It’s almost impossible to describe the facts about Charlie Chaplin. He was a famous British Comedian actor becoming the greatest pupil in silent film age of the 20th century.

Charlie Chaplin is also the co-founder of united Artist Corporation. This famous comedian died at the age of 88 on 25 December,1977 in Switzerland.

Collected here are some interesting facts about Charlie Chaplin that you probably didn’t know.

Charlie was born on the 16th of April in 1889. Just four days before Adolf Hitler was born.

During his childhood, Charlie became a member of the Eight Lancashire Lads clog-dancing troupe. He worked very hard & he was popular with the audiences. But he was not satisfied with it. His desire was to become a comedy actor.

Tillie’s Punctured Romance (1928), the first feature length comedy film directed by Mack Sennett in which Charlie starred. It was a commercial success and increased his popularity.

Although he was not trained as a musician, nor was he able to read sheet music, he composed about 500 songs for his movies including smile which your are hearing at the moment.

Charlie Chaplin was the film industry’s first international star and he got many offers from various Hollywood studios including Universal, Fox, and Vitagraph. The most remarkable contract was with the Mutual Film Corporation that gave him $670,000 for a year. He was only 26 years old and the highest paid actor in the world.

By 1918, he was best known for directing his own films. Though he started directing his won films early in his career, he continued to hone his craft as he moved to the Essanay, Mutual, and First National corporations.

He was the first actor selected to be on the cover of Time magazine.

“City Lights (1931)” was his personal favorite and remained his favorite for the rest of his life and regarded as one of Chaplin’s finest works which earned $3 million.

Chaplin’s comedic style is broadly defined as "slapstick" and it was considered restrained and intelligent.

In 1940, he made a film called The Great Dictator for which he received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor.

"Limelight", a novel which Chaplin wrote but never intended for publication won him an Oscar award in the best music category.

In the 1950s during the McCarthy "Witch Hunt" - anyone with even the slightest left of center political leanings was branded a 'communist'. Charlie fell into this category and was banned from the US.

His film “A King in New York” was not shown in America until 1973 although it released in 1957.

In 1967 he directed “A Countess from Hong Kong” which was his last film and it was his first color movie.

He had a total of 11 children and 8 of these were with his last wife, Oona O'Neill.

Although he married four times, only his last wife - Oona O’Neill was with him till his death.

In 1972, he received his Honorary Academy Award from Jack Lemmon . It was the first time he had been back to the United States in 20 years.

In 1975, Chaplin received further recognition when he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

Chaplin received many awards and honors in his later life. He was appointed a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. He was also awarded honorary Doctor of Letters degrees by the University of Oxford and the University of Durham.

In December of 1977, Charlie died. On March 1, 1978, Chaplin’s coffin was dug up and stolen from its grave by two men who demanded $400,000 for its return. The men were arrested and Chaplin’s body was recovered 11 weeks later.
