    Presidential Ramblings:

    Greetings TSers!

Easter has been and gone, meaning its now well and truly motorsport season!

Seth, Lona, Tim and I competed at the Southern Districts Khanacross on May 1, with good results in the Suzuki Swift

challenge! Seth placed 15th and 1st in class, Tim 27th and 2nd in class, with myself and Lona coming in 36 and 37 th. It

was a fantastic day bar the weather. Cold, windy and raining - the Lanac Park special!

The Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally was held over the weekend, with some pretty impressive results from the Subaru

community. Results are not yet final, however WRXs have dominated the top 5, coming in 2nd, 4th and 5th.

Congratulations to all of the finishers and commiserations to those who had to withdraw, both in the 3-day event

and the SARC component. As some of you may have seen in the media, there was a major crash on Saturday

afternoon a Porsche left Crows Nest Rd at a very high speed and hit a tree. Both the driver and co-driver had to be

extricated from the car and air-lifted to hospital, where competitors were told on Saturday night that they were in

an extremely critical condition. Weve since found out that the co-drivers condition has been improved and is now

serious, however the driver is still critical. Our deepest thought and prayers are with the crew and their family and

    friends.

Seths birthday cruise in April had a small turnout but was a great afternoon from what Im told! The usual Sunday

Drivers on the road and a bit of weather didnt dampen the TS spirit. We also had a great turn-out at the Fast and

the Furious 5 movie and dinner night. It was great to catch up with some members weve not seen for a while, and

    the usual crowd.

Our next event is Trevs Special at the Marksman Indoor Firing Range this Friday at 7pm. Please confirm your

attendance ASAP in the coming events thread. The next committee meeting is this Wednesday (June 1), 5.30pm for

dinner and a meeting at the Royal Hotel, Kent Town. All members are welcome to attend. Our AGM is currently

pencilled in for Saturday the 9th of July at 6.30pm for the meeting and then dinner this is still to be confirmed, and

we will advise you as soon as it is.

    Til next time,

    Chris

Fast Facts: 2012 Subaru Impreza Revealed

The new 2012 Subaru Impreza was revealed at the

New York Auto show this April. So far it has

    received mixed opinions from commentators,

ranging from populistand as bland as possible to

a more aggressive car sporting design ideas that

we previously saw in the Impreza concept. Why

not jump on the forums and let us know what you

    think?

It has a new 2.0 litre four cylinder horizontally

opposed Boxer engine that still produces 110kW

and 196Nm of torque but with significant

improvements in fuel economy which should make

it more appealing as a daily driver over the current

Impreza which sits at 8.9L/100km (manual).

The new Impreza also includes a six-speed manual gearbox or a Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable

Transmission) that is claimed to provide smoother performance and greater efficiency by eliminating the need to

shift gears and preserving the vehicles momentum. The CVT gearbox can be run in automatic mode or 6-speed

manual mode using flappy paddles. For more details and a demonstration video of how the CVT works head over to:

    http://www.subaru.com/engineering/transmission.html

The AWD system used also varies depending

on the gearbox chosen. If you go for a

manual the car will utilise a Viscous-

    coupling locking centre differential that

defaults to a power distribution of 50/50

front and rear but can push up to 100

percent of power to either end when

required. If you choose the CVT you will get a

different system called Active Torque Split

    AWD that utilises an electronically

    managed continuously variable transfer

clutch which will constantly manage the

distribution of power based on the driving

conditions. Under hard acceleration it has

the ability to send up to 100% of available

    torque to the rear.

With improvements in the materials used in the interior, a larger cabin area and flat folding rear seats in the

hatchback, next years Impreza should also be a more enjoyable and practical car to drive.

    CHASE THAT FEELING

    Previously on....

