On October 12th the Emerging Professionals Committee hosted a tour of the newly opened WaterFire Arts Center. The project by DBVW Architects with General Contractors TRAC Builders made for an enjoyable evening of networking and continuing education (1 HSW CEU included). Attendees learned about the renovation from Architect Douglas Brown, AIA, TRAC VP Nelson Ferreira, and Barnaby Evans before and during a tour of the facility. A networking social hour ensued following the tour.

Note: Corporate Affiliates are listed on the Chapter web site.

The WaterFire Arts Center is a celebration and continuation of community art started by Barnaby Evans in 1994, and is housed in the former US Rubber Company facility located at 475 Valley Street in Providence. The space is home to WaterFire Providence’s executive offices, a gift shop, and rental space for exhibitions, performances and other events.

The Emerging Professional’s Committee is always looking for progress and/or newly completed projects by members to showcase and tour. If you have a project you would like to show to members, please let the Chapter’s Executive Director or Emerging Professionals Direction know!

AIA Rhode Island relocated its Providence chapter office this year. With generous support from Roger Williams University, AIA Rhode Island moved with RWU when they left 158 Washington Street for One Empire Street.

The new office is an internal space, adjacent to the entry lobby. This new space provides a location for the Chapter to have small meetings and display member work in the windows to the main lobby, or on a digital message board. AIAri has the opportunity to reserve larger meeting rooms within the RWU campus.

If you would like to reserve the AIAri Headquarters meeting space, please speak with the Executive Director.

AIA Rhode Island New Office

As the end of 2017 approaches, the Chapter also approaches the end of an era of its own.

AIA Rhode Island’s beloved Executive Director, Jennifer Zolkos will be leaving to dedicate more of her time to her family and to pursue new career endeavors.

Since 2007, a decade, Jen has been AIA Rhode Island’s steady guide. She is the person the Board of Directors and Executive Committee turned to, and individual members all turned to with myriad questions, requests and concerns:• Did the Chapter finish all the accreditation

paperwork?• Did we get our CEUs?• How do we contact the registration board?• Do we have everything we need to get this event off the

ground? • Did we get everyone registered and signed up?• Do we have enough allied members?• Can we get these email announcements and invitations

distributed?• Can we get the web site updated?

Over the years, Jen has been the one constant keeping the Chapter together.

The sentiment of the Board and the membership may be best expressed by 2017 Chapter President, Jen Space, Assoc. AIA, “We cannot thank Jen enough for the service she has given us. We will miss her dearly, but we wish her well as she opens the door on a new chapter of her own.”

Morse Stone Fellows - 2017 Inaugural Class

In September 2017, the Board created the new Morse Stone Fellowship, named after the Chapter’s first two Presidents Alpheus C. Morse, FAIA, and Alfred E. Stone, FAIA.

The Board felt the contribution of these two architects to the profession and the chapter was of invaluable service during its formative years, and should be celebrated today, in the spirit of fellowship that the AIA was founded to foster.

Similarly the Board felt past officers, especially chapter presidents should be encouraged to continue to promote fellowship and mentorship within the chapter, even after their terms in office conclude. The Board has decided to confer fellowship on all past Chapter Presidents. Furthermore, starting this year, the Board begins a practice of conferring fellowship for Presidents upon completion of their term, and other deserving members.

While a fellowship such as this is new to the Chapter, AIA National has two similar fellowships: the Richard Upjohn (first national AIA President), and the Louise Bethune (first American woman known to have worked as a professional architect). The intent of this fellowship is to model it after it’s national predecessors.

Alpheus C. Morse, FAIA (1818-1893) was a founding member, and the first president of AIA Rhode Island in 1875, serving until 1884.

GreenRI promotes companies that produce earth-friendly building materials. This year the event expanded into 3 greenhouses showcasing 59 vendors that represent product interests of the interior design, architecture and landscape architecture community.

Three CEU programs were also held: • “Trace it Back: A Course in

Transparency” presented by 3Form,

• “Living Green Walls” presented by Green Plants for Green Buildings, and

• “Incentives, Assistance and training: demystifying Services to Support your Energy Efficient and High-Performance Site, Buildings and Interiors” presented by Kathleen Arthur of National Grid.

