2013Optic Neuritis

Opc Neuris (ON) has been observed in about 40% of MS paents during the course of their disease and

may be the first presenng event in about 20% of paents with MS. It is characterized by loss of vision in

the affected eye and pain on movement of the eye. Much less commonly, paents with ON may describetransient flashes of light and black squares (phosphenes) lasng from hours to months.

Onset of ON typically occurs over minutes or hours, rarely days; however, loss of vision (visual acuity)

progresses over days to weeks and may range from minimal to profound. Complete loss of vision is very

rare in opc neuris and hence other potenal causes should be considered in such paents.