Mount Alma Mile - Saturday 2nd

    & Sunday 3rd

    April

April kicked off with The Mount Alma Mile. This was the third running of the event and was held over two days in the

beautiful Hindmarsh Valley south of Adelaide. With 150 competitors and a 1.6km track it is the biggest and longest

hill climb in SA but even with the high competitor count if you want a chance to enter you better be quick off the

mark as the first 100 entries were received with 4 hours of the entry forms being posted on the web. It is for this

reason that the top 12 competitors from the previous year are guaranteed a starting place if they want to take it.

The mount Alma Mile runs a result system that rewards consistency by combining the total times from all runs to

rank competitors. This means that even if you pull of a record breaking time on the first day, if you suffer from

mechanical problems, or driver error that puts you on the wrong side of a fence, you will most likely be out of the

running for overall honours. That is not to say that if you do have the fastest single time you dont get the braggingrights!

With some serious pieces of machinery out there Lona and I felt a little out of our depth at first but it didnt take long

to get into the swing of things and just enjoy the atmosphere of the weekend. We had some minor mechanical

issues with the Suzuki but nothing that stopped us making it to the start line and completing each run. When entries

open next year we will both be ready and waiting to join in again.

SDCC Khanacross Round 2 Sunday 1st

    May

The second Southern Districts Car Club Khanacross was made all the more interesting by the first running of Tims

new Swift Gti, shared with Chris to bring a bit more competition to the underrepresented A Class (cars less than 1.3litres).

It was another busy day with 41 competitors in total and in a sign that winter is on the way we were treated with

intermittent showers throughout the morning. Being a dirt event this made the surface of the track quite slippery in

some places and boggy in others; while this may have slowed the pace slightly it did nothing to dampen the

enthusiasm of drivers or the level of fun!

There were even a couple of WRXs out to play, Lachy McLeay in the black Sti and young Daniel Day in the green

WRX Rally Car. Lachy got a very respectable 5th outright and Daniel would have done a lot better except for 20

seconds of penalties applied after coming into a lane change too quickly and taking out 4 cones!

Once again Steve Knight dominated with his EVO 6 to claim outright victory beating, his previous rounds best time by

    May

The Subarus were out in force for the Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally taking 3 of the top 5 places in the final results,

great job guys! It was made even more exciting by the fact that two of our own club members were out on the roads

as well. Tristan and his co-driver Kate were a force to be reckoned with until mechanical issues forced them out of

contention; and Caitlin who did a great job co-driving for Brian Catt. You guys have my respect and admiration as

the events safety procedures and the excellent work of the medical crews that were quickly dispatched to the scene

both crew members were air lifted to the Flinders Medical Centre. The driver is now stable but still listed as critical, the co-driver is recovering well and is now assisting SAPOL and CAMS investigators.

Team Sooby Movie Night Fast & Furious 5

Vin Diesel and Paul Walker lead the all-star reunion of charactersreturning from every chapter in the franchise. Fast Five does what a

good action movie sequel should do; it goes bigger, louder and

sillier but at the same time builds on its street racing history by

adding a heist movie vibe similar to the Italian Job. To the point

where it has been hypothesised that the script for the rumoured

Italian Job sequel, The Brazilian Job, was reworked to fit in with the

Fast & Furious universe; a universe were not only the road laws are

broken but also the laws of physics and common sense. This movie

may be ridiculous but it knows it is a revels in it.

    Just for Fun:

Its another great month for racing fans this month with the release of

    Dirt 3 on the 25

    th

of May. While there are a good variety of eventsavailable in both single and multi-player, Dirt 3 defiantly pushes the

focus back onto rally racing (now up to 60% of the career mode).

The game now boasts even more cars than ever, including iconic

vehicles from all the sports most memorable eras, ranging from the

1960s to the present day, so there should be no shortage of variety.

There are also now Gymkhana events, made famous by Ken Blocks

antics, and you can even emulate his best moments and upload videos

    directly to YouTube.

While you can still race online in all the standard rally events from the

single player campaign, Codemasters have also added in 4 new Jam

Session party modes to multiplayer to mix things up and keep things

    interesting.

