Who We Are
Coming together as a community this holiday season
Welcome to our quarterly newsletter!
Baystate Foundation is a nonprofit innovator founded in 1999 and was designed
to bring assistance to the many children’s charities within our communities.
Our goal is to raise money and awareness in order to make a positive impact in
the day to day lives of children in need.
With great success comes great responsibility.
What’s Inside
Winter 2017 | Newsletter BAYSTATE FINANCIAL CHARITABLE FOUNDATION
Dear Friends,
Thank you for making 2016 yet another remarkable year for the Baystate Financial Charitable Foundation!
This year marked 17 years of service for the organization. Our dedicated volunteer based staff has done an
incredible job at expanding our outreach and fundraising.
Our ongoing goal is to keep our overhead low while increasing donations and awareness in order to make a
positive impact in the day to day lives of children in need., and you truly make this possible! BFCF is stronger
than ever due to our continually expanding community who comes together to donate time, resources, and
talent in support of our important mission. This year alone we worked with over 40+ New England based charities
by funding programs that strengthen the family unit and parent-child relationships and promote youth
development.
Our Board of Directors has helped us dramatically increase our donor base and we will be adding 5 new powerful
local business leaders to the BFCF Board of Directors in January that will undoubtable assist us in expanding our
primary mission of contributing to the many charitable programs that support the needs of children and families
in communities in which we do business.
While we are proud to help so many plan for a better financial future, we are also proud to take our talent and
knowledge into less fortunate communities. Thank you for being a part of the Baystate Foundation movement.
Without your support, none of this work would be possible! So, as we pause this holiday season to recognize the
goodness in our lives, we offer special thanks to each and every one of you who contributed time, knowledge,
resources and funding. And to ALL who make our work possible – we offer wishes for a Merry Christmas and
healthy holiday season!
With great success comes great responsibility.
Sincerely,
Chris McIntosh

INTERVIEW: 7 questions with a Baystate Financial Charitable Foundation Board Member
JOHN BUTTERWORTH
EVP / PARTNER, CBRE
1) What makes our mission meaningful to you?
• I think with any charitable organization there are two very important factors, the first is the leadership. In my opinion, Dave Porter lives by the words, “To whom much is given, much will be required”. It is easy to follow someone like Dave that truly wants to help others by giving back not only his resources but his time. The second is the mission of the charitable organization, primarily to give back to the children in need in our community.
2) What are some of your prior board leadership experiences?
• I am a former Board member of Rosie’s Place in Boston. Rosie’s is a special place. I am on the Board of The Travis Roy Foundation. Travis Roy is my hero. He is the most inspirational person I have ever been in contact with. His attitude is contagious and what he does for others is truly remarkable.
3) What skills, connections, resources, and expertise do you have to offer and are willing to use on the behalf of the Baystate
Foundation?
• I think as a Board Member you should always be willing to assist in any way possible, or more importantly, in any way needed. We are a team, we all have certain individual strengths. My strength is I believe in the Leadership of the Foundation and the mission. Put me on the field and give me a job to do.
4) What is your favorite BFCF event, and why?
• I love the golf outing. I enjoy the camaraderie and I feel like I am not only a part of the Foundation but a member of the Baystate Financial community. With that said, I would like to thank all of the people at Baystate for making me feel that way.
5) Do you have personal aspirations that could be enhanced by serving on the BFCF board?
• I mentioned Travis Roy earlier. I love who he is, what he does and how he does it. At some point, I would like to have Travis and his Foundation honored at the golf outing and a portion of the funds raised channeled to his Foundation.
6) What motivates you?
• This is a great question. I am very lucky and I know it, I have a wonderful wife and three great kids. I would say
that I am motivated to provide the best life I can for them.
7) What are your expectations from the management of the nonprofits where you’ve served as a board member?
• To set clear goals and direction. To show us and the community how we are improving the lives of others with
our mission.
Board Member Spotlight
In 2015, 80.3 percent of all U.S. charitable gifts were made by individuals: 8.3
percent were made as bequests at death ($27.73 billion) and 72 percent were
made as gifts during life ($240.6 billion). Charitable gifts during life increased by
4.2 percent over 2014 (or 2.7 percent adjusted for inflation) and bequests at
death increased by 8.7 percent over 2014 (or 7.2 percent adjusted for inflation).
In addition, individuals gave approximately $272 million in contributions for
disaster relief.
For many individuals, the decision on how to give is straightforward – just write a
check to the charitable organization each year. But for other donors, in addition
to the immense satisfaction that comes from giving, deciding how to structure
their charitable gifts to maximize the economic and tax advantages they and their
families receive is also very important. As a simple indicator, 83 percent of all
charitable gifts made by individuals in 2015 were made by those who itemized
their deductions for federal income tax purposes.
In fact, we believe that the more financial advice donors receive, the more likely
they are to give to charity during their life and at their death. At the same time,
charitable organizations are looking for new and creative ways to increase the
monetary donations they receive from committed donors as well as ways to
increase the hours of personal service those donors provide. It is only through
continued gifts of time and money that your organization will be able to continue
its important mission.
“Through the generosity of
our associates, we are able
to help thousands of
children by donating to so
many special charities,”
added Dave Porter,
Managing Partner of
Baystate Financial.
“Our participation in
fundraising events and
volunteering showcases part
of our mission statement
which is all about reaching
out and providing a hand to
at-risk children. We are so
thankful to be able to give
back to the communities.”
Charitable Giving is Personal
Baystate Financials Client-Centric Approach
When it comes to something as important as planning for a family’s financial future, potential donors will want to work with a
professional who has the backing of a financially sound company and who has the integrity and experience to work as part of a
team that includes their tax and legal advisors.
Our financial services professionals will listen to client concerns and provide the clear and concise information needed to allow
clients to make informed planning decisions. Baystate’s approach focuses on understanding not only the client’s goals, but the
reasons for those goals, and how they fit into a larger financial picture.
Our financial services professionals work with clients, their legal and tax advisors, and your organization to determine successful
planned giving strategies for every client situation.
We help translate intentions into action.
We are pleased to announce that the Baystate Financial Charitable Foundation had the opportunity to fund 40 differ-ent non-profits throughout 2016. Our goal is to continue raising money and investing that money in deserving non-profits that are generating outcomes that are truly making a difference in the lives of children. As we approach 2017, our plan is to remain an active participant in a wide variety of non-profits that are changing lives.
Every year, BFCF relies on fundraising through events such as the “Annual Charity Golf Classic.” On June 14, 2016 the Baystate Foundation honored the Travis Mills Foundation with a day of golf. The tournament, played at the Interna-tional Golf Club in Bolton MA, raised $275,000, which included donations from individuals, corporations, businesses, and the community. We will be hosting this year’s golf classic on June 13, 2017, and it will again be played at The In-ternational. We are looking forward to this event exceeding the bar – which is already set so high.
