From the moment you glimpse the iconic pillars of Monticello’s West Portico and the breathtaking displays of summer daylilies, you know you are in the presence of a visionary mind. The author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson dedicated his life to serving our country at its founding as the third United States president, Governor of Virginia and Secretary of State, among other roles. Jefferson was also an architect, scholar, musician, inventor and agriculturalist. Like the

Taj Mahal and Tower of London, Monticello is on the list of World Heritage Sites recognized as cherished pieces of human history and of great universal value.

When you tour the home, his clever inventions abound, from the Great Clock in the hallway that ingeniously marks the days and hours with a pulley system to the polygraph copying machine he designed for his famous letters. This summer, visitors can enjoy seasonal outdoor tours featuring the property’s archaeological discoveries and a look at the experiences of the enslaved people who lived and labored on the Monticello plantation. Those interested in the history of gardening can join the one-hour Monticello Garden Tasting Tour on Wednesdays and Saturdays through October. This new tour now inlcudes a tasting of seasonal vegetables, fruits and edible products from Jefferson’s gardens.

Families will enjoy special house tours all summer on the hour just for children plus the Mountaintop Activity Center with lots of hands-on fun. Monticello also offers Summer Adventure camps for rising third through seventh graders in June and July. Children will have the opportunity to explore science, art and history through games, puzzles and crafts of all kinds.

For more family-friendly fun, come out on July 4th from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. to celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence at the home of the author himself. Monticello’s 54th Independence Day and Naturalization Ceremony, where 3,000 people from around the world have taken the oath of citizenship since 1963, is the oldest continuous naturalization ceremony in the United States outside of a courtroom. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy music by local artists and listen to this year’s featured guest, yet to be announced. James Monroe Highland: Jennifer Jones

While visiting Monticello, make sure you save time for James Monroe’s Highland, the plantation home of our fifth president, James Monroe. Just two-and-a-half miles down the road from Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, Highland is a historic presidential residence and working farm with more than 500 acres of land. Visitors are invited to tour the residence with a costumed guide, explore the amazing boxwood gardens and learn

more about President Monroe and his wife, Elizabeth. Key events this summer include the Independence Day Celebration, July 4, at the home of a Revolutionary War Veteran and the 5th annual Albemarle County Fair from August 4-6, which offers traditional family fun in a historic setting.

For those seeing both Highland and Monticello on the same day, the 18th century Michie Tavern offers the perfect lunch break, located just down the road from Jefferson’s home. This rustic restaurant features hearty Southern fare and servers in period attire.

Another area presidential property well worth exploring is Montpelier, the home of James and Dolley Madison. While visiting the 2,650-acre estate and mansion, you’ll discover historic buildings and engaging exhibits, active archaeological digs, breathtaking gardens and fun, hands-on activities for the kids. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings while learning about the “Father of the Constitution” and the woman who inspired the title “First Lady.” New to Montpelier this year is a 3.9-mile trail linking Montpelier’s Landmark Forest Trails and Grelen Nursery, which is now open for residents and tourists alike to visit and take in the area’s rich natural and cultural origins.

Exuberant painter Jackson Pollock said that art is “all a big game of construction, some with a brush, some with a shovel, some choose a pen.” Whatever your favorite medium, galleries and artwork abound here. Each first Friday of the month, local galleries and other venues displaying works of art open their doors for the popular First Friday Artwalk, and all summer long art-lovers will find exhibits and seasonal collections for their enjoyment.

The University of Virginia’s Fralin Museum of Art provides a sophisticated, high-tech home for the art contained within its historic walls. Exhibits include art from around the world dating from ancient times to the present. In addition to its permanent collection, the museum offers changing exhibitions, accompanied by related programs and publications. This summer’s exhibitions at the Fralin

Museum include the museum’s “Summer of Love” collection and the unveiling of a series of silkscreens by Andy Warhol amongst a collection of his iconic prints. The museum will also be exploring the metaphorical “shadows” of past ideologies that influnce contemporary issues through an exhibition titled “Casting Shadows.”

Another unique local treasure of art is the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia. With a full program of exhibits, lectures, research and education programs, the Kluge-Ruhe collection has a lot to offer the visitor who’s interested in indigenous artwork. In particular, this summer’s exhibit honors Loongkoonan, one of Australia’s oldest living contemporary artists, through a collection titled “Yimardoowarra: Artist of the River.”