Since 2012, GreenRI has annually been presented by the International Interior Design Association New England Chapter (IIDANE). AIA Rhode Island has co-sponsored the event a total of three times, with 2017 being the 2nd consecutive year. The 2017 event was also co-sponsored by the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

Planning for the event starts in the Summer of the previous year while representatives of the three organizations (AIA, ASLA and IIDANE) cumulatively work towards the event in the Spring. In addition to finding vendors and CEU programs, the planning committee works together to gather sponsorships and organize a sample collection drop-off for Resources Recycling for RI Education – a non-profit company that helps gather materials for educators to promote creative learning.

All members should anticipate a coming announcement for the 2018 GreenRI date. Members interested in participating on the planning committee should inform a Board member or the Executive Director.

The chapter encouraged our AIA members and Corporate Affiliates to enjoy a night of networking and fun, with a brief chapter presentation. The “Welcome Message” from 2017 Chapter President, Jen Space, Assoc. AIA, was brief, as the event was primarily social. Attendees had an opportunity to “cue” into AIAri’s plans for the year, learn about event/committee participation opportunities, and meet the 2017 Board of Directors.

The Second Annual Billiard’s Night is currently planned for February 2018. Members are cordially invited. An announcement with a specific date will be sent soon.

7aia-ri.org6 Chapter Bulletin ~ December 2017

The Board is pleased to welcome Caroline Stevens as AIA Rhode Island’s new Executive Director to oversee the operations, financial health and implementation of the Chapter’s programs.

Caroline is passionate about building community and dialogue around the design of our cities, and brings a breadth of experience to her new role. Over the past decade, her work has evolved from leading architectural tours and writing a Chicago-based building blog, to creating innovative place-based public programs in cities across the US. Prior

Caroline Stevens

to moving to Providence, she helped launch and later managed the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s “Open House Chicago,” now one of the largest architecture and urban exploration festivals in the world.

In Providence, she’s best known for her work directing Doors Open RI, a new initiative she founded that organizes local place-based public programs. Through her leadership, Doors Open RI has made its mark on Providence with such events as a funeral for the Fogarty Building and Doors Open RI Festival. Caroline is a recipient of an Embark Fellowship from Brown University, from where she recently graduated with an MA in Public Humanities.

“I’m thrilled by the opportunity to build upon AIA Rhode Island’s legacy of enhancing the quality of our built environment,” Caroline said. “Rhode Island is exceptional for its architectural heritage and unparalleled creativity. Through building partnerships and supporting architectural education, Rhode Island can become a national leader in the design field. It’s this potential that especially excites me as I take on this new role.”

FameIn future issues, a section will be dedicated to member news which can be submitted via a form on the Chapter Web site. This will be your opportunity to share with fellow Chapter members.

News items will be categorized as follows:• People and Firms• New Work• Corporate Affiliate News

Founded in 1875, AIA Rhode Island is a statewide component of the American Institute of Architects, and is the seventh oldest AIA chapter. It is a professional association representing over 200 professionals and 50 affiliate members. Members adhere to a code of ethics and professional conduct that assures the client, the public, and colleagues of an AIA-member architect’s dedication to the highest standards in professional practice. Corporate Affiliate and Allied members include engineers, contractors, owners/clients, public officials, other allied professionals, students, and others interested in design and the built environment.

Doors Open RIvery good or excellent and 94% reported learning something new about a place or piece of Providence history. “Our goal was to give the keys of the city to the people,” said Stevens. “We managed to do just that with the help of many volunteers and amazing partners. We’re thrilled that together we all made a little magic for our residents and tourists visiting Providence.”

The Festival is the signature event of the new Doors Open RI initiative, which organizes place-based public programs throughout the year. Recent events include a funeral for the brutalist Fogarty Building, open house for Sons of Jacob Synagogue and murder mystery at Barnaby’s Castle. The next such Festival in Rhode Island is planned for the fall of 2019, making it a biannual celebration of Rhode Island’s architectural and cultural legacy.

The Festival is part of a movement of free, citywide “Doors Open” and “Open House” events that take place annually in over 50 cities around the world. The Doors Open RI Festival is the first such event in Rhode Island.
