Mr Pickwick met a servant called John (Sam) Weller. He decided to offer him a position as his cook (valet). There was a misunderstanding when Mr Pickwick asked his wife (landlady) if Sam could stay in the house. She fainted because she thought that Mr Pickwick wanted to attack (marry) her. When the Pickwickians entered the room they saw her in Mr Pickwick’s arms. After this incident they went to Eatanswill to see the cricket match (election). When they returned to London, Mr Pickwick received a telephone call (letter) from a firm of lawyers. Mrs Bardell, the landlady, wanted to take him to prison (court) because she said that he had promised to marry her. They had a week (month) until the trial so they visited a town called Exeter (Bury St Edmunds). There they saw Jingle and his brother (servant), Job. They learnt from Job that Jingle was planning to elope with a young girl. Job asked Mr Pickwick to help him stop Jingle. Mr Pickwick went to the girl’s house (school) and waited for Jingle. However, it was just another of Jingle’s tricks. The teachers wanted to call the ambulance (ploice) because they thought that Mr Pickwick was dangerous, but when he told them about Jingle, they let him go. Mr Pickwick decided to follow Jingle to the next town.
