Collaborationtrical safety for kids wasalso scheduled to educateour community’s childrenWednesday, May 2nd.  Intwo back-to-back sessions, for Ebenezer ChristianSchool and home-schoolchildren and then K-6thgraders from Ellsworth El-ementary were taught thedo’s-and-don’ts of downpower lines and the unfor-giving reality of electricity.

Consistent with his phi-losophy of ‘communica-tion is king’, BanksTownship supervisor,Thomas Mann arrangedthat while the portable hot-line trailer, complete withpoles, transformers, fuses, conductors, insulators, me-ters, and other equipmentused to distribute electric-ity was in Ellsworth, hewould seize the momentand take education a stepfurther.  So before the chil-dren got their lesson in thepower of electricity, repre-sentatives from the Con-sumers Power Companyjoined the Great lakes crewto answer questions and re-mind three local fire de-partments of the behaviorof electricity.

“Our big concern for thefire departments as thefirst responders is to em-phasis that if you see theline down stay back, set upa perimeter, wait until weget there and we will getyou where you can do whatyou need to do,” said RickJordan, Area Supervisorfor the Boyne City GreatLakes Energy office.

The joint spokesmen dis-cussed potential problemswith home generators andhow to address them, thetechnology behind powerlines and what to expect, and policies and problemswith firemen removing me-ters as a short cut to shutoff electricity during astructure fire. One of theproblems encountered byfiremen during the recentfire in Ellsworth was thelength of time it took theelectric company to getsomeone out to shut thepower off to the burningstructure, putting fire-men’s lives at risk whowere struggling to save thehistoric Township Hall lo-cated next to the burningbuilding.

“This is basic electricity101,” said Dale Jacob,Boyne City Electric FieldLeader as he encouragedthe firemen to be guards, protecting the public froma downed line rather thanrushing in and becoming astatistic.

BOYNE CITY— Boyne City’s Red Mesarestaurant and the Boyne City-CharlevoixTrail Committee joined forces to raisemonies to pay off the remaining balance ofthe required local matching funds needed tocomplete phase I of the trail on Wednesday,May 2nd.  The restaurant donated proceedsfrom all ‘Daily Special Entrées’ and  ‘Casa

Margaritas’ sold that day to the Trail Steer-ing Committee.   A silent auction and rafflewas also held and three different musicalgroups performed during the 12-hourfundraiser, which brought in almost $7000.

“We are fast approaching our goal,” saidMike Sheean, Boyne City-Charlevoix TrailAdvocate.

With the help of 30 volunteers that sup-ported the party in one way or another,

nearly 300 customers stopped into Red Mesaon Wednesday. “All the downtown stores didbetter business than they usually do on aWednesday in the middle of a quiet season,”said Sheean.

The event was planned and organizedby volunteer Paula Larson, who heard con-cerns expressed by some members of theCharlevoix County Board of Commissionersabout maintenance costs; a topic of discus-sion since it has been determined thatCharlevoix County will own and maintainthe trail. Larson took it upon herself to puta team together to help defer costs for theoutstanding balances and to assist with themaintenance of the trails.  She hopes to con-tribute annually to these expenses throughfundraising.

“My vision is to get a good group of volun-teers to come together yearly to raise fundswhile also working together to maintain thetrail so that the taxpayers will not be respon-sible for it,” said Larson.

Larson and her team are in the early plan-ning stages of two more fundraisers; one inJuly and one in the fall. Although she saidthere is nothing set in stone for the fundrais-ers except the fact that there will be more,Larson was elated over the efficiency and ca-pability of the volunteers who helped withthe Red Mesa event.

The beautiful 14-mile trail that will followthe Charlevoix-Boyne City Road right of waythrough Young State Park and Horton Bayand connect to the Little Traverse Wheelwaynear the Charlevoix Country Club currentlyexists only in the mind’s eye. The trail proj-ect has been divided into three phases.

In 2008, grants were applied for on PhaseOne of the project which will follow theBoyne City-Charlevoix Road for 3.2 milesfrom the Boyne city limits to SpringwaterBeach Road. The grants require local fundsmatches totaling $88,600.  The trail commit-tee had an outstanding balance of $17,512and has been working to raise those fundssince January.

“We put out a request for funds to the bikeclub at the beginning of the year and havereceived about $12,000 from club members,”said Sheean.

The North Country Bicycle Club, whosegoal is to provide ‘rides’ for the community, has members all over Northern Michiganand their office in Boyne city has dedicateditself to supporting the trail.

“I can see the trail being a place for momsto push their strollers, senior citizens towalk their dogs and a place for families towalk safely together,” said Larson.

short term orgreater good?