A visit to the studio, gallery and printmaking workshop of landscape artist Frederick Nichols is just a short drive north to Barboursville. On the way, stop at Les Yeux du Monde just off Route 20. This summer’s exhibits include a compilation of talented artists and their works, such as Ed Kashi & Don Belt’s “Syria before the Storm” followed by “A Group Show” by Summer Light.

From May 10th-October 28th, enjoy a stroll in the Charlottesville Downtown Mall Area for a free glimpse into the Master’s of Contemporary Art collection put on by contemporary art gallery Graves International Art. The display will include original pieces by world-renowned artists like Salvador Dali, Keith Haring and Andy Warhol. A variety of mediums will be represented in this fun for all display of artwork, Mondays-Saturdays from 11am to 5pm all summer long.

Local artisans are popular in Charlottesville and the surrounding communities. Plan your itinerary with the help of the Artisans Center of Virginia (ACV), the state’s official nonprofit craft organization dedicated to promoting Virginia artisans. The ACV has created the Monticello Artisan Trail, a map of destinations within the city of Charlottesville and throughout Albemarle and Nelson Counties, that designates more than 80 regional artisan studios, craft venues, orchards, vineyards, farms, restaurants, lodging and more.

A diverse range of Central Virginia’s unique traditions and talents are represented on the trail—from a leather artist making

custom personal and equestrian accessories by hand at a studio housed in an old train depot to a celebrated executive chef and decoy carver who hosts guests at a lovely property that includes a studio, a rustic cabin and a trout stream. As you travel along the trail, you’ll have the opportunity to meet some of these artisans and see them at work. Also be sure to drop in at some of the trail’s many businesses and craft venues that display and sell work from local ceramic artists, weavers and furniture makers.

Many of the trail’s most popular destinations are home to agri-artisans and farmers who represent the region’s vibrant heritage. Chat with the owners to learn more about their historic properties and their unique farming techniques. Historical landmarks and scenic byways, waterways and greenways from the Appalachian Trail on the trail’s western edge to the James River to the east are also included on the trail, ensuring visitors of all ages and interests have a delightful time.

This summer, don’t miss exhibitions by local favorites. BozArt is a cooperative group of artists working throughout Charlottesville. Exhibitions are always popping up in different locations, so be on your toes as you may just happen across one on the Downtown Mall! A stone’s throw away from the Downtown Mall, make sure to stop by the city’s Farmer’s Market on the corner of Second and Water Streets every Saturday from May-October. Summer Wine SeasonExperience a wine festival in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains for a picturesque summer outing and a great sampling of our regional flavors. This year, wine festival season began with the Monticello Wine Trail Festival, which brought in over 20 local vineyards to the Downtown Mall. Spring also hosted the Montpelier Wine Festival at the home of James and Dolley Madison.

The season continues with the Valleyfest Beer and Wine Festival on May 28 at Massanutten Resort. The James River Wine and Music Festival is June 11 at Riverfront Park in Lynchburg, just south of Charlottesville. Celebrate summer at the Virginia

Summer Solstice Wine Festival June 25 in Amherst. The Frontier Culture Museum is hosting the Shenandoah Wine and Jazz Festival on June 25 in nearby Staunton. Listen to live music in this quaint and beautifully reconstructed historical farm setting. And enjoy some blackberry wine at the Hill Top Berry Farm and Winery’s Blackberry Harvest and Music Festival on August 6. Getting out to experience the vineyards is easy, as all major roads are marked with the grape “Tours” signs, helping wine lovers navigate their way throughout the country roads. Central Virginia is so picturesque that an unplanned detour can be a lovely way to explore a part of the region you may not have discovered otherwise; for those who like to make an itinerary and stick to it, it might be gratifying to know that many scenic drives offer a cluster of vineyards within easy distance of each other. See the Regional Wine Trail map on page 43 to find your way around the Monticello AVA. We suggest bringing a picnic to your favorite vineyard to enjoy with wine by-the-glass or a bottle purchased from the tasting room. Many vineyards also offer meat, cheese and baguette platters for snacking.

