Notes Quickly becoming rare on newer bicycles. Principally found on older or “city” bikes.
Notes Most popular system. 1.5" is newest size. Cannondale was first to use this, but made a running change to a “final” standard with a deeper head tube bore (25.4 mm versus 11 mm ream depth). On Cannon-dales, carefully match stem to steerer diameter, as there may be some nonstandard diameters.
Notes Idea being promoted by Columbus. It combines the simplicity of external cups with a low-profile look. A larger diameter head tube is required than with a traditional threadless headset.

CHAPTER 12
HEADSETS
CHAPTER 12
THREADEDDerived from the original 1" diameter head tube
national standards now typically standardized
as follows:
1" JIS standard. JIS (Japanese Industrial Stan-
dard) is common on lower-priced bikes from
Japan, Taiwan, and China.
1" Professional (Campagnolo) standard: pre-
dominates among aftermarket headsets and
higher-end bikes and framesets. JIS dimen-
sioned bikes can be milled to Professional
standard. The opposite is not true.
11⁄8" from the original Tioga design; also used
on some tandems and mopeds.
1¼" from the original Gary Fisher design.
THREADLESS Standard/AheadSet type1" JIS standard.
1" Professional dimensional standard, more
common for aftermarket headsets. JIS dimen-
sioned forks and frames can be reamed to Pro-
fessional standard.
11⁄8" to Tioga standard.
1¼" to Gary Fisher standard.
1.5" (One.point.five): a cooperative standard
from Cane Creek, Manitou and others. Cannon-
dale may have been the first company to use
a 1½" head tube. Cannondale initially used
a ream depth of 11 mm, but then changed to
25.4 mm, the same as the cooperative standard.
Cane Creek makes a special headset to convert
Headshox equipped Cannondales to forks with
a 1 1⁄8" steerer. Cannondale has also used some
nonstandard stem/steerer sizes.
THREADLESS LOW-PROFILE Intellaset/Slimstak1" and 11⁄8" Uses conventional external cups,
flush to the sides of the head tube. Most com-
mon in Europe. Headset adjustment and stem
attachment follow the same procedures as for
any standard threadless headset. It can be con-
sidered a subset or derivative of the standard
threadless design.
THREADLESS INTEGRATEDBearing cartridges are installed into an enlarged
and specially machined head tube without cups,
achieving the lowest stack height of any design.
This design requires especially good ream con-
centricity and depth control. Headset adjustment
and stem attachment follow the same procedures
as for a standard threadless headset.
1" and 11⁄8" Cane Creek standard (mostly 1 1⁄8").
1" and 11⁄8" Campagnolo Hiddenset standard.
1" and 11⁄8" other standard(s), very rare.
THREADLESS SEMI-INTEGRATEDSometimes confused with Integrated; has cups
semi-recessed (and pressed) into and onto the
head tube to achieve a low stack height. Head
tube diameter is large to accommodate the re-
cessed cups. Headset adjustment and stem at-
tachment follow the same procedures as with
any standard threadless headset.
1" and 11⁄8" Cane Creek Zero Stack standard
(95% of market share, mostly in the 1 1⁄8" size).
1" and 11⁄8" to various other standards, very rare.
THREADED SEMI-INTEGRATED 1" and 11⁄8" New, fairly rare, and mainly on Eu-
ropean city bikes. Combines the large diameter
head tube of the semi-integrated type (similar
dimensions) with a threaded steerer tube for
greater stem height adjustability. This type of
headset may be found on some Giant bicycles.
UNUSUAL COMBINATIONSSome bicycles combine a 1¼" lower stack with
a 1 1⁄8" upper stack (e.g., Trek 5900); other bicy-
cles combine a 1" O.D. fork with a 1 1⁄8" headset,
using special parts so as to deplete old stock;
some RockShox 1" forks have JIS dimensioned
crown race seats; one titanium Litespeed model
was designed for an integrated headset using
sleeves inserted into the head tube, and there
are yet other unusual combinations. Mostly,
these exceptions and hybrids follow the general
guidelines–though with a twist. Being aware
of the normal standards should help you cope
more easily.
BMX EXCEPTIONSBMX bicycles typically follow the above stan-
dards, though for the 1" size and mainly on
older bicycles, there is also an increasingly less
common original standard using a 1" diam-
eter steerer tube with 32.7 mm OD cups pressed
into a 32.5 mm ID head tube. Crown race seat OD
is 26.5 mm and crown race ID is 26.4 mm, like
those of the 1" Professional.

HEADSETS
Generally, components are dimensioned with
“one-sided” tolerances. All of the tolerance range
is in one direction (either larger or smaller)
away from a “target” or “preferred” dimension.
The target dimensions generally achieve the
Headset Fit Headset Fit (continued)
minimum desirable press fit, with allowances in
the direction of tighter fits. The value given in
bold type is generally the target.
All dimensions are in millimeters unless other-
wise indicated.
Notes■ Dimensions are
guidelines only. Some situations (e.g. very thick walled steel head tube) may require reduced interference.
■ Bold values are target values with tolerance ranges falling in the direc-tion of increased interference.
Notes■ See detailed illus-
trations under each headset type, on the following pages, with many more fit dimensions.
■ Integrated head-sets have no cups; cartridge bearings are mounted directly to head tube.
Note■ Information
based on data collected from various fork and headset manufacturers.
For information on bicycles made before 1996, and on older national or brand standards, refer to Sutherland’s 6th Edition, page 14-2.

Loose balls are generic, avoiding ordering problems. Ball retainers usually have fewer balls, and lower load capacity. Ball retainers may sometimes be nec-essary if assembly difficulties prevent loose balls from being correctly positioned.

Notes■ Early Cannondales
using 1.5" headset may have a ream depth of 11 mm. Cane Creek makes some models to fit. It may not be a good idea to ream out the head tube to 25.4 (minimum) depth to fit standard 1.5" headsets, as Cannondale has used some head tubes with an “hourglass” shape that does not allow for adequate wall thickness with deep reams.
■ Cane Creek also makes a model to adapt 1.5" to work with 11⁄8" forks.
Notes■ JIS 1" standard
headset can be replaced by Profes-sional 1" after milling the head tube and crown race seat.
■ Numbers in bold are target dimensions.
■ See page 12-6 for comments on tolerance and target dimensions.

Tip
Loose balls are generic, avoid-ing ordering problems. Ball retainers usu-ally have fewer balls, and lower load capacity. Ball retainers may sometimes be necessary if assembly dif-ficulties prevent loose balls from being correctly positioned.
Notes
■ Numerous AheadSet branded headsets are sold OEM only.
■ Bearing balls in retainers are shown in Notes column as R0 – ‰" with 0 = number of balls and ‰" = ball size (example: R20 – 5⁄32"). If number of balls is un-known, comments show ‰" balls in retainer.