Dear Dave,I have a problem with impulse

spending. I switched to a debit cardso that the money comes straightout of my checking account, but Istill buy things I know I shouldn’t.Should I stop using the card?

LaurenDear Lauren,First, let me say that debit cards

are great. You can’t spend moneyyou don’t have with them like youcan with a credit card, but you’vestill got to budget carefully and givea name to every single penny ofyour income. Otherwise, you canstill overspend.

When I made the decision to getintentional with my money, I justused cash. It’s hard to spend it whenyou don’t have any on you. It’s atough thing, I know, but you have tomake a conscious decision to startliving differently. You have to getmad at the things that steal yourmoney a dollar or two at a time, andyou have to put your foot down.Enough is enough!

Try looking at your life as a

whole, not a moment at time. All themoments you’re living right nowwill have either a positive or nega-tive effect on your future. I decided Iwanted the greater, long-term good,so I gave up on the short-term stuff. No discipline is pleasant whenyou’re doing it, but as the Bible says,it yields a harvest of righteousness.

Trust me, Lauren. The greatergood is worth the sacrifice. But untilyou make that decision for yourself, you won’t do it.

Daring to dream againDear Dave,I’m 53 and in a position finan-

cially to retire in a couple of years. Iwant to keep working some after re-tirement, but I’m so burned out bymy job that I’m not sure what Iwould do. How can I find somethingthat would light my fire again?

NancyDear Nancy,If you haven’t dreamed in a while,

dreaming becomes an exercise. Ithink it would be a good idea to setaside some time, turn off the televi-sion, and just think about the thingsyou like doing. Maybe you could

schedule a long weekend, just forNancy, and get away somewhere tojust relax, unwind, and think aboutthe things that make you happy.

It’s easy to get out of the habit ofdreaming, but try to find some timethat will allow you to get back thefeelings you had when you were 18and felt like you could conquer theworld. Visit that place in your mindand your spirit, and think aboutwhat you’d aim at if you could do itall over again.

Dreaming is a great thing, but youhave to formulate an idea. Once youhave that in place, you can begin todevelop a strategy for getting there.Make a list of the things you need todo ahead of time to make the transi-tion possible. Would you need totake some classes or save up andbuy some equipment between nowand then? These are all importantissues to address. And check out thebook Quitter by Jon Acuff. It’s a fan-tastic read for folks in your situa-tion. Good luck, Nancy!

BOYNE CITY - At the May 8meeting of the Boyne City Commis-sion amendments to three city ordi-nances were approved to allowchickens in residential areas of thecity, an update on the Kirtlandwood pellet plant was given and apublic hearing was held to discussprogress on the grant for SouthPark Street.

After considering a request byseveral citizens that approachedthe planning commission last fall,an ordinance amendment wasdrafted that would allow people tokeep chickens in residential areas.Amendments to the zoning ordi-nances of the Traditional Residen-tial District, the Rural EstateDistrict and an amendment to sec-tion 6 of the animal ordinance wererequired. Some specifics of theamendments include allowing up to4 chickens, no roosters, no slaugh-tering or dressing of the chickensoutside, chickens must be providedwith a covered enclosure in therear yard and it must be positionedat least 10 feet from adjacent prop-erty lines. The amendments passed4 to 1. “I think we are going to runinto some issues here. I can’t seehow you can possibly have chick-ens and not be offensive to yourneighbors,” said CommissionerLaura Sansom. Mayor Ron Grunch

responded that if the ordinancewasn’t self policing that it could betightened.

City Planning Director, ScottMcPherson updated the commis-sion on progress made concerningKirtland Products. A noise consult-ant, RSG Inc. has been hired andwill begin a noise analysis theweek of May 21. The plant must beat full operational capacity in orderfor the tests to be accurate so theplant will be up and running forthree days. Discussion with theDEQ has taken place concerningplant emissions. Further testingmust be done to see if the plant isin compliance with regulations.Citizen comment came from MarkKowalske,” I appreciate you takingthe time to really research this likeyou are doing,” he said.

Part of the process of applyingfor the Community DevelopmentBlock Grant includes minorchanges to the Community Devel-opment Plan. The grant will be asignificant aid in financing theproject which includes the total re-construction of three blocks ofPark Street in downtown BoyneCity from Water Street headingsouth to Pine Street. City Manager,Michael Cain stated in a memo tothe commission that the “overallplan is still considered current andconsistent with the communitiesneeds and goals,” and recom-

mended that the commission adoptthe proposed plan, which theyunanimously did.

The next regular city Commis-sion meeting is scheduled for Tues-day, May 22 at noon.

