Chapter 17.1
Weather and Climate
• Weather is constantly changing and refers to the state of the atmosphere at any given 9me – Today is rainy, cloudy, humid
• Climate is based on observa9ons of weather over long periods of 9me – Nebraska has a temperate climate; warm summers, cool winters
Air
• Air is a mixture of gases and par9cles – 70% Nitrogen – 21% Oxygen
Water Vapor
• Source for all clouds and precipita9on – Absorbs some of the solar energy from the sun
Ozone
• Form of oxygen that combines three oxygen atoms into each molecules – NOT the oxygen we breathe – Concentrated in stratosphere – Cri9cal to life on earth because it filters most UV radia9on from earth
– If there was no ozone, life on Earth would not be possible
Height and Atmospheric Structure
• The atmosphere thins as you travel away from Earth un9l there are too few gas molecules to detect – As you go higher into the atmosphere, the pressure decreases
Earth Mo9ons
• Rota9on is the spinning of Earth about it’s axis – Causes our daily cycle of night and day
• Revolu9on is the movement of Earth around the sun – Every 365 days, gives us seasons – Seasons are caused by Earth’s posi9on rela9ve to the sun con9nually changing as it revolves
The Seasons
• Summer sols9ce: June 21-‐22 • Winter sols9ce: December 21-‐22 • Spring Equinox: March 21-‐22 • Fall Equinox: September 21-‐22