Varieties special to the Monticello AVA include Cabernet Franc, Norton and Viognier. Cabernet Franc, lighter than a Cabernet Sauvingnon, tends to have peppery aromas and can include hints of tobacco, plum or violets. The native North American Norton, another red, is deeply colored and might have notes of coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Viognier is a white variety that gives off floral or fruity aromas but is typically a dry or slightly off-dry wine. Whatever your palate desires—flowery, fruity, smoky or light—you’re sure to find it here.

Jefferson’s Love of Food & Wine

Thomas Jefferson was sometimes called “America’s first wine expert” due to his extensive experimentation in viticulture and oenology. Visitors can check out Monticello’s restored wine cellar in the passage beneath the house.

A platform above the brick floor allows visitors entry to the wine cellar to see what it looked

like during Jefferson’s retirement years in the first part of the 19th century. Try out the model dumbwaiter in the “Crossroads” exhibit to see if you could have transported bottles of wine upstairs to guests without mishap! Afterwards, stop by the dining room to examine Jefferson’s original dumbwaiter, which has been restored to its original working condition.

A spectacular sight awaits visitors in the dining room, which features walls painted a brilliant chrome yellow. The color, which replaced the Wedgewood blue that inspired so many homeowners across the country, is not so new. It was chosen by Jefferson around 1815 to grace the walls that set the scene for many formal dinners, where rice soup, mutton and even a new treat—ice cream—was served. The dining-room restoration was sponsored by Polo Ralph Lauren and marked the first collaboration with Monticello curators and archaeologists with regards to the dining-room ceramics. Excavations showed that, in Jefferson’s retirement years, the family most often dined on pearlware, an English earthenware similar to porcelain but not as expensive. A set of green, shell-edged pearlware now graces the dining room, on loan from The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Virginia is considered the birthplace of American wine. While Jefferson’s desire to have great wines locally available was never fulfilled during his lifetime. Thanks to his unrelenting pursuits we can all now raise our glasses and revel in his dream come to fruition. To ensure that this dream continues, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation has partnered with Piedmont Virginia Community College to create a training vineyard on Montalto, Jefferson’s “high mountain” overlooking Monticello. The University of Virginia is a bastion of tradition founded by Thomas Jefferson, the most popular man in town. Those who are fond of him often refer to him as TJ or Mr. Jefferson. Whether you’re preparing to enter its hallowed halls for a degree or enjoying a weekend in town, here is your guide to local lingo. We proudly cheer on our Orange and Blue, “The Cavaliers” — “Cavs” for short, or “Wahoos.” What’s a Wahoo? Legend has it that Washington & Lee baseball fans dubbed the UVA players

“wahoos” during their fierce in-state rivalry back in the 1890s. By 1940, “Wahoos” was in general use to denote the University students or events relating to them. The abbreviated “Hoos” sprang up later in student newspapers. The area on which UVA sits is called “Grounds,” not “campus,” and freshmen here are called “first-years.” The large, domed building with Mr. Jefferson’s great statue is the Rotunda, and the two-year renovation project of the structure will be advanced enough for this Spring’s graduation ceremonies, reaching completion this summer. It faces a huge grass courtyard known as “The Lawn,” surrounded by historic residences that are still coveted student and faculty residences. From the steps of the Rotunda, you can see “The Corner,” the area located at the intersection of University Avenue and the central entrance to UVA, the Honor Gate. Always abustle, the Corner has a great selection of casual restaurants with college prices and trendy shops that give it a cool vibe.

Charlottesville, named for Queen Charlotte Sophia of England and founded in 1762, is an inspiring setting to call home. Albemarle County’s historic roots extend equally as far. The county is named in honor of William Anne van Keppel. He was the second Earl of Albemarle and served as Governor General of the county from 1734 to 1735. The first county seat was located in Scottsville. In 1761, however, county government was

moved to Charlottesville, which was established as a town in 1762 and as a city in 1888.

One reason Charlottesville has so many transplanted residents is that it’s a small city—just over 10.4 square miles, with approximately 45,000 residents—but it has the trappings of a big one. Musical acts and dramatic performances, fine dining, lovely shops — all are available in abundance. Covering 726 square miles, the county’s population is more than double that of the city, at about 101,000. Both city and county are fascinating places to explore and wonderful locales to call home, and we welcome you!
