The Beginnings

• The Charles City Wesleyan

Methodist Church has it origins

from the efforts of several

Wesleyan Methodist families from

the City

• Mid-week and prayer services were

held for a period of time

• The Group was organized as a

congregation on July 17, 1913 by

Rev. Emerson

The Beginnings..

• Congregation had 14 Charter

members

• Met in family homes and the home

of Rev. Emerson and even in the

old Court House until the Gilbert

Street Church was built in 1921

• As the group grew Rev. Emerson

appointed Rev. George Smith who

was the pastor of Howardville

Wesleyan Church (founded 1859) .

So technically Charles City was

planted or at least nourished by

sister country church.

• My grandparents Adolph & Martha

Daake and parents Rueben and

Bernice Daake were members at

one time of the German Methodist

Church at Flood Creek

• When Adolph & Martha Daake

moved Charles City, Rueben and

Bernice Daake were members at the

Mission Covenant Church until they

eventually joined the Wesleyan

Methodist church. Served the church

for over 50 years.

1950’s the three Daake rascals

were born into the world.

• All three of us boys attended

– Miltonvale Wesleyan College

– Dick went on to be a professor at OKWU

– Bob a computer programmer in Des Moines

– I have been a professor now at Olivet for 18

years
