Throughout the book, Benjamin the donkey has been “morose and taciturn.” He speaks very little, and when he does, it is often to make an intelligent but negative observation. He felt that life never changes. He may have said something like, “You work hard, get too little to eat, and then you die.” At the end, as he reads the last change to the Seven Commandments, “All animals are equal but some are more equal than others,” he might have said something like, “What goes around comes around.” What would he mean by this? Can you think of parallels to this idea in today’s world?
