The Bulls’ 6-0 shutout victory in game one Tuesday improved their record against the Knights this year to 14-3, including a 10-1 mark at the DBAP. Those 10 wins vs. Charlotte are also a big reason why Durham is tied for the IL lead with 36 home wins, while owning the best home winning percentage in the league at .655. LAST GAME The Durham Bulls kept their season-long dominance of the rival Charlotte Knights going Tuesday night, as four pitchers combined to hold the Knights to just one hit in a 6-0 Bulls win at the DBAP. Starter Ryan Yarbrough led the way for the Bulls’ pitchers, as the southpaw tossed six scoreless frames with one hit, two walks, and two strikeouts. A trio of relievers followed to finish off the shutout, with Adam Kolarek , Jaime Schultz , and Jeff Ames all throwing a scoreless inning apiece. The victory improved the Bulls to a season-high 26 games over-.500 on the year with a 67-41 record, while also raising their record vs. the in- state rival Knights to 14-3. ONE IS THE LONELIEST NUMBER The Durham pitching staff was in complete control throughout Tuesday night’s 6-0 win over Charlotte, with Ryan Yarbrough, Adam Kolarek, Jaime Schultz, and Jeff Ames combining to hold the Knights to just a single hit. The one hit allowed was the fewest in a game this year for the Bulls, surpassing the team’s two-hit shutout on May 20 in Gwinnett. The one-hitter is also the fewest hits allowed in a game by Durham since Justin Marks’ no-hitter on July 16, 2016. The only blemish on the night came in the third, when DH Jason Bourgeois hit a clean, two-out single to right field. QUICK OUTS = SHUTOUT START LHP Ryan Yarbrough cruised through his six shutout innings Tuesday night, as the Bulls’ starter needed only 72 pitches to fly through half-a-dozen frames. The southpaw recorded a season- low two strikeouts on the night, but also allowed a season-low one hit. The brisk performance served as a solid bounceback from a rare loss in his last start, and moved Yarbrough into a tie with teammate Yonny Chirinos and Rochester’s Aaron Slegers for the league lead with 11 wins. The outing was Yarbrough’s 11 quality start of the year, which also tied him with Chirinos for the high mark on the team. BULLS ALL-TIME RECORD Overall 6,384-6,098 International League 1,446-1,274 SHUTOUT NO. 14 Last night’s 6-0 victory marked the 14th shutout of the season for the Durham the second highest total in the IL trailing only Pawtucket’s 15. The 14 blankings are already the most shutouts in a season for the Bulls since the club also had 14 in 2010. The club’s current pace would have them finish the year with 18 shutouts, which would the most in a single season for the Bulls in at least the last 13 years. SCHULTZ SHUTTING THE DOOR RHP Jaime Schultz has missed the vast majority of the 2017 season with a groin injury, but the hard-throwing reliever has looked as good as ever since returning to the Bulls last week. In his two games back with the club, including an appearance last night, Schultz has struck out five over two hitless innings of relief. Combined with his lone outing with the club before the injury on Opening Day, Schultz has now fanned seven of the nine batters he’s retired without allowing a run over three innings pitched. MAGIC NUMBER DOWN TO 20 With the Bulls’ 6-0 win on Tuesday kicking off the team’s final full month of the regular season, it’s now that time of year to begin looking at the Magic Numbers for the division leaders to clinch a playoff birth. With a 15 game lead in the IL South Division that ranks as easily the biggest cushion in the league, the Bulls’ magic number over second place Gwinnett is already down to 20 with 33 games remaining. The next lowest number in the league is Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, withe the owners of the best record in the IL still with a Magic Number of 30 due to Lehigh Valley’s 66 wins in second place. Finally in the West Division, Indianapolis still sports a Magic Number of 33, with second place Columbus just a game and half back. RACE FOR THE TOP Durham’s 67-41 record has them running away with a 15 game lead in the IL South Division, but it would only put them in the middle of a tight race in the loaded Noth Division. Three of the top four teams in the IL reside in the North, including first place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with a 69-39 mark that stands at the best in the league. Second place Lehigh Valley is 3.5 games behind them with a 66-43 record, while sitting in third place in the North (but with the fourth best record in the league) is Rochester at 62-46. 2017 BULLS VS.
