What is TwitterTwitter Explained

Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that allows you answer the question, “What are you doing?” by sending short text messages 140 characters in length,

called “tweets”, to your friends, or “followers.”

The short format of a tweet is the unique characteristic of Twitter. This allows informal and quick information sharing that provides relief from rising email

and instant message fatigue. You can use Twitter to share information with people that you wouldn’t normally exchange email(s) or instant message(s) with.

This opens up your circle of contacts to an ever-growing community of like-minded people.

You can send your messages using the Twitter website directly, as a single SMS alert, or via a third-party application such as Twirl, Snitter, or the Twitterfox add-on for Firefox. (you will learn more about these tools in our Accelerate on Twitter Guide)

Your tweets are displayed on your profile page, on the home page of each of your followers, and in the Twitter public timeline (unless you disable this in your account settings.)

Why Twitter is Useful

Twitter has many uses for both personal and business use. It’s a great way to keep in touch with your friends and quickly broadcast information about where you are and what you’re

up to. For example, “I’m downtown and aching for some sushi. Anyone like to join me?”

For business, Twitter can be used to broadcast your company’s latest news and blog posts, interact with your customers,

or to enable easy internal collaboration and group communication, allowing you to drive traffic to your website.

Filling in the Create Account FormTip 1: Selecting your username A. You can have up to 15 alphanumeric characters in your username as long as there are no spaces. B. First name, last name, business name or pick a name that is in your niche. For

example, If you are in real estate pick “realestate_sue”. Another example would be “seo_steve”, “trucker_bob”, or “healthy_betty”. (More on names on page 16) People can quickly see what you’re about and they know your name too. (Option-al-Use the underscore key if you wish to give the username more distinction).

C. As you type in the characters for your desired username, Twitter automatically checks if the username is available. If someone is already using that username Twitter notifies you like this:

We’re going to SKIP this step for now

The reason you’re skipping this step is because your account is not ready yet.If you send out those invites to your contacts right now, this is what they’re goingto see when they come to your Twitter page:

Did you really want your friends to see how ugly your page is right now?Not many people will want to follow a brown square like this.

Page 12: Charity Marketing Solutions LLC 2009 - EagerLearner.com · 2009-02-18 · Charity Marketing Solutions LLC 2009© Welcome and thank you for allowing us the opportunity to serve you

The only people that would follow you are your loved ones and… they will only do itbecause they have to or more likely because you threatened them with grievousbodily harm if they didn’t! ☺All right, let’s “fix up” your account – make it look pretty – and tell Twitter howyou want to use it. One more thing before I forget…

Congratulations, you are now officially an active user on Twitter! Your“homepage” on Twitter is now http://twitter.com/username (where usernameis the one you chose earlier on.)

Setting Up Your AccountYou will be taken to the following screen when you skip the “Invite Friends” step:

Under: What are you doing?enter something you would like to say, like “Hello everyone I am new to Twitter”Then press the update button

Let’s go through the fields and fill them in. Name : This is the name that will appear in your Twitter bio. This is not the same as

the “username”, unless you want it to be.

Username : First name, last name, business name or pick a name that is in your niche. For example, If you are in real estate pick “realestate_sue”. Another example would be “seo_steve”, “trucker_bob”, or “healthy_betty”. People can quickly see what you’re about and they know your name too. (Optional-Use the underscore key if you wish to give the username more distinction). Usernames on Twitter are becoming hot commodities like dot com websites. Get your personal or business name(s) before they’re gone.

Email : Many Twitter applications only work with Gmail accounts. Getting a separate Gmail account for your Twitter account is recommended. (We will share the power of this later on)

Time Zone : enter the TimeZone you are located in or wish to be in.

More Info URL : If you have a website, blog, facebook or other website you would like people to see, insert your link here. Be sure you include “http://” before you domain name or your link will be unclickable.

One Line Bio : The keywords you select for your one line bio will be searchable by others and can give you immediate visibility and exposure on twitter. Check out our one line bios

Al Ferretti http://www.twitter.com/AlFerretti or Jim Grygar http://www.twitter.com/TrafficGen or Skeeter Hansen http://www.SkeeterHansen You may use up to 160 characters in your bio. ( I would enter as many characters as it allows without sounding “spammy”.)

Location : Simply enter the City and State where you are located. When you enter in your location, other people who are in your same City or even in your same State may start to follow you...

Language : Press 1 for english, lol.

enabling Your Mobile Phone For Twittering

This step is only necessary if you want to receive or send Twitter updates from your mobile phone.

WORD OF CAUTION: Depending on your service provider and the mobile plan you have, you could end up paying for every Twitter message received or sent. One person we know of found out the “hard way” when he received a bill of $150.00 for text messaging!

First lets define updates. Updates are the actual micro blogs aka “tweets” posted with 140 characters or less under home or everyone. Protecting will only let people whom you approve follow your updates. Protecting does not allow for public view-ing nor will your updates be indexed by the search engines, like google. People will not be able to follow you without your approval and will be unable to search you on Twitter. Most people on Twitter do NOT protect their updates, but it’s your choice.

Be tricky! Your password should be at least 6 characters and not a dictionary word or common name. Change your password on occasion. Note: If you have trusted a third-party Twitter service or software with your password and you change it here, you’ll need to reauthenticate to make that software work. (Never enter your pass-word in a third-party service or software that looks suspicious.)

