An inning later, an RBI three-bagger from first baseman Chris Hess scored third baseman Welfrin Mateo to extend the lead. 18-year-old starter Roansy Contreras threw five scoreless innings before he surrendered Hagerstown’s tying runs in the sixth The RiverDogs regained the lead in the seventh on a Dermis Garcia single to plate Oswaldo Cabrera. Charleston was staved off by Frankie Bartow in the final half inning. Shortstop Oswaldo Cabrera ripped a single to right field, but the potential tying run in Carlos Vidal was cut down at the plate by the right fielder Canning. Doggie Bites: Back and Forth: Charleston surrendered two slim leads against Hagerstown in Saturdays defeat, evening the current series, 1-1, and falling to 2-4 against the Washington Nationals affiliate this season. The Suns took three of four from Charleston in their other meeting this season from May 12-15 at Municipal Stadium. The Suns have been in the cellar of the Northern Division for most of the season and sit 13 1/2 games out, snapping a four-game skid on Saturday. In an offensive season series, the two teams have combined for 84 runs in 47 innings. Speed Thrills: For the second time this season, Charleston collected a trio of three-baggers on Saturday, with the first being against Asheville on June 11. Mitchell Hansen and David Metzgar clubbed back-to-back three baggers in the third inning, also the second time Charleston has accomplished that feat (June 1 vs. Delmarva). Additionally, the Dogs stole three bags for the third time this season. Like He Never Left: Infielder David Metzgar collected a hit and an RBI on Saturday, lengthening his hitting streak to 10 games going back to May 5 before he was reassigned to Extended Spring Training. Since his return to Charlestons lineup on Tuesday, the undrafted signee is 7-for-19 and is hitting .310 in 26 games with the RiverDogs this season. Welfrin Keeps Beltin: Third baseman Welfrin Mateo bounced back from a 0-for-4 Friday night with three hits in Saturdays game two. Mateo has six multi-hit games in his last 13 contests dating back to July 26. The D.R. native has hit safely in 10 of those 13 games at a .370 rate (17-for-46), raising his season average from .189 to .248. One-Two Punch: Over the last six games, RiverDogs hitters batting first or second in the lineup have combined to hit .375 (18-for-48). David Metzgar has been the leadoff catalyst for the last five games batting .369, and Carlos Vidal is 3-for- 8 in the two-hole against Hagerstown. Start Me Up: Charleston starters have excelled in the last nine games going back to last weekend’s series in Delmarva, collectively allowing 15 runs (13 earned) in 52 innings, good for a 2.25 ERA. 18-year-old Roansy Contreras pitched five scoreless frames before the Suns scored their first two runs in the sixth, chasing Contreras after 5 2/3. No Free Passes: RiverDogs pitchers have allowed the third-fewest walks in the league with 281 and are averaging 2.4 free passes per nine innings, less than a seven percent walk rate overall. Charleston’s pitchers are on pace for 140 fewer strikeouts than their franchise-record last season (1,252) but will walk 38 fewer hitters at their current rate. Let Slumping Dogs Lie: The RiverDogs fell to 2-3 in current homestand on Saturday and have dropped 22 of their last 31 games, including two losing streaks of six or more games. Following a league-best 12-4 start to the second-half, the Holy City is batting .235 (232-989) with a 4.17 ERA (122 ER, 263.0 IP) while being outscored 133-95 (-38) in 31 games.