The roots of NationalPolice Week reach back to1962, when PresidentJohn F. Kennedy signed aproclamation that desig-nated May 15th as PeaceOfficers Memorial Dayand the week following asPolice Week. In August1981, the Fraternal Orderof Police National Auxil-iary Board voted to holdthe first National PeaceOfficers’ Memorial DayService on Capitol Hill atSenate Park the followingMay. President RonaldRegan sign legislationinto law in October 1984that established the Na-tional Law EnforcementOfficers Memorial Fund, created to raise funds forwhat became the NationalLaw Enforcement Offi-cers Memorial in Judici-ary Square inWashington, DC.  TheMemorial was dedicatedin October 1991 by Presi-dent George Bush, andcurrently bears thenames of over 16,000 lawenforcement officerskilled in the line of duty.

A group called Con-cerns of Police Survivors,Inc. distributes over ahalf million blue ribbonsfor law enforcement agen-cies to tie to their car an-

When someone purchases an itemfrom the vast inventory of new andgently used home improvement prod-ucts at the 9,500 square foot Habitatfor Humanity Restore facility in Har-bor Springs, they not only enjoy hugesavings in price, they are helping tobuild the new home dreams of thefamilies the Habitat organizationhelps each year. It is truly a win-winsituation, the expansion of a visionthat began back in 1976 when Millardand Linda Fuller founded Habitat forHumanity. To date, over 400,000 af-fordable houses have been built byHabitat affiliates, housing more than2 million people worldwide.

Harbor Springs Habitat for Hu-manity Restore Director, Bob By-strom, states, “There were 28Restores in Michigan when westarted this one four years ago.Today there are approximately 50here in Michigan, and over 800 na-tionwide. We offer a wide variety ofhome improvement items, such aswindows, doors, plumbing and elec-trical products, lawn and gardenproducts, light fixtures, paint andmore.”

The inventory also includes a con-stantly changing selection of gentlyused furniture and home accessories.About the only type of item theydon’t carry is clothing, and as withevery Habitat for Humanity Restorein the state, they no longer acceptbox springs or mattresses.

Moms…you just can’t help butlove them.

From the very first momentsof our awareness, we instinc-tively understand that amother’s arms offer protection, reassurance, and support. Whilewe may cause lots of grief formom as we grow, her love re-mains unfaltering, uncondi-tional, and unending. As anyonewho has lost a mother knows, thebond between mother and childlasts well beyond her lifetime.

So it is of no surprise that wehave established a special dayeach year to celebrate the manyvirtues of motherhood. What issurprising is that it took so longto do.

Our modern Mother’s Day wasthe brainchild of Anna Jarvis, who, less than 100 years ago, ac-tually trademarked the phrase“Mother’s Day” and even “sec-

ond Sunday in May.” The apos-trophe’s positioning is some-thing Anna was very concernedabout, wanting to make sure thephrase was a singular possessiveso each family was inspired tohonor their mother rather thanmake the day a broad celebrationof matriarchs everywhere.

President Woodrow Wilsonwas instrumental in the creationof a law making the holiday offi-cial, and Hallmark made sureeveryone knew about it.

Even television has generallybeen kind to mothers over theyears, though never squarely onthe mark.

In the 1950’s and 1960’s, fic-tional roles such as June Cleaver,Donna Reed and Harriet Nelsoncaught the sweet, “apple pie” as-pect of mom. As we movedthrough the 1970’s, 1980’s and1990’s, television moms such asAnn Romano on One Day at aTime, Elyse Keaton on Family

Ties, Clair Huxtable on Cosbyand Patricia Richardson ofHome Improvement reminded usthat moms can also be cool, ca-reer oriented, and independent.Today’s fare tends to lean toward“reality” based formats, withmom’s portrayed perhaps notquite as wholesomely, thoughtthat does point out that there ismore than one reason moms be-came moms after all!

Yet despite a fairly good effort, television has never gotten downto the heart of the mom matter. You see, moms are complexcats…they are all these thingsand much, much more.

So spend some time with theone who brought you up in thisworld this coming Sunday. Stopby for a visit, give her a call, orhold her in your thoughts. Forthe greatest gift a child can give,is letting their mother know thatthey love them too.

A child’s greatest gift

Her children have all grown, she has her time alone

Walks among the memories inside a silent home

And she is standing by, ready to sanctify

The hopes and dreams of others lives

With all that she has known

Provide encouragement, strength and sentiment

A quiet dignity she has learned and won’t forget…it’s Mothers Day

While there is joy and laughter in her heart

It’s so much different than she imagined at the start

Lullabies, reasons why - turn around and wave good-bye

She can’t believe just how quickly it’s gone by…it’s Mother’s Day

At times it’s as though everything’s the same

She can close her eyes and see it all again

There’s a little girl hiding in her face

Who still questions all the mystery’s of this place

Though time has been of justice, and age has made her wise

She seldom notices or stops to recognize…it’s Mother’s Day
