MONUMENT OF VICTORY OF THE RED ARMY OVER NAZI GERMANY Chasm and Emergent Prospect The Second World War is infamous as the largest and most bloodshed war in human history. During this war, Russia suffered an unfathomable 21 million casualties, while Europe witnessed the deaths of 6 million Jews in concentration camps. A wars political outcome is always overshadowed by the aftermath of pain, misery and destruction inflicted on its victims. The monuments intention is to narrate a message of hope by a symbolic contrast between the painful historic outcome of the war with the prospect of a brighter future born from the depths of despair. Stemming from the regional sandstone, this Corten steel monument has a simple clean geometry exterior, sharing little of its eventful interiors. The monuments’ internal intricacy is designed to resemble a deep trench symbolizing the rift and loss of humanity along with the complexity of its outcome. This dichotomous difference between interior and exterior represent the contrast between the serene prewar atmosphere and the turmoil during it. The monuments circulation depicts the narrative of the war. While ascending to the vantage point the monument slowly reveals the contradiction of its own chasm with a horizon seen from the top. The chasm itself is not evident on entry. Only upon full descent of the staircase is the rift revealed. Inscribed on both sides of the internal walls are the symbols of the Russian Red Star juxtaposed across the Jewish Star of David. The views created between and through these two symbols, portray the close link between the Jewish nation and the Russian Red Army. It is a link of gratitude and of fate shared. Crossing the chasm by a bridge, the visitor can sense a simultaneous hopelessness of war with an emerging prospect of hope towards the ocean in the west. The monument is situated to capture the sunset, the very same sunset that symbolizes the descent of the injustices of war and the ascent of hope and peace for generations to come.
