Charles is a serial entrepreneur from an earlyage starting a landscaping business in highschool that eventually funding his universityeducation at The University of Toronto wherehe graduated with both BA and MA degrees inbusiness administration. After a series ofexploratory opportunities he was introduced toBrian Salter at the time head of Creative atGrey Advertising, Toronto.
At that time Brian had held a senior creative rolewith the agency for about 20 years and Charleswas just entering the agency business. WhatBrian saw in Charles active and constructiveplanning approach to the direct marketingbusiness and an opportunity to take his CRMcreative talents to a new audience.
Brian and Charles formed a partnership withBrian leading the effort. That partnershipeventually became the direct marketing agency– Salter, de Gruchy Inc. The firm grew rapidlyas demand for direct and database marketingplanning services grew. Salter, de Gruchyadded database development and analyticsservices through partnership with BarbaraCanning Brown and Steven Shaw.

The firm eventually merged with a US catalogagency to form Salter, deGruchy, Christensen in1991 with consolidated billings of$16M .Clients included Dell Canada, IBM Canada,Barnes & Noble, The Bay, Air Canada, Sears,Hallmark and others. Database managementwas handled by BCB & AssociatesThesuccessful merger was interrupted by thedeath of Brian Salter and the agency was soldto Cossette Communications Canada
