Charging system troubleshooting can be sim­ple or confusing depending on your familiarity with the system, and your understanding of what the tests are supposed to do. At first glance, the Service Manual tests may seem more complicated than they're worth. How­ever, after you've been up against some tough jobs, you'll appreciate how these tests help you in pinpointing trouble and in checking the complete system. Regardless of first impres­sions, the charging system tests will quickly become routine, and you'll realize something that's true of many things that seem compli­cated .. . explaining how takes more time than actually doing the job .

The Service Manua l tests actually help to simplify troubleshooting because they divide the charging system into four main sections. This separation not only helps you isolate trouble in specific parts of the system, but also 1nakes it easier to understand the function of each section in the operation of the complete system.

Of course, you may be able to spot trouble faster by checking visually. You only have to take the cover off the voltage regulator to find stuck contacts or a blown fuse wire. But, when you find something like this, it's a toss-up whether the condition is the result of trouble elsewhere in the system, or the cause itself. So, to save troubleshooting time, and to guard against comebacks, m ake sure you touch all the bases by testing instead of guessing.
