What Will We Learn Today?

Adaptations and its Types

2 Different Types of Adaptations in Animals based on Climatic

Conditions of their Habitats

CONTENT

Climate and Adaptation

Climate has profound effect on animals.

Animals are adapted to survive in the conditions in which they live.

Animals living in very cold and hot climate possess special features to protect

themselves against the extreme cold or hot.

Features and habitats that help animals to adapt to their surroundings are a

result of evolution.

Climate and Adaptation

The tropical and the polar regions are two regions of earth having severe

climatic conditions.

Polar regions are situated in North and South pole of the earth.

Countries like Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, etc. are in polar region.

Region of earth lying near to Equator having hot climate is tropical rainforest.

Countries like Brazil, Africa, India, Malaysia, Indonesia have tropic climate.

CONTENT

Polar Region

Polar regions present an extremely cold climate.

These regions are covered with snow and is cold for most of the year.

The sun does not set for six months and does not rise for another six months.

In winters the temperature in polar region can drop to -37oC.

Animals living in such cold climate have adaptations to survive in Polar region.

Adaptation of Animals in Polar Region

Fish can remain in cold water for long.

Only the top surface of water freezes because of outside weather.

Underneath the frozen upper layer, the water remains in liquid form (between

0oC- 4oC).

Thus oxygen is trapped beneath the layer of ice. As a result, fish can

comfortably live in the cold water.

CONTENT

Adaptation of Animals in Polar Region

Migratory birds migrate to warmer regions when winter sets in polar region.

They return when the winter is over and the temperature is suitable for survival.

Siberian Crane comes from Siberia to Bharatpur Wildlife sanctuary in Rajasthan

and Sultanpur in Haryana.

Migration helps them to overcome scarcity of food, provide favourable

conditions for breeding and raising their young ones.

Siberian Crane

CONTENT

Adaptation of Animals in Polar Region

Migratory birds travel as far as 15000 km to escape extreme climatic conditions.

They fly high where the wind flow is helpful.

They have built-in sense of direction and know in which direction to travel.

Some birds may use landmarks to guide them.

TROPICAL RAINFORESTS

CONTENT

Tropical Rainforests

Tropical region has hot climate due to its location near equator.

The temperature is generally higher than about 15֯C.

During hot summers the temperature may cross 40oC.

Days and nights are almost equal throughout the year.

These regions get plenty of rainfall.

CONTENT

Tropical Rainforests

Tropical rainforests are found in western

ghats and Assam in India.

Due to continuous rainfall and warmth

this region supports wide variety of flora

and fauna.

Major types of animals living here are

monkeys, elephants, lizards, frogs, etc.

There is immense competition among

these animals for food and shelter. Western ghats

CONTENT

Adaptation of Animals in Tropical Rainforests

Monkeys have long prehensile tail that helps them in grasping or holding the

objects. It also helps in maintaining the body balance.

Their hands and feet are such that they can easily hold on to branches.

CONTENT

Adaptation of Animals in Tropical Rainforests

Owing to stiff competition for food, some

animals have adaptations to reach to food that

aren’t easily reachable.

The bird Toucan possesses a large, long beak

to reach fruits on branches which are

otherwise too weak to support its weight.

CONTENT

Adaptation of Animals in Tropical Rainforests

Many tropical animals have sensitive hearing and sharp eyesight

Thick skin and a special skin color helps them to camouflage by blending with

the surroundings.

This protects them from predators.

Eg. - Tiger and lion have sensitive hearing; Chameleons changes its skin colour

according to the surrounding.

Camouflage in Animals ( Adaptation in Tropical Region)

CONTENT

Adaptation of Animals in Tropical Rainforests

The Lion-tailed macaque (Beard Ape) is only found

in the rainforests of western ghats.

The silver-white mane surround the head from the

cheeks down to its chin.

The trunk, tusks, large ears are all adaptations to survive in hot climate.

B. False

Summary

Adaptations in

Polar Region

Extreme cold climate

Sun rise only for six months.

The temperature becomes freezing during winters.

Polar bear, Penguins, Migratory birds, fishes can survive.

White fur, double layer of skin, fat insulation are common adaptations.

Some have strong sense of smell and are good swimmers.

Adaptations in

Tropical

Rainforest

Extreme hot and humid climate

Temperature remains warm throughout the year.

This region receives plenty of rainfall.

Animals are adapted to survive in hot climate.

They also compete for food and shelter.

Some adaptations include living on trees, strong tales, long and large beaks, sharp eyesight, loud voice, sensitive hearing, thick skin for camouflage.

ACTIVITY

Which of the following are adaptations for polar regions and tropical rainforest?

1. Diets heavy on fruits 6 White fur

2 Need to migrate 7 Loud voice

3 Sticky pads on feet 8 Layer of fat under skin

4 Wide and large paws 9 Bright colors

5 Strong tails 10 Long and Large beak