With notable improvements to the graphics and sound, balanced controls and the addition of snow stages Dirt 3 has

been earning some very positive reviews. I am currently waiting impatiently for the copy I purchased online to arrive

but once it does I will be jumping in to see how I go against the rest of the virtual rally world.

    CHASE THAT FEELING

    15

To all sponsors, supporters and fellow competitors, here is a brief story following my debut in the ASP Mount Alma

Mile Hill Climb, for its the third year running.

Dad and I dual entered his rally car, as it is very suited to the demands of the steep hill and high speed turns in this

event, but Dad broke three drive-shafts early in the competition, two in practice and one of them on his first official run.

Southern Districts Car Club do their timing quite differently to most other hill climbs as it is timed accumulatively,

making it very difficult to gain lost time, it is a great system though as consistency is paramount. On my practise run I

took it easy and started to get a feel for the track, recording 50.82 seconds. Following all of the drive-shaft breakages

we decided to change something on the car to reduce the axle tramp off the line. Changing from the stronger STI rear

lower control arms to the standard ones was successful, but I still took it easy on the launches all weekend. My first

officially timed run of day 1 felt smooth, and gave me a 47.43. On the following and last run for Saturday I managed a

    47.11, placing me 6th

outright from 150 entrants. We were all very pleased with this placing, it was at this time Dad

decided not to run on Sunday to conserve the car for me, which I really appreciated, though definitely missed sharing

    the car with him.

Mark from S.A Motorsport Tyres was a great help as usual giving us not only a brilliant deal on a brand new set of

Hankook Ventus R-Spec C-70 soft tyres, but also some ripper bacon and egg sandwiches throughout the weekend. I

have found the Hankook tyres remarkable in their grip levels in previous events such as Collingrove National Hill

Climb Championship, Legends of the Lakes Hill Climb, and a GSR/EVO Club Time Attack at Mallala, and for these

reasons we did not give into the pressure of running slicks in this event as many entrants did.

Sunday morning brought a cold track causing many competitors to be about a second slower on their first run than the

previous afternoon, but I managed to stay in the 47s. On my second run I tried braking a little later into the chicane

causing a minor lock up, but I managed to keep it straight and miss the bollards. On my last run before the top 12

shootout I lost about half a second due to putting my foot down too early in turn 2 causing the car to power slide

beautifully through the corner, time costly but exciting. Dads car is certainly not short of power! With different rules to

last year, there was now a top 12 shootout for 2WDs and 4WDs separately. Simon Orme and I were the only Subies

in the 4WD shoot-out against very quick GTRs, Porsches, and EVOs. I entered the shoot-out in 9th

    outright and Simon

entered in 5th. They ran us from slowest the fastest, putting me before Simon. I managed a 46.64 sec, which was

faster than Simon had run all weekend, he was now worried according to Dad! Ormey put it all together on his run and

recorded a flat 46 second pass, which was very impressive and maintained his 5 th position at that point. Everyone was

pushing it, not allowing me into the top six, for the next shoot-out. I finished up 9 th outright from 150 entrants, I was

very happy knowing that each car in front of me had similar or more power and the driver experience was very high.

The car ran perfectly all weekend (besides the axle troubles) and also sounded even better than previous according to

the spectators that commented, this was thanks to some recent upgrades from Mark at Exhaust Technology.

Gavin from Australian Clutch Service was a great help on Sunday morning supplying us with a pair of billet drive-shafts which we could not fault all day, and the awesome twin plate clutch did its job once again.

I personally really admire Tristan Catfords ability to maintain such a fast pace all weekend to achieve 1st place in the

outright section of the event once again this year.

Congratulations to Sebastian Lip for Winning the AWD Shoot-out, and to Willall Racing for their part in the preparation

and tuning of his Awesome R35 GTR.

I would also like to congratulate Southern Districts Car Club and the

Awesome ASP Team for putting on another great World Class event.
