dispite. He was finally
dismissed in 1851 when it was
discovered that he was in a
brothel in London while in
possession of the Duke's dog
Vio. Paxton went to find him and
demanded that he return the dog.
The Duke then reluctantly
dismissed him and forbade him
from returning to any of his
houses, although he did give
Meynell a generous pension.

In July 1839, George gave a
statement about an incident that
had occurred with a visitor. A
gentleman had asked for the
waterworks at the Cascade to be
switched on, and was splashed
as the water gushed out.
Believing it to be a cruel trick, he
ran down the side of the Cascade
towards George Nockett,
brandishing his 'unusually large
stick' and threatening to beat
George, who pulled a knife in self-
defense. He must have been
forgiven because George was
named as a foreman in undated
list of men and foremen, probably
grouped for general estate work
or to prepare for a specific event
around 1840; Involved in a cart
accident, October 1849; Dined in
Servants Hall during Duke's visit,
1852
