The two teams had met at least once a year every year since 1978-79 before taking a hiatus over the last two years. In 1979-80, the winner of the battle for brag- ging rights in Mecklenburg County was awarded the Hornet’s Nest Trophy and each year since one game between the two schools was dubbed the Hornet’s Nest Game. This year’s meeting will be the 30th Hornet’s Nest Game. Charlotte holds a 26-10 all-time lead in series play, and a 20-9 overall lead in Hornet’s Nest games. The 49ers won the last meeting, 75-68, at Halton Arena as Charlotte’s Leemire Goldwire and Davidson’s Stephen Cur- ry battled toe-to-toe. Goldwire led all scorers with 34 points, thanks to a Halton record nine three-pointers while Curry scored 32 on seven threes, the most by a 49ers opponent in Halton Arena. While the Goldwire-Curry battle stole the headlines (“High Stakes Game of HORSE”, Ob- server columnist Scott Fowler), Charlie Coley’s emphatic dunk and acrobatic reverse layup keyed the Niners second- half push to the seven-point win. Charlotte has won 10 of the last 12 meetings, with both losses coming at Davidson. Charlotte is 6-4 all-time at Davidson. BUSY BACKCOURT: Guards Derrio Green (36.7) and Jamar Briscoe (35.9) both rank in the top 10 in the A-10 in min- utes played. Both average double figures in points, over 3.5 rebounds and over 4.0 assists. MR. JONES: Senior center Phil Jones posted his first double-double of the year and the second of his career with a 14 point; 10-rebound performance at East Carolina, last Wednesday. He has scored in double figures in three straight games for the first time in his career and is averaging a team-best 7.1 rebounds per game. Jones is shooting .588 from the field, including 80% (16-of-20) over the last three games. He was a perfect 7-of-7 in matching a career-high 16 points vs. Radford. HISTORY: During the American Revolutionary War, British commander General Cornwallis occupied Charlotte but was driven out afterwards by hostile residents, prompting him to write that Charlotte was “a hornet’s nest of rebellion,” leading to a city nickname: The Hornet’s Nest.

DEWHURST’S BAD BREAK: G Charles Dewhurst, who had returned to practice following a medial meniscus tear/surgery, broke his left index fi nger in practice, Dec. 6, the day before he was to make his season debut. The injury will require surgery and will sideline him for another four weeks.

ROSTER NUMBERS: Preseason injuries to sophomore KJ Sherrill and grad student Charles Dewhurst have limited the 49ers depth. Freshman point guard Luka Voncina is ineligible per the NCAA, pending the possible review of additional documentation. Georgia transfer DeMario Mayfi eld is sitting out the 2010-11 season per NCAA rules on transfers. Senior Shamari Spears has been suspended indefi nitely. That has left the 49ers with a nine-man roster, with only seven scholarshipped players. Charlotte played with just six scholarshipped players vs. Gardner-Webb due to one-game suspensions to Shamari Spears and An’Juan Wilderness. Against South Carolina State, Spears and Wilderness returned but Phil Jones served a one-game suspension, giving the 49ers seven scholarshipped players. Dewhurst, who hoped to make his season debut Dec. 7 vs. Winthrop, broke his fi nger in practice Dec. 6 and will be out another four weeks following surgery.

HOT HANDS: 1.000* (7-7) Phil Jones vs. Radford .875 (7-8) Chris Braswell vs. Radford .800 (4-5) Phil Jones vs. Winthrop .700 (7-10) An’Juan Wilderness v. Coastal* Jones’ perfect night was the most fi eld goals made by a 49er without a miss since An’Juan Wilderness went 8-for-8 at Richmond, Feb. 20, 2008. Teammate Chris Braswell went 7-for-7 last year vs. Winston-Salem State.

NEAR PERFECT: Sophomore Chris Braswell (18 pts) and senior Phil Jones (16 pts) combined to hit 14-of-15 fi eld goals in the win over Radford. Braswell (7-of-8 FG) enjoyed his sea-son-high point total while Jones (7-of-7) matched his career high.

