chapter 9 life functions common to living...
TRANSCRIPT
Life Functions
• Living Organisms must carry these out to survive. – Transportation = movement – Nutrition = food – Growth and repair = healing, growing – Reproduction = Making new cells or babies – Regulation = responding to changes – Metabolism = Breathing, digestion eliminating
waste – Synthesis = When your cells make new
substances
Dormancy, Hibernation, and Torpor
• Dormancy - Only happens in plants, they take the winter off
• Hibernation - animals slow their heart rate and breathing down to avoid winter
• Torpor - When animals become inactive in the hottest driest weather
Photosynthesis • Only in plants • Happens in the chloroplast • Takes in Carbon Dioxide, sunlight and
water, and produces Oxygen and glucose
• Requires sunlight
Cellular Respiration
• Happens in both plants and animals • In plants occurs at night • Takes in Oxygen and Food and
produces energy, Carbon dioxide and water.
O2 + glucose ENERGY + CO2 + H2O
Urinary System
• Kidneys filter your blood that has cellular waste in it, and transports it to the bladder.
Digestive System Parts
• Esophagus - Pushes food to stomach • Stomach - Food is mixed, Enzymes dissolve
food to liquid form • Small Intestine - Neutralizes stomach acid,
This absorbs most of the food • Large Intestine - Absorbs Vitamins, Minerals
and Water • Anus - Discharges Undigested food in the
form of feces.
Circulatory System parts
• Heart - pumps blood throughout the body • 3 Different Blood vessels • 1. Arteries - Carries oxygen rich blood from
the heart to rest of the body (Red) • 2. Veins - Carries oxygen low blood from the
body to the heart (Blue) • 3. Capillaries - Very tiny tubes that connect
veins and arteries (1 cell thick walls)
Digestive System and Circulatory System working
together • The Digestive system breaks down food into
small enough pieces to be carried by the blood
• The circulatory system transports the food around your body
• Nutrients are fed to your cells • Waste passes out of your cells and into your
blood • Your blood helps dispose of the waste that
would be harmful to your body
Monitoring Life Functions
• Doctors Need to know if your healthy • They have designed machines to help
diagnose you
X-rays and CAT scans
• These both take pictures of the inside of your body
• X-Rays are for bones • CAT scans are for brains
Endoscope
• A camera on the end of a long flexible tube that allows you to see inside your esophagus.
Blood Pressure
• Sphygmomanometer (Blood Pressure Cuff) • Measures your pressure • Systolic and Diastolic readings • When your heart pumps it’s the systolic
reading (The number is higher) • When your heart relaxes it’s the diastolic
reading (The number is low) • Its Reported in the form of 120 over 80
