ADSL is an asymmetric communication technology designed for residential users; it is not suitable

for businesses.

NoteNote::

Page 4: Chapter 9 High-Speed Digital Access: DSL, Cable Modem, and SONET

The existing local loops can handle bandwidths up to 1.1 MHz.

NoteNote::

Page 5: Chapter 9 High-Speed Digital Access: DSL, Cable Modem, and SONET

ADSL is an adaptive technology. The system uses a data rate based on the

condition of the local loop line.

SDSL:-Symmetric DSL provides equal speed in both the directions whether upstream or downstream.HDSL:-IT is full duplex and uses two twisted pair cables and provides almost the double the speed of ADSLVDSL:-It uses generally fiber optic cable for data transmission for long distances.it provides 25-55Mbps upstream and 3Mbps downstream.

Figure 9.7 Coaxial cable bands

Each channel in the video band requires 6MHz of bandwidth so it can have upto 80 channels.

Page 17: Chapter 9 High-Speed Digital Access: DSL, Cable Modem, and SONET

Downstream data are modulated using the 64-QAM modulation technique.

NoteNote::

Page 18: Chapter 9 High-Speed Digital Access: DSL, Cable Modem, and SONET

The theoretical downstream data rate is 30 Mbps. .

NoteNote::

Page 19: Chapter 9 High-Speed Digital Access: DSL, Cable Modem, and SONET

Upstream data are modulated using the QPSK modulation technique.

NoteNote::

Page 20: Chapter 9 High-Speed Digital Access: DSL, Cable Modem, and SONET

The theoretical upstream data rate is 12 Mbps.