A-10 RANKS: Charlotte ranks 2nd in the A-10 in FT% (.723) and 3FG% Defense (.282) and are 4th in 3FG made per game (7.3).

TAKING CARE OF THE BALL: Head coach Alan Major has preached to his team the importance of every possession, in terms of both limiting turnovers and grabbing rebounds. The 49ers, who have had 13 or fewer turnovers in the last three games, are 3-1 when they have less than 15 turnovers and 4-2 when they win the battle of the boards. The 49ers are averaging 9.3 turnovers over the last three games and won the battle of the boards in each.

ALL ON BOARDS: Five 49ers are averaging over 4.5 rebounds per game, led by Phil Jones (7.1) and Chris Braswell (6.4) but ibncluding wing forward An’Juan Wilderness (4.9), reserve forward Javarris Barnett (5.1) and shooting guard Derrio Green (4.7). In addition, point guard Jamar Briscoe pulls 3.8 rebounds.

TRENDS:The 49ers have led at the half in 7 of 9 games (4-3) and led by double fi gures in each of the last three games (2-1). 49ers are 4-1 when they shoot over 40% and 0-4 when they shot under. 49ers are 3-1 when they allow less than 65 points, which includes the last 3 games (2-1).

ALL-TIME BLOCKS:Phil Jones, who tied a Charleston Classic record with 6 blocks vs. George Mason, ranks third all-time with 147 career blocks. He is 30 shy of #2 Jermain Parker (177) and 47 shy of all-time leader Ray Gromlowicz (194). Jones has blocked at least one shot in all but one game and at least two shots six times.

THE LITTLE ENGINE: Sophomore point guard Jamar “Deuce” Briscoe, a 5-10 transfer from NC Central, leads the active roster with a 15.6 scoring average (10th in A-10) and a team-best three games with 20 or more points. He leads the team with 4.2 assists (8th in A-10) and 2.0 steals (2nd in A-10). He scored 30 points in his debut and has scored in double fi gures seven times.

MAJOR SIGNS FIRST CLASS; EARNS HIGH PRAISE FROM PUNDITS:Alan Major wasted no time in making an impact on the recruiting scene, signing a trio of talent in the early signing period to make up his fi rst recruiting class for the 2011-12 sea-son. Major signed 6-4, 185 lb. guard Terrence Williams (Charlotte, N.C./West Mecklen-burg), 6-7; 200 lb. forward E. Victor Nickerson (Atlanta, Ga./Norcross) and 6-10, 240 lb. center Mike Thorne (Fayetteville, N.C./Trinity Christian) to National Letters of Intent. “All of these guys possess high character,” said Major, “and they love the game. They wanted to be a part of this fi rst class here at Charlotte and that’s exciting to us.” “Coach Major and his staff did a remarkable job in a little amount of time making inroads in North Carolina and Charlotte in particular. And then to add Nickerson, who has bordered on that top 100-type player, this is an outstanding class,” said ESPN.com’s National Recruiting Director Paul Biancardi. “What impresses me the most is this class has enormous versatility, athleticism and promising prospects that have a ceiling to grow individually and collectively as a group. It’s an exciting class.”

Terrence Williams (Charlotte, N.C./West Mecklenburg); 6-4, 185 lb. guard Williams, a member of the Carolina Elite AAU team, averaged 24.5 points, 10 rebounds and was named the Mountain Island Regional Player of the Year as a junior last season. The versatile guard added 3.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.4 blocks to earn all-conference honors. “Whenever you can bring in a local product, it’s exciting and we defi nitely wanted a guy from Charlotte in our fi rst class. Now, we hope he’s just the fi rst of many,” said Major. “(Williams) had an outstanding junior season. He’s a well-rounded player who can shoot the ball, handle the ball and he’s a better passer than he gets credit for. At 6-4, he’s got long arms, as well, and has the potential to be a great defender.” “(He’s) a versatile scoring guard who can knock down shots from 3-point range and has a dependable mid-range game as well,” Biancardi said. “Add in his ability to get to the basket and it’s this versatility that will make him a potent scorer in the Atlantic 10.”