Protect my updates:

Setting Your Notification Preferences

Notifications are “self-explanatory”. Simply enable the types of messages you wantto receive in your email inbox when the following events occur:

What are the @reply settings?example: you follow Skeeter and Al. Skeeter follows you, Al and Jim. You love reading and replying to Al and Skeeter’s updates but you don’t know Jim, so you don’t want to see Skeeters’s replies to him. You don’t want to stop following Skeeter, nor do you want to follow Jim. What to do? Twitter offers @reply timeline settings to control the display of replies between people you follow on your homep-age. These settings are like filters for the replies posted by your followers. There are three settings

• @replies to the people I’m following: see @replies posted by people you follow to other people that you also follow. In this case, you would always see replies between Skeeter and Al because you follow both of them, but never between Skeeter and Jim, because you don’t follow Jim. (This is the default setting.)

• All @replies: see all @replies posted by people you follow, whether or not you follow the person to whom the reply is directed. In this case, you would see all of Skeeters’s replies to Jim and anyone else she replied to, regardless of whether you follow them or not.

• No @replies: never see any @replies in your timeline, ever. In this case, you would not see a reply from anyone, regardless of follow state, including replies between Skeeter and Al, Jim, or anyone else.

Note: these settings don’t affect your replies tab; all replies made to you appear in your own replies tab regard-less of follow state, even if your settings are “no @replies.” The replies setting is like a timeline filter for replies made by people you follow, it’s not for managing replies made to you. To change your @reply settings: 1.Log in to Twitter 2.In the upper right hand navigation bar, click Settings www.twitter.com/account/settings 3.Click the fourth settings tab, Notices www.twitter.com/account/notifications 4.Select the appropriate setting: all or nothing, or somewhere in between. 5.Save your changes Use your reply settings to show a comfortable number of replies for you.

People often wonder...

1. If I @reply to someone who doesn’t follow me, will they see my reply in the replies tab?

Yes. A person’s replies tab shows all replies made to them regardless of timeline set-tings or follow state. The only exception to this is block-- replies from people you’ve blocked will not show up in the tab.

2. Can I receive notifications on my device when someone sends me an @reply?

Yes. If you have Twitter turned ON, and notifications are ON for the person you’re following, you will receive their @reply on your device. There is no setting for receiving replies only.

3. What is the difference between an @reply and a Direct Message?

Direct messages can only be exchanged between mutual followers; they are private and only the author and recipient see them. @replies are public messages sent between people, regardless of follow state. Direct Messages are sent with this formula: D+username+message. (example: D Jim_Grygar are you going to that movie?)

Don’t Start Tweeting yet. (You need to finish setting up your profile page)

Upload Your Profile Picture

Your Twitter profile picture instantly indentifies you to the Twitter world.

Tips:

* A real picture of yourself is encouraged. This will add character to your tweets. * Because the images are usually seen in a small version, a crop of your face works best. * People can see the full-sized version when they click on your picture from your profile page. So

don’t upload a tiny one -- Twitter will create the thumbnail for you. * If you want to control exactly how it will be cropped, upload a square picture. * Nudity or obscene images are not allowed. * Be sure you have permission to use the photo you’re using.

(And don’t use a celebrity’s picture -- unless you’re that celebrity, of course.)

Inviting Friends To Follow YouRemember that step you skipped earlier on when we were setting up your account?Well, now you’re ready for it… Click on the “Find People” link in the navigation bar. You’ll be presented with three tabs or options to finding people

Twitter supports integration with the following networks:Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, MSN and Gmail. Here’s a quick overview of what happenswhen you use this option: • You’re prompted to enter your account details for the network • Twitter logs into your account (e.g your Gmail) and retrieves your email contact list from that account. • Twitter then searches it’s database for their email addresses and creates a list of your contacts who are already on Twitter. All you have to do is: click on who you’d like to follow and click on the “Continue” button – Twitter takes care of adding them to your “following” list for you. • In the next step Twitter lists all your contacts who are NOT on Twitter and asks if you would like to send them an email invitation to join and start following you. As in the previous step, you can pick the ones you would

like to send an email to.

Inviting people from other networks you belong to

This is a sample of the email that your friends will receive:

From: [Your Name] [email protected]: [Your Name] wants to keep up with you on TwitterMessage:To find out more about Twitter, visit the link below:<link to your Twitter homepage>Thanks,-The Twitter TeamAbout TwitterTwitter is a unique approach to communication and networking basedon the simple concept of status. What are you doing? What are yourfriends doing—right now? With Twitter, you may answer this questionover SMS or the Web and the responses are shared between contacts. This message was sent by a Twitter user who entered your emailaddress. If you’d prefer not to receive emails when other peopleinvite you to Twitter, click here:<link to your Twitter homepage>

In this step you enter a list of email addresses of people you know and want to follow on Twitter. The process is similar to the previous step, except you have to manually enter the email addresses.

Tip: Personally we don’t recommend using this option. In our opinion it’s probably better to send your friends an email from your own computer, using your own email account. You’ll probably achieve much better results with this because your friends will recognize your normal email address in their email inbox. Also, email service providers might incorrectly flag Twitter’s email as SPAM. Using your own email increases your chance having your invitation delivered and read.