E. Victor Nickerson (Atlanta, Ga./Norcross); 6-7; 200 lb. forwardNickerson, who plays for the Georgia Stars, averaged more than 10 points and fi ve re-bounds as a junior in helping Norcross to 23 wins. He has been ranked in ESPN’s top 100 and Rivals.com ranks him at #133 in their top 150. “Victor’s an outstanding all-around basketball player,” Major said. “He has great size and the ability to shoot the ball and pass the ball and he has a great basketball I.Q. He comes from a strong basketball background at Norcross. Someone with that type of well-rounded ability is exciting to bring in.” “Nickerson brings great versatility to Charlotte’s perimeter,” writes ESPN recruit-ing analyst Reggie Rankin, noting Nickerson’s rank as the 17th-best small forward in the nation. “He has great size and length at 6-foot-7, but his skill level is what makes him special. Nickerson can handle the ball, is an excellent passer and has great court vision.” “Victor can infl uence the game without scoring with his passing, ball handling and ability to guard multiple positions,” added Biancardi.

Mike Thorne (Fayetteville, N.C./Trinity Christian); 6-10, 240 lb. centerThorne, who has a 7-2 wing span, averaged 5.0 points and 6.2 rebounds and 1.3 blocks as a junior. Thorne is ranked as the 24th-best center prospect by ESPN’s College Basketball Recruiting. His stock rose during the summer while playing for the North Carolina Force, especially at the AAU Nationals in Orlando, and is considered a player to watch this win-ter. He will help strengthen the Niners frontcourt, which will lose 6-10 senior center Phil Jones and senior forward Shamari Spears “Mike’s one of those guys who grew as a player last summer and it happened in a hurry,” said ESPN.com recruiting expert Dave Telep. “The natural skills were there, but it was his aggressiveness that led Charlotte to offer him a scholarship. He’s the defi nition of a late bloomer, an introverted junior who began to understand what he could do with the game and he cranked it up. Mike’s a long-term stock and one that should pay dividends.” “He could wind up being the sleeper in this whole deal,” Telep told The Charlotte Observer. “Thorne has really improved,” echoed Biancardi. “When you can get somebody who is 6-9 and athletic who works at his game, that’s exciting for Charlotte.” “Mike has a world of potential,” said Major. “The exciting thing about Mike, he has a strong work ethic and a hunger to improve. He has some nice moves in the post and, with his size, he has the ability to be a good shot blocker and someone who can alter shots. We’re defi nitely excited about his upside.”

In the decisive 2nd half, Gardner-Webb shot 63% while the 49ers shot just 29%. With two players in-jured and two serving a one-game suspension, the 49ers went with a limited lineup of just six scholar-shipped players. Once two more had fouled out, the 49ers were down to six eligible players, including two walk-ons. “The bottom line, we need to continue to be tougher on the defensive end,” said Alan Major. “We showed fl ashes, but we need to sustain it.” Jamar Briscoe scored 30 points for the 49ers in his debut (9-17 FG; 8-9 FT) while Derrio Green added 16 points but hit just 1-of-12 threes.

Head coach Alan Major picked up his fi rst collegiate head coaching victory with a 90-81 victory over visit-ing SC State. Senior Shamari Spears led teh 49ers with 25 points. The 49ers used a 12-0 run spanning the end of the fi rst half and start of the second to open up a nine-point lead and its defense, which held SC State to .353 shooting in the second half, made the lead stand up. Chris Braswell and Jamar Briscoe add-ed 15 points each for the 49ers, who shot 46% in the second half. Charlotte led by two at the half after tak-ing its fi rst lead of the game on a puback from Gokhan Sirin with :04 left.

In the 11-point win over ECU, all fi ve starters (Spears 15; Green 14; Briscoe 12; Wilderness 11; Braswell 11) scored in double fi gures as the 49ers offense shot a season high .473 from the fi eld. On the other side of the ball, ECU shot just .364, the fi rst 49ers opponent to be held under 40% shooting. The 63 points are also a season-low for a 49ers opponent. Charlotte enjoyed a 42-34 rebounding edge in what has to be the team’s most complete game of the young season.
